The West WingOne of Trump’s most important picks will be his White House chief of staff. Karoline Leavitt, who was Trump’s campaign spokeswoman, is being considered as White House press secretary – a job that typically is the most public-facing position in the White House. National security postsTrump has suggested his national security team would be tasked with reassessing the United States’ posture toward Ukraine and Russia, China, Iran, and the simmering conflict in the Middle East. The debate over a renewed Trump’s “America First” agenda is expected to pit Republican national security hawks against the party’s isolationist wing. Secretary of state and national security adviser will be among the most hard-fought positions to stand at the forefront of those shifts.

The mayor of Waukesha, the seat of a reliably Republican county outside Milwaukee, Wisconsin, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president on Wednesday — the first time the formerly Republican city leader is supporting a Democrat for commander in chief, the campaign said. Wisconsin is a key battleground state that could be a critical piece of Harris or Trump's path to victory on election night. In 2000, just 32% of voters in Waukesha County voted for Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore, while in 2020 39% of voters there supported President Joe Biden. On Thursday, GOP former Michigan Rep. Fred Upton also endorsed Harris, saying in a statement that he has never voted for a Democrat for president "until now." Other former GOP members of Congress that have endorsed Harris include Liz Cheney, R-Wyo and Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill. Harris also touts endorsements from GOP former Sen. If you see a White family, it says they’re looking for food,” West, going off script, said in September 2005 during NBC’s “Concert for Hurricane Relief” telethon following hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in August 2005, causing severe flooding damage to cities from New Orleans to Biloxi. Comedian and actor Mike Myers, who appeared with West on the telethon, did not know about the artist’s planned comments in advance. Both regular and enhanced seats will be available for selection at booking, starting in 2025 for flights in early 2026, Southwest said. Southwest AirlinesSouthwest has already announced an improved cabin with tablet holders, charging ports, upgraded overhead bins, and better WiFi. The cabin improvements come as Southwest plans to cut some short-haul flying in favor of more lucrative long-haul operations. Southwest left four airports altogether in August: Bellingham International Airport in Washington, Mexico's Cozumel International Airport, Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and Syracuse Hancock International Airport in New York. This means Icelandair passengers can connect in the US on Southwest flights, and vice versa.

The budget airline plans to cut some 340 pilots and flight attendants from its busy Atlanta base, CNBC first reported Wednesday. Southwest was the second-largest operator in Atlanta behind Delta Air Lines, leaving customers will fewer choices out of the world's busiest airport. The airline also left four airports in August as part of a cost-cutting and restructuring plan, including Bellingham International Airport in Washington state, Mexico's Cozumel International Airport, Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and Syracuse Hancock International Airport in New York. Further changes are likely to be announced at an investor day on Thursday, which will lay out Southwest's future as we know it.

“It’s very clear that Trump wants someone who can carry the movement on,” a person close to Trump told CNN said of the Vance selection. The two became close friends, a relationship that helped Vance earn Trump’s endorsement in a contested primary for an open Ohio Senate seat. As a senator, Vance quickly won over the thought leaders of Trump’s populist movement. Airlines face numerous problems, including higher costs, such as fuel, wages and interest rates. And problems at Boeing mean airlines have too few planes to expand routes to support a record numbers of flyers. Labor costs and jet fuel prices, the airlines’ two largest costs, are both sharply higher this year. Jet fuel prices are climbing because of higher demand in the summer. Southwest announced in April that it would stop serving four airports to trim costs — Bellingham International Airport in Washington state, Cozumel International Airport in Mexico, Syracuse Hancock International Airport in New York and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Kennedy Fails to Qualify for CNN Debate
  + stars: | 2024-06-20 | by ( Chris Cameron | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. failed to qualify for the CNN presidential debate on June 27 by the network’s Thursday deadline, according to the outlet, a significant blow to his independent presidential bid that will deny him a coveted national stage alongside President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump. Qualifying for the CNN debate, one of two presidential debates scheduled before Election Day, would have been a plum prize for the Kennedy campaign. More than 73 million people watched the first debate between Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump in 2020, and Mr. Kennedy would have had the opportunity to confront his opponents in front of an extensive national audience. But Mr. Kennedy failed to meet two criteria. In the face of mounting challenges before the deadline, Mr. Kennedy had accused CNN of colluding with the Biden and Trump campaigns to exclude him from the debate, and filed a complaint to the Federal Election Commission accusing the network of violating campaign finance law.

