The lawsuit is the latest sign of the long-simmering tensions between Ben & Jerry’s and consumer products maker Unilever. In its new lawsuit, Ben & Jerry’s says that Unilever has breached the terms of the 2022 settlement, which has remained confidential. As part of the agreement, however, Unilever is required to “respect and acknowledge the Ben & Jerry’s independent board’s primary responsibility over Ben & Jerry’s social mission,” according to the lawsuit. Ben & Jerry’s has positioned itself as socially conscious since Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield founded the company in a renovated gas station in 1978. Unilever sells its business in Russia

Unilever, owner of brands including Dove soap and Hellmann’s mayonnaise, said Thursday that it has completed the sale of its Russian business to Arnest Group, a local manufacturer of perfume, cosmetics and household products, for an undisclosed amount. The British consumer goods company said the sale includes all of its business and four factories in Russia as well as its business in Belarus. “Over the past year, we have been carefully preparing the Unilever Russia business for a potential sale. The Kremlin demands a discount of at least 50% on exit deals involving firms from what it calls “unfriendly” countries — those that have imposed sanctions against Russia. The exodus of firms from Russia has cost foreign companies more than $107 billion in writedowns and lost revenues, according to a Reuters analysis in March.

OpenAI adds former NSA chief to its board

OpenAI on Thursday announced its newest board member: Paul M. Nakasone, a retired U.S. Army general and former director of the National Security Agency. Nakasone was the longest-serving leader of the U.S. Cyber Command and chief of the Central Security Service. The company said Sarah Friar, previously CEO of Nextdoor and finance chief at Square, is joining as chief financial officer. OpenAI also hired Kevin Weil, an ex-president at Planet Labs, as its new chief product officer. Weil was previously a senior vice president at Twitter and a vice president at Facebook and Instagram.

OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever said Tuesday that he's leaving the Microsoft -backed startup. The departure comes months after OpenAI went through a leadership crisis involving co-founder and CEO Sam Altman. In November, OpenAI's board said in a statement that Altman had not been "consistently candid in his communications with the board." OpenAI has announced new board members, including former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers. Over the past decade, many corporations have at least professed to take a more active role in social issues, under pressure from their customers and, more importantly, employees. After last year's Bud Light debacle, which was a real blow to its business, executives fear they'll be the next target of some anti-woke outcry. Unilever launches $1.6 billion buyback as CEO demands improvements

Unilever launched a 1.5 billion euro ($1.6 billion) share buyback on Thursday after volumes increased for the first time in 10 quarters, although its CEO said its performance needs to improve. Unilever's shares rose as much as 4% on Thursday, hitting their highest point since it last reported earnings in October. Unilever said it expects "modest improvement" in underlying operating margin for the full year and underlying sales growth within its multi-year 3% to 5% range. The company reported a roughly 5% rise in fourth-quarter underlying sales, meeting analysts' average forecast, a company-provided consensus showed. Underlying fourth quarter price growth was 2.8% and underlying volumes were up 1.8%, rising for the first time since the second quarter of 2021.

Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that CVC was in the early stages of considering a possible bid for Nexi, Europe's largest payments company by volume of transactions. Nexi shares have lost 22% this year, adding to a 47% drop in 2022 and stoking speculation about potential takeover interest. By 0730 shares in Nexi were indicated up 16.7% at 6.72 euros a share, not far from a record low of 5.25 euros a share hit earlier this month. The presence of shareholder funds which will eventually need to liquidate their investment and the depressed share price have fuelled persistent speculation about Nexi's future. New York CNN —Johnson & Johnson is replacing its instantly recognizable logo that’s been in use for 135 years. Although it’s a big change, shoppers likely won’t notice it since the cursive logo will still be used on its consumer products, like Band-Aid and Tylenol. Johnson & Johnson recently split into two companies — one focused on medical devices and medications and the other on consumer health products, which operates under a brand called Kenvue. The name Kenvue reflects J&J’s desire for the new consumer company identity to take a backseat to well-known brands. Still, ditching the signature J&J logo marks an end of era since the company once stated that its “one of the longest-used company emblems in the world.” The new logo will roll out over time on J&J’s medical equipment and pharmaceutical products.

Less than half of Nestlé’s main food-and-drink portfolio is considered healthy, according to the results of an international nutrient profiling system that the Swiss food company published for the first time. Nestlé started using it last year with the aim of boosting transparency about the nutritional value of its products. “Our focus is on improving the nutritional value of our products,” Nestlé said. The rankings from the Access to Nutrition Initiative rate companies on their practices and disclosure, including on ensuring healthy products and influencing consumer choices.
