A small band of Ukrainian soldiers was trapped. They were holding the line on the battlefield, but Russian forces had managed to creep in behind their trench and encircle them. Viacheslav, the 30-year-old commander of an elite drone unit, said last week as he monitored events from an outpost a few miles away in eastern Ukraine. “Any vehicle attempting to reach these positions will be ambushed.”“We are always getting stuck in these kinds of tough situations,” he said. As the war in Ukraine enters its fourth winter and the first snowfall blankets cratered fields strewed with bodies, the situations are only growing tougher for Ukrainian forces.

New York prosecutors told the judge who presided over Donald Trump's hush money trial on Tuesday that his sentencing should be postponed while the president-elect's lawyers file further legal arguments asking the case be dismissed. The proposal Tuesday from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office would need to be signed off on by Judge Juan Merchan to become official. A ruling against Trump on the issue would have paved the way for the judge to proceed with his sentencing, which was tentatively scheduled for Nov. 26. That case has been paused while Trump and some of his co-defendants seek to have an appeals court remove Willis from the case for an alleged conflict of interest. Trump's lawyers have contended that even if she’s allowed to remain on the case, any Trump trial would have to wait until he’s out of office in 2029 because of constitutional issues.

CNN —Donald Trump’s lawyers and the Manhattan district attorney’s office have agreed to delay activity in the hush money case until November 19 to give the president-elect’s lawyers time to make new arguments on how his election victory impacts the case. Judge Juan Merchan was expected to rule Tuesday on whether to overturn the business fraud conviction based on this summer’s Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity. “The stay, and dismissal, are necessary to avoid unconstitutional impediments to President Trump’s ability to govern,” Bove wrote. The Supreme Court’s immunity decision also indefinitely tied up Trump’s federal election subversion case in Washington, DC. The jury should not have heard any testimony from Hope Hicks about events in 2018 when she was the White House Communications Director, Trump’s lawyers argued.

ATLANTA — The election could be decided in Georgia’s fastest-growing and most ethnically diverse county. Vice President Kamala Harris’ economic pitch has heavily emphasized small-business owners, and those in Gwinnett County — one of the “Decider” counties NBC News is tracking — acknowledge they could use more support. So far, many like what Harris is offering, though some remain undecided just over a week before Election Day. The county is exceptionally diverse, with no single ethnic group comprising more than a third of residents, according to 2020 census data. She also kicked off an “Economic Opportunity Tour” in Atlanta this summer, highlighting the administration’s economic accomplishments for Black communities.

I work one or two 12-hour shifts at the hospital a week, depending on the needs of my unit. I'm also an educator within my hospital, so I spend several days a week teaching patients in an outpatient setting. I go to work before my kids wake up and come home as they're crawling into bed. I feel guilty that my job completely removes me from my kids' lives for full days at a time. The long hours are worth it because my work is important to meI overcome mom guilt by being fully present when I'm with my kids.

CNN —The Chicago Bears kicked off Week 6’s Sunday action by moving to 4-2 as they defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 35-16 in London, England. The matchup was officially listed as a Bears home game, and it certainly had the atmosphere of one. Ian Walton/APWilliams and the Chicago offense struggled mightily to start the game, only mustering seven yards of offense in the first quarter. A series of defensive penalties helped Chicago move the chains with the drive culminating in another Williams TD pass to Allen to start the fourth quarter. The Jags scored again via another Lawrence to Davis touchdown pass but were unable to make any further inroads into the Bears lead.

To lower costs, 1 in 3 homeowners are willing to hire a contractor with holes in their resume. About 33% of surveyed homeowners say they'd consider hiring a contractor with a questionable reputation to save money, according to a new report by Clever Real Estate, a housing data site. Generally, homeowners say reputation is the most important factor when hiring a contractor (25%), followed by experience (23%), cost (19%), personal recommendations (13%), availability (11%) and estimated project timeline (10%). As homeowners juggle insurance claims and recovery efforts from back-to-back storm aftermaths, one thing to keep in mind is who to hire as a contractor. Jordan Vonderhaar for BIIn late July, after Biden dropped out of the race, I traveled to Starr County to see why this longtime Democratic stronghold has been shifting steadily to the right. Like the mesquite and huisache that thrive in this arid climate, he has deep roots in Starr County. The Rancho Cafe — part Old West saloon, part Tex-Mex hangout — embodies the dual identity of local Latinos. Before she built what would become a billion-dollar company, Angie Hicks had to conquer one of her biggest fears: talking to strangers. Hicks — one of the two co-founders of Angi, formerly known as Angie's List — is a self-described introvert. But when the business launched in 1995, she wore many hats — often literally walking door-to-door to recruit Angi's first customers. In 1996, the company rebranded to Angie's List after customers began associating Hicks personally with the recommendations. The company, which went public in 2011, has consistently brought in over one billion dollars every year since 2018.

Republicans stand a good chance of erasing the Democrats’ narrow 51-49 Senate majority in November, a hard reality that complicates Harris' transition planning. Members of Harris’ transition team have studied that one — the handoff from Ronald Reagan to George H.W. Last month, Harris' campaign appointed Yohannes Abraham to run the team that is preparing for a transfer of power. Two days before his sentencing, Trump, they predict, will seek something never before allowed in the appellate courts in New York or in most states for that matter: an interlocutory appeal. "If New York's courts deny him a right to appeal, he can challenge the decision in federal court," said Paradis. Burned-out cars littered the road next to craters from artillery strikes in this city, Toretsk, in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, that is now on the front line of the war with Russia. CNN —Manhattan prosecutors said there is no basis to overturn Donald Trump’s conviction in the hush money case after the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity. Any error, they argued in a filing Thursday, is “harmless” when viewed against “overwhelming evidence” of the former president’s guilt. Prosecutors with the Manhattan district attorney’s office said the conviction should stand. They also noted that Trump’s attorneys didn’t raise objections during the trial to most of the evidence they now question, arguing they can’t now challenge it after the trial. According to Hicks, Trump said it would have been bad for Stormy Daniels’ allegations to have come out before the election.

Read previewManhattan prosecutors are fighting to keep Donald Trump's September 18 hush-money sentencing on track, saying in a new filing Thursday that it was "harmless error" if evidence he's now immune from entered the case. But Trump would have been indicted and convicted even if evidence the defense calls "official" were removed, the filing adds. AdvertisementThe filing argues that Trump is wrong in now stamping much of the prosecutor's case "official act evidence." But these tweets describe unofficial acts unrelated to Trump's official duties, and for which he has no immunity, the prosecution filing now argues. Lawyers for Trump did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the prosecution filing.
