When Glinda and Elphaba, the leads of the new movie adaptation of “Wicked,” clap eyes on each other, it’s loathe at first sight. Glinda, short for Galinda, played by Ariana Grande, is pale and pretty in pink. Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, is glowering in glasses and green skin. “No, I am not seasick; yes, I have always been green; and no, I did not eat grass as a child,” she says. And right then, you know where you are: Act One of a classic frenemy love story.

I’m not a huge fan of musicals, nor of action movies. I’m a cultural omnivore, personally and professionally, so I knew I would eventually see these movies. But I would be seeing them as a sociologist, a curious outsider rather than the ideal audience member. I wasn’t going to be mouthing every word to “Defying Gravity” or comparing Lucius’s performance in the arena to that of his father. It’s the reward for a life discerningly lived — you know who you are.

The two ensembles that Ariana Grande wore on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" weren't her best. Ariana Grande appears on the June 6 episode of "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon." Though Grande's outfit was classic, especially paired with sheer tights and white Jimmy Choo heels, the garment was altered drastically from its runway state, which made it less unique. The musician later changed into a black, asymmetrical Mugler outfit, which was more interesting in shape and style. Unfortunately, the lace cat mask she wore across her face made the outfit look too much like a costume.

To examine the issue of human smuggling, De León spent seven years closely studying the lives of men dedicated to smuggling migrants from Central America and Mexico into the U.S. The result was his nonfiction book, “Soldiers and Kings: Survival and Hope in the World of Human Smuggling," which on Wednesday garnered De León the prestigious National Book Award for nonfiction. While De León interviewed countless migrants and smugglers, his book focuses on the journeys of nearly half a dozen people from Honduras, Mexico and elsewhere. That’s talking about smugglers, talking about the political economy of undocumented migration — and people don’t want that. Despite his years of experience, De León said he learned new lessons while working on the award-winning book.

With its flying monkeys and magical shoes, oh my, the story of the Wizard of Oz has been lodged in the popular imagination for over a century. It is, after all, an archetypal American myth: an epic of good and evil, the comfort (and dreariness) of home, the draw (and freedom) of the road, the perils of power and the yearning for transformation. The 1939 film with Judy Garland, in particular, is so embedded in the American cinematic DNA that it’s inspired everyone from Martin Scorsese to David Lynch, Spike Lee and John Waters, who once called (accurately!) the wicked witch “every bad little boy’s and girl’s dream of notoriety and style.”I wonder what Waters will make of “Wicked” and its green-hued, deeply sincere heroine, Elphaba, a ready-made meme machine played by Cynthia Erivo in what becomes a showstopper of a performance. Both the character and the actress are the strongest draws in this splashy, largely diverting, tonally discordant and unconscionably long movie, which is the first installment in a two-part adaptation of the Broadway show “Wicked.” That juggernaut opened at the Gershwin Theater in 2003 and shows no signs of (ever) closing; it will presumably still be raking it in when “Wicked Part Two” is set to open in November 2025.

After Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s dramatic performance with Latino voters, a coalition of Democratic-leaning Latino groups is grappling with the shift and trying to reconcile it with the policies they say many Hispanics support.
