A Google VP said the updates are "a pretty dramatic shift from where we were before." Advertisement"From a user perspective, this is a pretty dramatic shift from where we were before," said Rhiannon Bell, vice president of user experience for Google Search, in a roundtable with reporters. Of course, it leads to questions about how Google Search rankings — an ever-changing, ever-elusive algorithm — will work with these new formats. Using Google Lens to searchGoogle is upgrading Lens, a feature that uses the phone camera to search for information about what it sees. "Today, 20% of all Google Lens searches are actually shopping-related, which is pretty interesting," said Lens product director Lou Wang.

CNN —A day after OpenAI impressed with a startlingly improved ChatGPT AI model, Google showed off its vision for how AI will improve the products that billions of people use every day. Google showed how it wants its AI products to become a bigger part of users’ lives by sharing information, interacting with others, finding objects around the house, making schedules, shopping and using an Android device. Simply put, Google wants its AI to be part of everything you do. Google CEO Sundar Pichai showed off various new features powered by its latest AI model Gemini 1.5 Pro. One new feature, called Ask Photos, allows users to search photos for deeper insights, such as asking when your daughter learned to swim or recall what your license plate number is, by looking through saved pictures.

She listened to her players and what they wanted from the league, including a higher salary cap, but knew she couldn't meet all of their needs. One partner, Deloitte, overhauled the WNBA's app, for example. The current rights deal for the WNBA, which is coming off its largest regular-season viewership in more than two decades, runs through 2025. The mid-season Commissioner's Cup is sponsored by league partner Coinbase. The streaming app WNBA League Pass also brought in viewership, as did deals with Meta and YouTube.

Hashtag searches for dupes of major brands - including Skims underwear and Deckers' (DECK.N) Ugg boots - have been viewed millions of times on TikTok. Graphic shows pictures of four original products and their original prices under named brands compared with the prices of their 'dupe' counterparts. Newer technologies like the Google Lens app allow people to take photos of items they like and find similar products for sale. In other cases, dupe sellers opt to replicate the look of higher-priced originals with cheaper materials to maximize profit. However, experts say dupe sellers have grown increasingly skilled at avoiding brand logos and other design features that could infringe existing patents or copyrights.

It's similar to how Google Lens directs users to suggestions based on items captured by their camera. The tool is trained on data from PriceRunner, a price comparison service Klarna acquired for close to $1 billion. PriceRunner competes with the likes of Amazon , Google's shopping comparison service Google Shopping, and French-founded firm Kelkoo. Klarna users will be able to point their phone at an item of clothing or gadget and find recommendations on similar products directly within the Klarna app. Still, regulators, not least the European Union, have become wary about the rapid advancement of generative AI technology, which generates new material in response to human inputs.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 25 (Reuters) - OpenAI's ChatGPT is getting a major update that will enable the viral chatbot to have voice conversations with users and interact using images, moving it closer to popular artificial intelligence (AI) assistants like Apple's (AAPL.O) Siri. The voice feature "opens doors to many creative and accessibility-focused applications", OpenAI said in a blog post on Monday. ChatGPT's new voice feature can also narrate bedtime stories, settle debates at the dinner table, and speak out loud text input from users. Alphabet's Google Lens is currently the popular choice to gain information on images. The new ChatGPT features will be released for subscribers of its Plus and Enterprise plans over the next two weeks.

Users can now take or upload a photo to Bing Chat and ask for more information on it through the desktop or Bing apps. "Bing can understand the context of an image, interpret it, and answer questions about it," Microsoft wrote in a release. The update comes as the AI arms race heats up among chatbot leaders like Microsoft, Google , OpenAI and Anthropic. In the effort to develop the most advanced generative AI, tech giants are quickly launching new features, aiming to keep up with not only their text-based chatbot competitors, but also image-heavy AI tools. Microsoft's decision to allow images for Bing Chat follows Google's recent debut of an image search feature for Bard, its AI chatbot.

