SAO PAULO, May 16 (Reuters) - France's Thales SA (TCFP.PA) will provide maintenance services for Brazilian airline Gol (GOLL4.SA) in Brazil instead of abroad, the companies outlined on Tuesday in a deal that aims to cut turnaround time and lower costs. Under the deal, Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes SA, as the airline is formally known, will no longer need to ship its Thales equipment to the United States or France for maintenance, as they will now be repaired at a Thales plant near Sao Paulo. Thales supplies avionics to Gol, which has a fleet of roughly 120 Boeing (BA.N) aircraft, and to local rival Azul , which mainly operates Airbus (AIR.PA) and Embraer (EMBR3.SA) aircraft. Gol and Thales did not disclose financial details of their deal, but the carrier's director of maintenance, Fernando Miwa, said Thales' investments in Brazil would provide local operators with an opportunity to cut costs. "The market for this type of service in Brazil is still very limited," Miwa said.

The surprisingly strong figures sent shares in the company soaring more than 12% in Sao Paulo morning trading, with analysts highlighting improving operating figures and strong revenue trends. The firm's shares had already jumped roughly 30% in the previous two sessions after rival carrier Azul SA predicted bluer skies ahead, driving travel-related stocks in Brazil up. Analysts polled by Refinitiv had forecast a net loss of 484.75 million reais. Quarterly net revenue totaled 4.7 billion reais, up 61.7% and above analysts' forecasts of 4.46 billion. Full-year net revenue expectations were reduced by 500 million reais to about 19.5 billion reais, but diluted earnings per share in the full year were kept at 0.3 real, the airline added.

Other travel-related companies in Latin America's largest economy also soared, with shares in fellow carrier Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes SA (GOLL4.SA) and travel agency CVC Brasil (CVCB3.SA) rising 23% and 16%, respectively. The company also scrapped its forecast for roughly 3 billion reais cash burn in 2023. Azul expects to generate record revenue of 20 billion reais ($3.84 billion) this year and record earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of more than 5 billion reais, roughly 40% above 2019 pre-pandemic levels, Rodgerson said. Non-adjusted figures, nonetheless, showed a positive bottom line of 231.2 million reais, reversing the previous year's loss. Total operating revenue rose 19.4% to 4.45 billion reais in the period, slightly below analysts' forecasts, while EBITDA matched expectations at 1.1 billion, up 6.9%.

Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes SA, as the company is formally known, posted a net loss of 1.55 billion reais ($287.84 million) in the quarter ended in September, narrowing from a 2.52 billion real loss in the same period last year. The company said the bottom line was affected by foreign exchange losses, which reached a total 738 million reais in the quarter. It managed to deliver a record quarterly net revenue, more than doubling from a year ago to 4.0 billion reais and above pre-pandemic levels, a securities filing showed. Gol also updated some of its full-year forecasts to reflect higher jet fuel prices, current ticket sale levels and 2022 results so far, it said. Gol kept its full-year net revenue forecast at 15.4 billion reais and said diluted earnings per share are expected to come in at zero, from a non-available estimate earlier.

Ferrer, 39, has worked for the company since 2003, having also served previously as chief planning officer.
