I was the girl named Fred"She's a girl, but her name is Fred?" He thought it'd be cool to have a daughter named Fred. Apart from the odd Uber driver asking me if my dad or brother had ordered the ride for me, it wasn't a big deal to be a girl named Fred growing up. MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) — The hallways of Bacone College are cold and dark. In the college’s historic buildings, there are leaks to plug, mold to purge and priceless works of Native American art to save from ruin. Founded in 1880 as a Baptist missionary college focused on assimilation, Bacone College transformed into an Indigenous-led institution that provided an intertribal community, as well as a degree. Across the country, there are only a few dozen tribal colleges, according to the American Indian College Fund, a nonprofit that supports Native American access to higher education. Tribal colleges must be sponsored by a federally recognized tribe and have a majority Native student enrollment.

This post originally appeared in the Insider Today newsletter. In today's big story, former Goldman Sachs partners explain what led them to leave their prestigious positions within the bank. A recent Insider investigation by Dakin Campbell and Emmalyse Brownstein found that at least 202 partners have left the firm during CEO David Solomon's volatile five-year tenure. And while Solomon's strategic missteps were a key talking point for many, not all the former partners bashed the CEO. This was “Soul Train,” the music television series that served as Blackness’ binoculars. In the middle of the Black Power era and feeding from the civil rights movement, “Soul Train” provided a fresh opportunity for Black people to see and celebrate themselves. “We wouldn’t have a house party or at a club where we weren’t doing the ‘Soul Train’ line,” she said. “Those were the fits and the looks and the moves where I think ‘Soul Train’ probably had its biggest influence.”Still, Cochrane, a Gen X-er, says that her era of the “Soul Train” — and the “Soul Train” line — moved with the times. “But it was on ‘Soul Train’ that we got to see our favorite artist, hear our beloved songs, get our style trends and language.

What the heck is going on at Goldman Sachs

It's been non-stop negativity over at Goldman Sachs recently. The bad news just keeps rolling in over at Goldman Sachs. The Economist put a fine point on this earlier this year when it ran a cover story titled "The humbling of Goldman Sachs." But Goldman Sachs' historic partnership model has given it a distinct culture, where these kinds of things matter. Whatever the truth is, it's clear that Goldman Sachs and David Solomon are going to remain in the headlines for some time.

I followed the river toward the Uffizi Gallery where I stopped, enchanted by the scene below. It’s “a search for the delectable, delicious, almost gustatory delights of the moment,” as they put it. Other times, an object or architectural detail that piques your interest — a gate, a gargoyle — provides a portal to another time. Stories of vanished ages can be triggered by a single stone, then explored back home through books and websites. Being in a big city among so many strangers can be at turns exhilarating and disturbing.

That failure has helped keep climate finance at the top of the agenda at annual U.N. climate conferences, such as last year’s COP27, held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Some officials from potential recipient countries say that, before more money starts to flow, clearer definitions of what qualifies as climate finance and more transparency in reporting contributions are needed. As if all that wasn't enough, the leadership at Goldman Sachs had another cross to bear on Tuesday: two of its high-profile partners exiting the bank. (In fact, he made our annual list of rising stars on Wall Street in 2020.) That begs the question: Has Goldman Sachs' partnership lost some of its luster? And here's a running list of partners who have left Goldman Sachs under David Solomon. According to The Wall Street Journal, many of the industry's power players aren't looking forward to Biden-Trump part II.

Experts have analyzed a pile of severed hands found in a 3,500-year-old temple in ancient Egypt. Their study suggests soldiers took the hands of slain enemies and presented them to their ruler. But archaeological records have suggested that severed hands were presented to kings after big battles. The severed hands could prevent the soldiers from fighting in the netherworld, for instance, per Bietak. Hands were likely removed soon after deathA colorised images shows the hands in the soil.
Salah rubbed salt into United wounds with a close-range effort to score a record 129th Premier League goal for the Merseyside club, taking him past the mark of Robbie Fowler. Liverpool had thrashed United 4-0 at Anfield last April but considering the reversal of fortunes for the two clubs since, with United on the rise and Liverpool off the pace, this result was a major surprise. Liverpool's fourth win in five league matches lifted them above Newcastle United into fifth on 42 points, three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with a game in hand. "Today you could see the energy levels and everything was back, although to be fair the last few Premier League games had shown we were on the right path." Liverpool's previous biggest win over United was a 7-1 victory in 1895 when both clubs were in the second tier.
Trickery in the NFL May Be Wrong, but It Is Also Legendary

Lester Hayes of the Oakland Raiders covered with Stickum during the Super Bowl in Tampa, Fla., Jan. 22, 1984In February, when the betting lines settle and the Super Bowl looms, my thoughts turn to Stickum, that viscus goo that once coated the hands, arms and jerseys of football players in search of an edge. Stickum—the color of butterscotch, the consistency of rubber cement—became commonplace in the woolly 1970s NFL, especially in Oakland, where the Raiders wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff raised its use to an art. Thus his one-handed and even no-handed catches. (I swear I once saw him snag a touchdown with his head.)
Disney shares fall as rising streaming costs spook investors
  + stars: | 2022-11-09 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Nov 9 (Reuters) - Shares in Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) tumbled 8% premarket on Wednesday as ballooning costs at the entertainment giant's fast-growing streaming division cast a shadow on strong subscriber additions. The company missed analysts' expectations for fiscal fourth-quarter earnings, after a $1.5 billion loss in its streaming division. read more"Disney's streaming results are indicative of the tightrope it is walking," said Fred Boxa, associate director at technology and management consulting firm Arthur D. Little. Subscriber growth in Disney+ was expected to accelerate in the second quarter, she added, a sign analysts said indicated a soft first quarter. A weaker-than-expected full-year revenue growth forecast also dragged shares.
Now, Netflix is gunning for the last reel of the pay TV business: its estimated $153 billion pool of global advertising revenue. The company and some analysts see its new, cheaper ad-supported service, detailed in a rosy quarterly report on Tuesday, as a way to lift revenue as customers trim spending amid economic gloom. As TV's audience shrinks, it becomes less attractive for advertisers - and a plum target for Netflix to disrupt. Netflix plans to launch an ad-supported version of its service in the United States and 11 other countries in November. Some Wall Street analysts said the ad-supported version of the Netflix service might entice some price-sensitive existing subscribers to switch to the less-expensive option.
