Jim Justice won the state’s open Senate seat Tuesday, NBC News projects, moving Republicans one step closer to flipping the balance of power in the chamber. Justice faced little competition from Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott, a Democrat, in a race that Republicans were heavily favored to win after the retirement of independent Sen. Joe Manchin, who left the Democratic Party in May. Justice won election as governor in 2016, the year Trump won the state by more than 42 percentage points. After months of publicly clashing with his party, Manchin announced he wouldn’t seek re-election. But Justice cruised to victory, defeating Mooney by 35 points in May, and faced little political opposition since.

SAN DIEGO — Former military defense contractor Leonard “Fat Leonard” Francis was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years in prison for masterminding a decade-long bribery scheme that swept up dozens of U.S. Navy officers, federal prosecutors said. The Malaysian defense contractor was a key contact for U.S. Navy ships at ports across Asia for more than two decades. He pleaded guilty in 2015, admitting that he had offered more than $500,000 in cash bribes to Navy officials, defense contractors and others. While awaiting sentencing, Francis was hospitalized and treated for renal cancer and other medical issues. The felony convictions of four former Navy officers were vacated following allegations of prosecutorial misconduct.

Glenn Youngkin’s effort to purge 1,600 people he says are suspected noncitizens from the state’s voter registration rolls using records from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Nadra Wilson was also listed as a noncitizen and was purged from Virginia’s voter rolls. She also didn’t realize she had been purged from Virginia’s voter registration rolls until she received a call from CNN. She said she is still undecided but “I have the right to vote.”Saule Bohoney was also wiped off of Virginia’s voter registration rolls.
