In that spirit, I asked OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard – two of the most popular generative AI tools – to do the job for me. It missed the war between Hamas and Israel. In 2024, expect more progress and more news on regulators scrambling to keep up. Next year will also be defined by bullets and ballots. NO MATTER HOW much time we spend unclogging our email inboxes on any given day, more calendar invites, premeeting memos and “urgent” tech updates will pile up tomorrow. Given the scale of the problem, it might feel like a personal email butler is necessary. Companies like Shortwave, launched by ex-Googlers, or Sanebox, a $3.49-a-month utility, offer third-party extensions that can triage your unread messages. Major email platforms are increasingly developing similar tools. When drafting a note in Gmail, for instance, you can now add context that Google’s Bard chatbot pulls from your Google Calendar, Maps searches and Google’s other apps.

The lawsuit, filed Monday, targets unnamed individuals in India and Vietnam. Google said the hackers have been tricking small-business owners into clicking on Facebook ads that offer to download Google’s Bard artificial-intelligence chatbot. When they do, the ads hit them with malware that steals their social-media credentials.

Those beliefs are known to have caused medical providers to rate Black patients’ pain lower, misdiagnose health concerns and recommend less relief. “I believe technology can really provide shared prosperity and I believe it can help to close the gaps we have in health care delivery,” Omiye said. In 2019, for example, academic researchers revealed that a large hospital in the United States was employing an algorithm that systematically privileged white patients over Black patients. It was later revealed the same algorithm was being used to predict the health care needs of 70 million patients nationwide. In June, another study found racial bias built into commonly used computer software to test lung function was likely leading to fewer Black patients getting care for breathing problems.

Ali Farhadi is no tech rebel. The Allen Institute has begun an ambitious initiative to build a freely available A.I. In an industry process called open source, other researchers will be allowed to scrutinize and use this new system and the data fed into it. The stance adopted by the Allen Institute, an influential nonprofit research center in Seattle, puts it squarely on one side of a fierce debate over how open or closed new A.I. Would opening up so-called generative A.I., which powers chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, lead to more innovation and opportunity?

Economists already utilize machine learning, a branch of AI, to analyze data and develop economic projections. Korinek expects it to “revolutionize research,” according to a paper he wrote that was accepted for publication by the Journal of Economic Literature. The updates include the addition of memory storage to its developer tools for using AI models. The new features are expected to be rolled out at OpenAI’s first-ever developer conference in San Francisco on November 6, sources said. Keeping developers happy has been a major focus for OpenAI, these sources told Reuters. Earlier this year, the company rushed to release ChatGPT plugins, add-on tools that allow developers to create applications within ChatGPT. The controversy has fueled online protests on the Chinese internet against the creation and use of AI-generated images, with several other artists claiming their works had been similarly used without their knowledge. Hundreds of artists have posted banners on Xiaohongshu saying “No to AI-generated images,” while a related hashtag has been viewed more than 35 million times on the Chinese Twitter-like platform Weibo. Besides Trik AI, Xiaohongshu has also developed a new function called “Ci Ke” which allows users to post content using AI-generated images. Snow Fish added that these complaints had been slowly growing within the artist community but had mostly been privately shared rather than openly protested.

This week, Bard — Google’s competitor to ChatGPT — got an upgrade. One interesting new feature, called Bard Extensions, allows the artificial intelligence chatbot to connect to a user’s Gmail, Google Docs and Google Drive accounts. (Google also gave Bard the ability to search YouTube, Google Maps and a few other Google services, and it introduced a tool that would let users fact-check Bard’s responses. Bard Extensions is designed to address one of the most annoying problems with today’s A.I. Many people — including me — have most of their digital lives on Google’s apps and could benefit from A.I.

New York CNN —Google’s Bard artificial intelligence chatbot is evolving. The new features mark the biggest update to Google’s Bard in the six months since it was widely released to the public. With the new extensions, Bard will now pull information from YouTube, Google Maps, Flights and Hotels by default. Bard users can opt to disable these extensions at any time. The double check feature is designed to counter a common AI issue called “hallucinations,” where an AI tool confidently makes a statement that sounds real, but isn’t actually based in fact.

But as more people turn to this buzzy technology for things like homework help, workplace research, or health inquiries, one of its biggest pitfalls is becoming increasingly apparent: AI models often just make things up. Researchers have come to refer to this tendency of AI models to spew inaccurate information as “hallucinations,” or even “confabulations,” as Meta’s AI chief said in a tweet. A number of high-profile hallucinations from AI tools have already made headlines. Cracking down on AI hallucinations, however, could limit AI tools’ ability to help people with more creative endeavors — like users that are asking ChatGPT to write poetry or song lyrics. How to prevent or fix AI hallucinations is a “point of active research,” Venkatasubramanian said, but at present is very complicated.

The American workers who have had their careers upended by automation in recent decades have largely been less educated, especially men working in manufacturing. But the new kind of automation — artificial intelligence systems called large language models, like ChatGPT and Google’s Bard — is changing that. The jobs most exposed to automation now are office jobs, those that require more cognitive skills, creativity and high levels of education. The workers affected are likelier to be highly paid, and slightly likelier to be women, a variety of research has found. In a majority of jobs, the models could do some of the tasks, found the analyses, including from Pew Research Center and Goldman Sachs.

Since it was made available in late November, ChatGPT has been used to generate original essays, stories and song lyrics in response to user prompts. Students are already using AIAccording to a study conducted by higher education research group Intelligent.com, about 30% of college students used ChatGPT for schoolwork this past academic year and it was used most in English classes. Jules White, an associate professor of computer science at Vanderbilt University, believes professors should be explicit in the first few days of school about the course’s stance on using AI and that it should be included it in the syllabus. Las Vegas, Nevada CNN —Thousands of hackers will descend on Las Vegas this weekend for a competition taking aim at popular artificial intelligence chat apps, including ChatGPT. The hackers are working with the support and encouragement of the technology companies behind the most advanced generative AI models, including OpenAI, Google, and Meta, and even have the backing of the White House. “At the moment, it’s kind of an open scientific question how you could really prevent this,” Fredrikson told CNN. Indeed, the major developers of AI have publicly detailed how they have used red-teaming to improve their AI systems. Arati Prabhakar, the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, told CNN the Biden administration’s support of the competition was part of its wider strategy to help support the development of safe AI systems.
