I talked to Samuel Freedman, a Columbia Journalism School professor, about his recent book about Humphrey and the 1948 Democratic convention in Philadelphia. The book’s title, “Into the Bright Sunshine,” is taken from a line in Humphrey’s rousing speech on civil rights. In 1968, the Democratic Party was operating under old rules in which primary voters actually had relatively little direct effect on delegates. When Strom Thurmond and the Dixiecrats bolted from the Democratic Party in 1948, that’s the beginning of the vast majority of the White South becoming Republicans, stepping away from the Democratic Party. Fourteen-year-old Kevel, formerly known as Adzerk, sells software that brands, including Klarna and Delivery Hero, pay a monthly fee for to manage advertising businesses on e-commerce websites. Kevel's products help retailers sell search ads on e-commerce websites, provide an ad server to manage and place ads, and give access to an audience tool that collects retailers' first-party data. Kevel competes with a growing number of adtech firms that help retailers stand up ad businesses, like Criteo, Epsilon, and Microsoft. Kevel doesn't sell ads, which Avery said the firm benefits from as more retailers like Target's Roundel take their ad businesses in-house.

In 1663, it was granted a monopoly by King Charles II for the British slavery trade. In 1794, Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin, a machine that would transform the U.S. slavery economy. Mill owners including the Arkwrights, one of the richest families in the industry, were Smith family clients. Two British travel writers visited Farm Pen in 1837, when the land was still in Smith family hands.
