The US government tracks what percentage of each car’s parts is made “domestically.” But under current trade law, both Canadian-made parts and US-made parts are counted as the same domestic content. “Yes, it’s America’s truck, assembled in America, but not with American parts,” Ivan Drury, director of insights for Edmunds, told CNN. Domestic parts could be tough to findFinding domestic supplies for many of the imported car parts would be difficult. Even if an American parts supply could be found, in most cases it would be more expensive. Fewer imported cars would raise all pricesTariffs on imported vehicles likely would also lead to higher prices on cars that are assembled here, since it would limit the supply of vehicles in the US market.

While leaders of the two nations continue to butt heads, US consumers have paid the price, shelling out more money on goods imported from China. Now Trump is focusing his attention on America’s largest and third-largest trading partners: Mexico and Canada. It’s a “capital junkie” that’s been on a yearslong binge of unprecedented spending on all-electric and autonomous vehicles. Capital junkieThe latest cost-cutting cycle comes nearly a decade after an infamous Wall Street presentation by late-Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne called “Confessions of a Capital Junkie.” The April 2015 report highlighted the industry’s massive capital spending on overlapping or niche products that Marchionne was convinced could be solved through consolidation and shared capital spending. That’s shareholder money.”Most capital spending by automakers isn’t wasted, but the industry isn’t as efficient as other sectors, with minimal return on invested capital. While losing ground in China, GM has been among the most aggressive in spending on EVs and self-driving vehicles. GM and Hyundai this summer entered into an agreement to explore “future collaboration across key strategic areas” in an effort to reduce capital spending and increase efficiencies.

Formula 1 announced Monday that it has approved the entry of GM and Cadillac as a new team on the grid, bringing a storied American car maker into the pinnacle of motorsport. But the added promise from GM to become a “works” team — building both a car and a power unit — led to a breakthrough. It will be the first time since 2016 that F1 has had more than 10 teams on the grid. One of those existing teams, Haas F1, is owned by American Gene Haas with headquarters in North Carolina. The move sets up a clash of two American car giants, GM and Ford, in Formula 1.

Toyota, which was once criticized for its slow adoption of EV technology, is now enjoying big increases in hybrid sales. That is elevating the brand's cache among green-car shoppers in general, with Toyota often at the top of brand considerations for EV shoppers today. This is due to unprofitable EV investments, Chinese market losses, and more domestic competition. Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis plan to slash thousands from their workforce in the coming months.
