Gold prices flitted within a narrow range on Wednesday as investors awaited key U.S. inflation data for insights into the potential scale of a Federal Reserve rate cut next month. Spot gold was steady at $2,635.56 per ounce, as of 0222 GMT, moving largely within a slim $9 range during the session. Gold is traditionally considered a safe-haven investment during periods of economic and geopolitical uncertainty, including trade wars and other conflicts. Investors digested a handful of economic data on Tuesday indicating the economy remained on solid footing. Elsewhere, China's net gold imports via Hong Kong in October fell from September and were down 43% from the previous year, data showed.

In 2023, the US was South Korea’s second-largest export market after China, with $116 billion of goods traded. But Trump’s planned tariffs on Chinese goods could also benefit some countries in Southeast Asia as factories may relocate from China to other places in the region. Shoe seller Steve Madden announced earlier this month that it will halve its Chinese production to avoid Trump’s tariffs, and it will be sourcing from Cambodia, Vietnam, Mexico and Brazil, among other countries. In 2023, the US was the number one recipient of exports from China, Vietnam, Thailand, India and Japan. In the first nine months of 2024, the United States’ largest trade deficit was with China.

SEOUL, South Korea — A South Korean man hoping to avoid mandatory military service has been convicted after trying to eat his way out of it. He was sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for two years, under the Military Service Act, which allows for sentences of up to three years for evading mandatory military service without justifiable cause. The sentences were “relatively lenient” because neither of the men had previous criminal convictions, the court official said. “Most of all,” the official said, the man “accepted his wrongdoing and vowed to serve his military duty sincerely.”The official could not confirm whether the man had started his military service. Hong Kong’s top court ruled on Tuesday to uphold inheritance and public housing benefits for same-sex married couples, a decision that supporters hailed as an important step toward expanding gay rights in the territory. Hong Kong does not recognize same-sex marriage, but the rulings brought an end to two protracted legal battles involving couples who married overseas. Nick Infinger, who married his husband in Canada, sued Hong Kong’s Housing Authority in 2018 after their joint application for public housing was denied. Mr. Ng died in 2020, and lower courts subsequently ruled in his favor. His husband, Henry Li, contested the Hong Kong government’s efforts to appeal those rulings.

Hong Kong CNN —Hong Kong has become a center for money laundering and sanctions evasion under the tightening grip of Beijing, US lawmakers have warned, calling for a re-evaluation of America’s close business relationship with the Asian financial hub. “We must now question whether longstanding US policy towards Hong Kong, particularly towards its financial and banking sector, is appropriate,” they added. Rubio, a fierce critic of Beijing’s crackdown on Hong Kong, has sponsored legislation that sanctioned Chinese and Hong Kong officials for alleged human rights violations in the city. This has massive implications for US businesses with big exposure to Hong Kong,” Fish said. “Sadly, the idea of Hong Kong as autonomous from China is now a farce … US companies need to understand that their Hong Kong operations will likely fall under increased scrutiny.”

The new Mate 70 smartphone, which starts at 5,499 yuan ($760), features the HarmonyOS Next operating system, which no longer supports Android-based apps. The Mate 70 represents a “critical step” in Huawei’s software evolution, Lucas Zhong, research analyst at Canalys, told CNN. The shift away from the Android ecosystem “will be essential for Huawei to maintain momentum in the premium segment, solidify consumer loyalty, and attract potential platform switchers,” he said. Major Chinese tech companies have reportedly gotten on board, hiring developers to create compatible apps. “If no one uses it, no matter how advanced the operating system is, it will have no value,” he said, according to a Wechat post.