Saul Loeb | Afp | Getty ImagesMost countries prefer alignment with the U.S. over China when the White House is occupied by a Democrat, according to Gallup poll data going back to 2007. "Significantly more countries seem to prefer U.S. leadership over Chinese leadership, at least under Democratic administrations," Gallup said in its report released Monday, adding that a Republican executive comes with a "net approval disadvantage." According to Gallup, the "bounce-back" under the Biden administration suggests that the U.S.'s net approval advantage over China is resilient, especially when accounting for more strongly aligned groups. China's favorability peaked in 2007 as it emerged on the global stage, but increased familiarity with Beijing has not boosted its appeal, Gallup said. Meanwhile, U.S. leadership has enjoyed a general net approval rate under the Biden and Obama administrations, compared with net disapproval rates under the Trump and last two years of the Bush leadership, the report showed.

Southwest Airlines and American Airlines posted losses in the first quarter of 2024. On Thursday, Southwest Airlines and American Airlines reported losses in their quarterly earnings call. Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan told CNBC the decision to cease flights had "nothing to do" with Boeing's aircraft delivery delays. "Near term, yes, we are in a tough moment," Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun said in a letter to employees on the same day.

A Southwest commercial airliner takes off from Las Vegas International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S., February 8, 2024. Southwest Airlines on Thursday posted a wider loss for the first quarter than the same period last year and warned that Boeing's airplane delays will hamper its growth into 2025. "The recent news from Boeing regarding further aircraft delivery delays presents significant challenges for both 2024 and 2025. Adjusting for one-time items, including costs related to labor contracts and fuel, Southwest lost $218 million, or 36 cents a share. “The recent news from Boeing regarding further aircraft delivery delays presents significant challenges for both 2024 and 2025,” said Southwest CEO Bob Jordan in the company’s first-quarter financial results statement. That incident prompted a three-week grounding of the Max 9, and will delay the certification of two new models of the plane, the 737 Max 7 and 737 Max 10, until at least next year. The cutbacks are the latest sign of the widening impact of the ongoing problems at Boeing throughout the air travel system. It announced Thursday that it has trimmed its order book to 19 of those jets, shifting to 737 Max 8 jets instead. Unlike all-Boeing Southwest, American’s fleet of mainline aircraft is split fairly evenly between those from Boeing and those from its rival Airbus.

Southwest Airlines is ceasing operations at four airports, and reducing flights from others, in an effort to cut costs after its growth plans were curtailed by fewer than expected plane deliveries from Boeing. The airline, which flies only Boeing 737 planes, said on Thursday that delays from the embattled aircraft manufacturer were behind its struggles. Southwest reported a loss of $231 million for the first quarter, worse than analysts expected, sending its share price down 10 percent in early trading. To cut costs because of its curtailed growth plans, Southwest said it would cease operations at four airports from early August: Bellingham International Airport in Washington State, Cozumel International Airport, George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, and Syracuse Hancock International Airport. It would also “significantly restructure” its flights from other airports, most notably by reducing flights at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

In some ways, this is classic behavior from Trump and follows multiple previous social media threats to judges, political opponents and anyone who angers him. Trump’s attacks on the judiciary play into the foundation of his political career — that he’s a rebel outsider tearing down a political system his supporters believe disdains them. In itself, the tape is an affront to the legal system and the judiciary. If the principle were applied to its full extent, it could destroy the nonpartisan legal system. In his “State of the Union” interview Sunday, Lawler, an up-and-coming New York Republican, demonstrated how Trump’s rhetoric overshadows his party.

Opinion: RFK Jr.’s VP pick is a missile aimed at Biden

CNN —Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s independent presidential campaign can’t win, but it could swing the presidency to former President Donald Trump. RFK Jr.’s namesake father was a Democratic US attorney general and a Democratic senator from New York. So was Joe’s son, RFK Jr’s nephew, Joseph P. Kennedy III. To believe that, one must ignore that Perot, like Clinton, was a change candidate; like Clinton, he was pro-choice, and like Clinton, Perot supported campaign finance reform. But you don’t need decades of experience and reams of data to see who RFK Jr’s bid hurts.

While some music critics praised Knowles' country tracks, other fans of the genre refrained from a warm welcome. Beyond just radio, Black artists and artists of color represented less than 4% of country songs played on the radio, airplay, charting songs, artists signed to major labels and award nominations, according to SongData. One such fan, Tenley Patterson, 26, said she didn't bother listening to country music before Beyoncé's releases, but was impressed with the country tracks. Rachel Whitney, head of editorial for the Nashville team, said playlists outside of the country genre are playing Knowles' country tracks, broadening its reach. The Beyoncé draw is also boosting exposure for other artists on some lists, like Lainey Wilson and Cody Johnson, who have more "traditional" country songs, Whitney said.