OpenAI and other AI startups will struggle to match this reach, unless they team up with other tech giants, like Microsoft. After Google I/O this week, it's looking like AI will be another 80/20 situation where a few Big Tech companies benefit the most. Some examples:In Google Docs, ask Google's AI model to help you write a job description. For a Google Slides presentation with photos, you can ask the company's AI model to create speaker notes based on the images. Insider ran into a high-level Google product manager at the conference who'd just watched a developer presentation.
According to internal documents about Google I/O viewed by CNBC, the company will unveil PaLM 2, its most recent and advanced LLM. It's also performed a broad range of coding and math tests as well as creative writing tests and analysis. The updates come as competition ramps up in the AI arm's race, with Google and Microsoft racing to incorporate chat AI technology into their products. Outside of the AI sphere, Google will show off its new foldable phone, The Pixel Fold, as CNBC previously reported. Google plans to market the Pixel Fold as water-resistant and pocket-sized.
Fake images of Donald Trump's arrest and Pope Francis in a coat recently fooled the internet. AI experts shared four tips to identify deepfakes including reverse image search and fact-checking. The more subtle ones like Pope Francis can "slowly just chip away at our trust in visual media and make it harder to navigate the truth." Try a reverse image searchIf all else fails, Ajder suggested using a reverse image search tool to find the context of an image. Ajder recommended Google Lens or Yandex's visual search function for reverse image search capabilities.
Maarten Bosma, an ex-Google Brain engineer, said in a tweet that Alphabet isn't taking AI seriously. Bosma's tweet comes after Google demoed its latest AI tools in Paris, including ChatGPT rival Bard. Some critics called Google's demo "frankly, bad" and a "disaster" amid a growing AI arms race. "I think the Google presentation signaled (rightfully or wrongly) that they are not really taking it seriously," Bosma tweeted. Microsoft' demo "was presented as a revolution," while Google's demo was presented as a "disaster," Marcus wrote.

During the event Wednesday, which was livestreamed from Paris, Google executives discussed some of Bard's capabilities. Shares of Alphabet slid during the event, suggesting that investors were hoping for more in light of growing competition from Microsoft. Google's event took place just one day after Microsoft hosted its own AI event at its headquarters in Redmond, Washington. Microsoft's event centered around new AI-powered updates to the company's Bing search engine and Edge browser. Though Microsoft's latest AI investments increase the pressure on Google search, some analysts say it will take time for Microsoft to see any significant gains.
Google veteran Clay Bavor is leaving the company to build a startup focused on artificial intelligence with former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor. Before that, Bavors started and led Google's augmented reality and virtual reality efforts and also ran Project Starline and Google Lens. Bavor said he'll be starting the company with Taylor in March and wrapping things up at Google in the meantime. Taylor stepped down as co-CEO of Salesforce on Jan. 31, leaving Marc Benioff alone again at the top of the cloud software company. Taylor, who previously worked at Google and Facebook, joined Salesforce through the 2016 acquisition of his last startup, Quip.
While Microsoft's new AI capabilities could take some market share from Alphabet, Google is still the unshakable leader in search. Alphabet also showed AI-enabled capabilities to Google Maps and Google Lens, allowing users to search for images from their phone's camera. Looking at Alphabet's total revenue of $76.05 billion during the fourth quarter , about 57% came from Google Search & Other. But data from Statcounter shows Google accounts for 93% of search engine market share in all platforms including desktop, tablet and mobile, overshadowing Bing's 3% market share. But Google search, the preferred platform for users, still has the edge with advertisers over Microsoft's Bing.
Google is working on an AI model to translate hard-to-read handwriting, like on doctors' notes. The company announced it's working with pharmacists on the AI model that will be in Google Lens. Doctors' handwriting can potentially lead to deadly consequences for patients, Time reported, citing a 2006 study from the National Academies of Science's Institute of Medicine. However, a 1996 study published in the National Library of Medicine found that doctors' handwriting is no worse than that of people who aren't doctors. "This study fails to support the conventional wisdom that doctors' handwriting is worse than others'," the study's authors concluded.
