That was after she worked as a public relations executive for over 10 years in the Middle East, most notably as Google's head of communications for that region. One habit helped Abouelenein continue advancing her career even after starting over in another country, she tells CNBC Make It. Though she's a public relations veteran and successful CEO, she still took a "finance for non-finance executives" course last year. Why the U.S. government is investigating Google

Google, the online search and digital ad goliath, is the first U.S. tech giant to land in federal court fighting antitrust concerns in decades. Google controls an estimated 88% of the market for general search online, according to the August opinion from Judge Mehta. And late in 2023, a jury delivered a guilty verdict against Google in a trial about business practices related to the Google Play app store. In September 2024, Epic filed an additional antitrust lawsuit against Google and Samsung, alleging that the company continued to use its monopoly power to unfairly harm competition. Watch the video above to see why the U.S. government is investigating Google.

Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, speaks at the Gamescom conference in Cologne, Germany, on Aug. 23, 2023. Microsoft will allow people to buy and play video games through its Xbox app for Android starting in November, the company said on Thursday. The move is an immediate consequence of a U.S. judge ruling on Monday that Google will have to present alternatives to its Google Play app store on Android devices. Currently, people can download games to Xbox consoles through the Xbox app for Android, and those who pay for the Netflix-like Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions can stream games from the cloud in a different app. In March, the U.S. Justice Department filed an antitrust case against Apple that said limiting distribution to the App Store gives the company monopoly power.

AdvertisementFor years, the US Justice Department's lawsuit against Google's Search business has been largely ignored by Wall Street and even many of Google's employees. They also include sharing some of Google's search data with rivals. The DOJ is also considering cracking open Google's search index and forcing it to share data, including the nitty-gritty of how Google ranks website quality. The DOJ said this could include the models used for Google's AI Search features. AdvertisementThe DOJ has said it's also weighing a proposal that websites can opt out of Google's AI training and from appearing in AI search results altogether.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday disagreed with the Department of Justice's move to consider a possible breakup of Google , asserting that the company benefits consumers, businesses and the U.S."Google's an aggressive company. But I defy you to find any regular people in this country who think of Google as a bad actor," he said. "Google search is the most incredible bargain in the world, and the same goes for YouTube." Cramer also questioned the DOJ's antitrust lawsuit against Apple and the Federal Trade Commission's case that Amazon illegally wields monopoly power. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday criticized the Department of Justice's potential remedies in the Google search-monopoly case, arguing that, if they were implemented, the California tech giant would be "a shell of its former self." In early August, Judge Amit Mehta ruled that Google used illegal practices to maintain a monopoly in the internet search market. "This is devastating," Cramer said Wednesday on "Squawk on the Street," reacting to the DOJ filing. The stock has lagged the S & P 500 considerably since the monopoly ruling was handed down Aug. 5. Including Wednesday's intraday move, shares are down more than 3.5% compared with a nearly 8% gain for the S & P 500.

Prosecutors proposed remedies after Google antitrust violation ruling by a federal judge. Judge Amit Mehta previously ruled Google violated antitrust laws by securing default search deals. AdvertisementProsecutors said they're considering a requirement that Google share the data that powers a big chunk of its business — the inputs and models for Google search and search results — through an application programming interface. Another proposal would prevent the company from using its other products, such as Chrome and Android, to promote Google search over competitors. Google previously said that the company plans to appeal the ruling, which could delay the judge from imposing any remedies filed by the prosecution.

A law professor said the ruling shows how antitrust law is used against Big Tech companies. Management and law experts told Business Insider the ruling highlights how antitrust law is being used against Big Tech companies — and could cost Google billions of dollars in lost revenue. Historically, he said, liberal judges tended to favor antitrust law more than conservative ones. When Epic Games' case against Apple was similarly appealed, the Supreme Court denied requests to hear it, leaving Apple with its partial victory. The Justice Department's proposals included "behavioral and structural remedies" that would prevent Google from using its products against its rivals. GOOGL YTD mountain Google shares in 2024 Overall, Alphabet shares likely won't change much on the DOJ's initial framework in the short term, according to JPMorgan. The myriad of potential outcomes for Google means there isn't much near-term clarity for the stock. Indeed, Alphabet shares are up 15% in 2024, versus S & P 500's 21% gain. The bigger catalyst for Alphabet shares is the company's opportunity to further reduce its headcount and save on costs, analyst Thomas Champion wrote in a Sept. 30 research note.

REUTERS/Ken CedenoThe U.S. Department of Justice late Tuesday made recommendations for Google's search engine business practices, indicating that it was considering a possible breakup of the tech giant as an antitrust remedy. The DOJ also said it was "considering behavioral and structural remedies that would prevent Google from using products such as Chrome, Play, and Android to advantage Google search and Google search-related products and features — including emerging search access points and features, such as artificial intelligence — over rivals or new entrants." Kent Walker, Google's president of global affairs, said the company plans to appeal the ruling and highlighted the court's emphasis on the high quality of Google's search products, which the judge also noted in his ruling. In the second quarter, "Google Search & Other" accounted for $48.5 billion in revenue, or 57% of Alphabet's total revenue. The company holds 90% of search market share.

A U.S. judge issued a permanent injunction on Monday that will force Google to offer alternatives to its Google Play store for downloading apps on Android phones. Google will also be restricted from paying fees or sharing revenue with companies in exchange for them choosing not to compete with Google's app store. The Fortnite maker accused Google of anti-competitive practices, including paying hardware companies and Android phone makers to not develop competing app stores. Epic Games prevailed over Google late last year, and Monday's filing details the changes Google has to make. Epic Games mostly lost in a very similar suit against Apple and its control of the App Store.
