It may be a coincidence that the celebrity look-alike competition returned to prominence just as American citizens were voting in what some called “the most significant presidential election in our lifetimes.” But once it happened, the appeal was obvious. Here was a different kind of democratic event: a totally insignificant one, in which attractive men with slightly off-kilter features were lined up in public and ranked by the roaring crowd. At the first contest, which convened a flock of Timothée Chalamet doubles in Manhattan last month, the New York Police Department showed up, deemed it an “unscheduled demonstration” and arrested four people. They are typically publicized with posters on lampposts, staged in public parks and accompanied by meager prizes. The Mescal double won 20 euro “or three pints”; the White winner received $50 and a pack of Marlboro Reds.

With massive corporations including Alphabet , Meta , Apple , Microsoft and Amazon set to report earnings next week, CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday urged investors to keep a level head. Tuesday brings McDonald's earnings report, and Cramer said to expect "a full airing of the e-coli situation," but that it is too early to tell how much damage it will do to the fast food chain. I spoke to voters and a mayor in Northampton, one of two bellwether counties in Pennsylvania. The mayor told me that politics are local — and the election will likely come down to grocery bills. Both Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump were in Pennsylvania on the same Monday, courting voters at a rally and town hall respectively. There was 46-year-old Michelle Kerns, who said she doesn't think Harris gets enough credit for easing inflation. I heard many iterations of "I'm not following the election" or "I'm sick of talking about it" on Monday afternoon.

Elliott Investment Management has requested a special meeting at Southwest Airlines , formalizing the launch of a long-signaled proxy fight for control of the carrier's board. Elliott has also trimmed the size of its board slate from 10 director candidates to eight, after Southwest shrunk its board size from 15 to 12. CNBC reported last month that Elliott was preparing to call a special meeting. David Hess, who joined Southwest's board in 2021, was also on the board of Arconic in the midst of its proxy fight with Elliott. Elliott has never before called for a special meeting, which at Southwest carries a higher threshold of approval compared with voting at a regularly scheduled shareholder meeting.

A 27-year-old Nebraska man who posed as someone a decade younger and attended high school for more than 50 days was sentenced to at least 85 years in prison in connection with sex crimes charges, court documents show. Scheich identified himself as “Zak Hess,” 17, and attended two high schools in Lincoln — Northwest High School and Southeast High School — for 54 days in the 2022-23 school year, officials previously said. A spokesperson for the district where Scheich attended high school also did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday. Charging documents show the crimes he pleaded guilty to mostly occurred in 2022 and 2023. In September, authorities accused a 23-year-old woman of criminal impersonation after she allegedly posed as Scheich’s mother and helped him get enrolled in the schools, according to KOLN.

Read previewWarning: spoilers ahead for "House of the Dragon" season two. "House of the Dragon" season two has turned Daemon Targaryen, one of the show's most beloved characters, into a joke. At the end of the first season, the complex and charming Daemon (Matt Smith) emerged as one of the show's most popular characters. Related storiesBut in the chapters adapted for season two, Daemon only goes to Harrenhal and unites the Riverlands. But if the show's writers let themselves be constricted by the book's narrative, they risk "House of the Dragon" going stale — just like Daemon's story arc.

The Triumphant Comeback of the Kamala Harris Meme
  + stars: | 2024-07-23 | by ( Amanda Hess | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Kamala Harris is a highly memeable presidential candidate. Videos of Harris dancing at campaign events were labeled “cringe.” The stickiest anti-Kamala meme of the 2020 election — that the former prosecutor Harris “is a cop” — united leftists, Black Twitter and Republican trolls in an internet-wide project of framing Harris as either a reactionary or a hypocrite. Since President Biden bowed out of the race and threw his support to Harris, the familiar old Kamala memes have risen again. Her dance moves have been set to Charli XCX songs and filtered through Charli’s lime-green “Brat”-era branding, bathing Harris in her chill hot-mess pop star glow. Even “Kamala Harris is a cop” has been reclaimed, with an exaggerated wink, by supporters eager to fashion it into a winning general-election pitch.

Further, a company that offers a high dividend yield may be more likely to cut the payment when times get tough. Other names on Wells Fargo's high dividend yield list include Medtronic , Lockheed Martin and Cisco Systems .
