A Russian man has been rescued in the stormy Sea of Okhotsk after surviving for more than two months in a tiny inflatable boat that lost its engine, but his brother and nephew were dead, officials said on Tuesday. The prosecutor’s office in the far east of Russia said the man was rescued by a fishing vessel off the Kamchatka Peninsula on Monday. Their bodies were reportedly found in the boat when the Angel fishing vessel rescued Pichugin. Media reports said the three men had travelled to the Shantar Islands, off the north-western shore of the Sea of Okhotsk. The man was saved by Russian rescuers after drifting for 67 days in the Sea of Okhotsk.

Since April 16, sustained torrential rains have pounded the Pearl River Delta, China’s manufacturing heartland and one of the country’s most populated regions, with four weather stations in Guangdong registering record rainfall for April. Since last week, at least 44 rivers in the Pearl River basin have swelled above the warning line, threatening to burst their banks, according to state broadcaster CCTV. "It is looking like making a direct hit at Norfolk Island," Australia Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jonathan Howe told ABC television. "We might see the centre of the tropical cyclone pass directly over Norfolk Island." Norfolk Island, an Australian territory 1,500 km (930 miles) east of Sydney, covers just over 34 square km (13 square miles) in the Pacific Ocean, between New Caledonia and New Zealand. Australia's mainland will not be significantly impacted though some eastern coastal areas may experience large waves and strong winds.

Auckland Emergency Management said it was working with MetService, the meteorological agency, to track the storm, dubbed Cyclone Gabrielle. Gabrielle is sitting in the Coral Sea but is forecast to track south toward Aoetearoa, New Zealand, over the next few days and near the North Island on Monday. New Zealand weather forecaster WeatherWatch.co.nz said the cyclone, which will most likely become a Category 3 cyclone this weekend, will reach the country between Sunday and Tuesday. It added that the potential weather event would be concerning even if had Auckland not recently experienced serious flooding. Roughly one cyclone makes affects New Zealand each year.

Sea-based trials of a wave energy converter weighing 50 metric tons have produced "highly encouraging results," according to the company behind its development. On Tuesday, Scotland-based AWS Ocean Energy said the average amount of power its device was able to capture "during a period of moderate wave conditions" came to more than 10 kilowatts, while it also recorded peaks of 80 kW. In addition, AWS said its Waveswing was able to operate in more challenging conditions, including Force 10 gales. The piece of kit — which has been described as a "submerged wave power buoy" — has a diameter of 4 meters and stands 7 meters tall.
