Robert Downey Jr. is deep in rehearsals for his Broadway debut next month as an A.I.-obsessed novelist in “McNeal.” Next spring, George Clooney arrives for his own Broadway debut in “Good Night, and Good Luck,” and Denzel Washington returns, after a seven-year absence, to star in “Othello” with Jake Gyllenhaal. Then comes an even more surprising debut: Keanu Reeves plans to begin his Broadway career in the fall of 2025, opposite his longtime “Bill & Ted” slacker-buddy Alex Winter in “Waiting for Godot,” the ur-two-guys-being-unimpressive tragicomedy. Broadway, still adapting to sharply higher production costs and audiences that have not fully rebounded since the coronavirus pandemic, is betting big on star power, hoping that a helping of Hollywood glamour will hasten its rejuvenation. Even for an industry long accustomed to stopovers by screen and pop stars, the current abundance is striking.

That was the obvious crowd sentiment at the D23 Disney Entertainment Showcase on Friday, where the company previewed its upcoming lineup of film and streaming comfort content. D23, for those unfamiliar with the biennial pilgrimage of Disney fans to Anaheim, California, is part cosplay convention, part promotional pep fest. It was as if Disney, borrowing a line from Russell Crowe in “Gladiator,” asked, “Are you not entertained?”Hard not to be. Walt Disney Studios and AnimationAuli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson appear at the Disney Entertainment Showcase on August 9. He previewed “Dream Productions,” an “Inside Out” spinoff series, set in Riley’s mind in a time period between the two films, due to release on Disney+ next year.

Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on May 16, 2024. Passing major milestones like the 40,000 barrier the Dow Jones Industrial Average eclipsed this week makes for a nice headline, but market experts don't take much else from the move. Forty thousand "is a great milestone, but [at the] end of the day there isn't much difference between 39,999 and 40k," said Ryan Detrick, chief market market strategist at Carson Group. But the "Waiting for Godot" economic retrenchment never happened, despite wobbly corporate profits and other headwinds. Those factors outweighed queasiness over where the Federal Reserve was headed with monetary policy amid inflation that has proved surprisingly sticky.

The crypto market has effectively been on pause – aside from a quick and short-lived spike this week – as investors wait for the SEC to give the green light to a bitcoin ETF. This week bitcoin, as well as shares of Coinbase , briefly spiked on a false report that BlackRock 's proposed spot bitcoin ETF had been approved by the SEC. BlackRock first filed its application in June and several other institutional players including Galaxy followed, taking BlackRock's move as a bullish signal for bitcoin ETF prospects as well as the long-term trajectory of bitcoin itself. Although no bitcoin ETF has been greenlit still, Novogratz highlighted BlackRock's bitcoin blessing on Wednesday as another sign that "the dialogue with the SEC is all heading in the right direction." Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood echoed that sentiment this week, telling CNBC's "Halftime Report" the "SEC is engaging with us for a bitcoin ETF application.

CNBC's Jim Cramer said Wednesday that if investors are waiting for the market to broaden for a rally, they may as well be "Waiting for Godot." Cramer examined the ten worst performers for the first half of the year in both the Dow and the S&P 500, explaining the internal and external challenges these companies might be facing. "How the heck can this market broaden out when so many companies have simply become have-nots, either because of the yield curve or lawsuits or sector-wide woes that prevent them from doing well in this environment," Cramer said. In the Dow, Johnson & Johnson , which is owned by CNBC's Charitable Trust, Walgreens and Nike are among the worst performers. "So why not just go with what's working instead of waiting for what's clearly not working, and stop thinking that things have to broaden out before you should get interested," he said.

For just shy of a year now, the bond market has been signaling that a recession is on the horizon. And for the better part of the past six months, the stock market has been ignoring it. "The market's certainly not acting like it would if this 'Waiting for Godot' recession was right around the corner. "I would say it's much more about what started this conundrum, the combination of pandemic policy, pandemic reopening and hyperaggressive monetary policy. A key narrative from those looking for recession is the lag effects that Fed policy will have.

So what does the rest of the year have in store for Wall Street? Unfortunately, Wall Street is unlikely to receive the clarity it seeks anytime soon. Still, economists at the Federal Reserve believe that a recession seems more likely by the end of 2023 than not. AI boom: Wall Street has a lot to worry about, but there’s at least one source of market euphoria: artificial intelligence. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre accused DeSantis of not wanting a workable, bipartisan solution on immigration. “Obviously,” DeSantis said, “it’s sad that Martha’s Vineyard people deported them the next day.
