5 big questions about how tech will look under Trump

He sought to swat down legal protections for tech platforms. Many Republicans are eager to see the Trump administration address what they see as “censorship” of right-leaning voices by many mainstream social media platforms. That could mean reforming or reinterpreting Section 230, which shields tech platforms from liability for their users’ posts and allows the platforms to moderate content as they see fit. In essence, Carr could attempt to pass a rule that would make it possible to sue tech platforms under that new interpretation. Ultimately, that could mean hamstringing tech companies’ efforts to reduce hateful or false content on their platforms.

The tariffs would be a significant escalation of Trump’s previous proposal, which was already a major increase on more targeted tariffs enacted during Trump’s first administration and kept in place by President Joe Biden. Canada is similarly considering its own options, including possible tariffs on U.S. goods, according to The Associated Press. America’s biggest import from Canada is oil — and any increase in energy prices would likely be felt throughout the economy. And in her statement reacting to Trump’s posts, Mexico’s Sheinbaum stated caravans of migrants were no longer reaching the border. And now he’s talking about tariffs to punish Mexico and Canada for not enforcing drugs and migrants across the border.

A judge on Wednesday dismissed a defamation lawsuit that Trump supporter Ray Epps brought against Fox News, bringing the yearlong legal battle to a close. Epps, a Jan. 6 defendant, argued in a July 2023 lawsuit that Fox News told a "fantastical story" that Epps acted as an undercover FBI agent who was responsible for violence during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Carlson and Fox News parted ways in April 2023, and The Tucker Carlson Network did not immediately respond to a request for comment either. In an August 2023 filing, lawyers for Fox News argued that Epps' lawsuit "is a direct attack on the First Amendment." As of Aug. 6, more than 1,488 defendants have been charged in connection to Jan. 6, according to the Department of Justice.

On Tuesday, Trump’s transition team signed an agreement with the White House after months of postponing the traditional transition process – a delay that Biden officials warned could undermine an orderly transfer of power and pose national security risks. In a statement announcing the agreement, the Trump transition said it will use its own security and information systems, its own office spaces and maintain its own ethics plan. The transition team said its ethics plan will be posted online in compliance with federal law. Several of Trump’s picks have vast personal fortunes and deep ties to the private sector. New York CNN —A federal judge on Wednesday tossed a defamation lawsuit brought by an Arizona man targeted by conspiracy theorists against Fox News, accusing the right-wing network and former primetime host Tucker Carlson of spreading false narratives about the January 6 attack. As part of the bogus narrative, several right-wing personalities, including Carlson, claimed a former Trump supporter, Ray Epps, was a federal agent who helped incite the attack. “Following the dismissals of the Jankowicz, Bobulinski, and now Epps cases, FOX News is pleased with these back-to-back decisions from federal courts preserving the press freedoms of the First Amendment,” Fox News Media said in a statement. Fox had sought the lawsuit’s dismissal for some time, arguing that its hosts and guests were simply raising questions when they suggested Epps had instigated the January 6 attack. Greg Abbott challenged President Joe Biden at almost every turn on the handling of the US southern border, as the state grappled with multiple border surges. Abbott described the upcoming border actions as a coordinated effort between border states and Washington. Texas officials and federal officials have historically worked together on the US-Mexico border. Texas state officials tout the work of their operation, arguing it served as a deterrent, and federal officials cite Biden’s executive action that levied harsher consequences for border crossers. “Texas has really been a lab for how mass round-ups of immigrants would work and how you can practically do it,” said Kristin Etter, the director of policy and legal Services at the Texas Immigration Law Council.

A key challenge for all of the Trump administration’s new public health leaders, the experts said, will be keeping politics out of science. CNN has reached out to Nesheiwat and Makary for comment and did not receive a response. Some said that could put them at odds with Kennedy, whom Trump has chosen for the nation’s top health post as HHS secretary. It doesn’t seem that he has much experience working in the field of public health,” said Castrucci, an epidemiologist who is president and CEO of the de Beaumont Foundation, a nonprofit focused on strengthening the US public health system. Senate Republicans derailed President-elect Donald Trump’s first jaw-dropping pick for attorney general, Matt Gaetz. But it’s unclear if they will be able to block any other controversial nominees despite skepticism from some rank-and-file Republicans. In the weeks since Trump’s dramatic election victory, the power struggle between the president-elect and independent-minded Senate Republicans has been playing out in plain view. Senators are getting a brief reprieve from questions about Trump’s nominees as they celebrate Thanksgiving. Some Senate Republicans who leveled some of the strongest criticism at Gaetz said they could live with Hegseth, despite the 2017 assault allegations.

Republican Sen. Bill Hagerty suggested Sunday that Americans don't care about traditional FBI background checks for President-elect Donald Trump's Cabinet picks as Democrats call for deeper vetting of executive branch nominees. An FBI background check, usually used during confirmation proceedings, would likely look into allegations such as that one. But Democratic lawmakers have argued that background checks for potential nominees are critical tools when vetting potential high-level appointees. “We require these background checks of DEA agents — drug enforcement agents.
