CNN —SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn crew is beginning its fifth day in orbit, having marked a few record-setting milestones on a historic journey — including the world’s first commercial spacewalk. Polaris Dawn crew member and SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis emerges from the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule during the first commercial spacewalk on Thursday. The Polaris Dawn mission's Crew Dragon capsule is seen Wednesday 870 miles (1,400 kilometers) above Earth — the farthest humans have traveled since the Apollo program over 50 years ago. The riskiest part of the journey may be over, but the Polaris Dawn crew still has a key milestone ahead: coming home. Polaris Dawn mission commander and Shift4 Payments CEO Jared Isaacman is seen anchored to a ladder dubbed the "skywalker" by SpaceX during his spacewalk.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta cautioned executives at social media and other tech companies to work harder to protect voters from "deception, intimidation, and dissuasion," ahead of the November election. The letter reviewed sections of California law that prohibit interference with voting rights by misleading people about voting place and time and by using intimidation tactics. The letter follows pop icon Taylor Swift's endorsement of Kamala Harris for president on Tuesday night following the debate. Separately, X owner Elon Musk recently shared an AI-generated image portraying Harris dressed as a communist dictator. The mission, dubbed Polaris Dawn, was set to take flight as soon as 3:38 a.m. This launch attempt comes after several issues hampered the Polaris Dawn crew’s efforts to get off the ground in late August. Because carrying out a spacewalk will create a drain on oxygen supplies, the Polaris Dawn mission will have only enough life support for five or six days in space. If successful, Polaris Dawn would beat that record by about 20 miles (32 kilometers). Polaris Dawn may also mark the farthest any woman has ever gone into space.

The reviews on Wall Street are mixed concerning Monday's iPhone launch event. Apple Intelligence represents a paradigm shift for the company and the iPhone 16 is the ticket into this new generation. That's what will in turn drive demand, both in terms of Apple rolling out Apple Intelligence and developers taking advantage of the new hardware capabilities. The iPhone 16 and the Pro models will be equipped with versions of the new A18 chips. However, even those phones weren't built from the ground up in the way the iPhone 16 is to harness the full power of Apple's AI features.

CNN —SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission kicked off early Tuesday, launching a four-person crew of civilian astronauts into orbit. The company confirmed that the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft carrying the crew reached its peak altitude of 1,400.7 kilometers (870 miles) at 9:19 p.m. The Polaris Dawn mission also marks the farthest any human has journeyed since the final Apollo mission in 1972 — and the farthest into space a woman has ever traveled. The pre-breathe protocol the Polaris Dawn crew is undergoing is entirely unlike what is carried out on the International Space Station. Google said it will soon allow users to create images of people using its Gemini artificial intelligence tool, after pulling the AI image generation option in February. "We've worked to make technical improvements to the product, as well as improved evaluation sets, red-teaming exercises and clear product principles," Citron wrote. Google paused its image generation feature earlier this year after saying it was offering "inaccuracies" in historical pictures. "Of course, as with any generative AI tool, not every image Gemini creates will be perfect, but we'll continue to listen to feedback from early users as we keep improving," Citron wrote. "We'll gradually roll this out, aiming to bring it to more users and languages soon."

During Google's Pixel phone launch on Tuesday, a product director named David Citron took the stage to show off the mobile capabilities of the company's new AI assistant, Gemini. Rivals are preparing consumers for a future of AI, but Google's Gemini features are real and are shipping — at least for testing purposes — now. Google's kickoff on Tuesday could put renewed pressure on Apple, as the two smartphone market leaders race to integrate AI into their operating systems. Google's most important presentation on Tuesday was Gemini Live, its next-generation assistant. The company said Apple's approach is less private than Google's, because Gemini "doesn't require hand-off to a third-party AI provider you may not know or trust."

New York CNN —Google has pulled its controversial Olympics ad after critics blasted it for portraying what they called a bleak application of artificial intelligence. The ad showed a father using Google’s Gemini AI chatbot to help his daughter write a fan letter to US Olympic track star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. But many online questioned why Google would want to replace a child’s creativity with words written by a computer. Google initially defended the ad, which ran during breaks from the Olympics, saying it showed how Gemini could provide a “starting point” for a piece of writing. “While the ad tested well before airing, given the feedback, we have decided to phase the ad out of our Olympics rotation,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement.
