A Dallas anesthesiologist was sentenced to 190 years in federal prison in a case where he was convicted of injecting drugs into IV bags, leading to at least one death. He was sentenced in federal court Wednesday to a total of 2,280 months, which the judge ordered to be served consecutively. Doctors began to suspect an issue with the IV bags in August 2022, after a 18-year-old patient’s condition became critical during a routine sinus surgery, prosecutors said. Video presented as evidence also showed Ortiz “repeatedly retrieving IV bags from the warming bin and replacing them” shortly before the bags were taken into surgery, prosecutors said. Doctors testified at the trial, noting that the medical emergencies occurred shortly after new IV bags were hung during the procedures.

Multiple weather fronts will push rain and snow into the Midwest, the Southeast, the mid-Atlantic and the Northeast ahead of Thanksgiving week and some of the year's busiest travel days. Rain, snow expected this weekStarting in the Pacific Northwest, a "long duration atmospheric river" was expected to bring 5 inches of rain and at least 3 inches of snow to Oregon and Northern California beginning as early as Monday, federal forecasters and academic researchers said. The rest of the country is likely to get normal precipitation or below-normal rain during that time, the prediction center said. American Airlines said in a statement Thursday that it expects to set a record for passengers served during the holiday span, with nearly 8.3 million expected. It may be too early to tell whether brewing rain and snow systems will thwart travel and spending plans.

The Dallas-area influencer who had her spider monkey taken from her Saturday after a drunk driving crash is under investigation after the monkey was determined to be malnourished, officials said Friday. Brandi Botello's spider monkey, named Jorgie Boy, was taken from her following the crash in which Dallas police arrested the driver on a charge of driving while intoxicated. She told the station she was drunk and asleep in the passenger seat while holding Jorgie Boy when the crash happened. Jorgie Boy is the size of a 1-year-old monkey even though he will turn 3 in February. It might take over a year to get Jorgie Boy to a point where he is strong enough to play with other monkeys again, Johns said.

This article is part of “Dealing the Dead,” a series investigating the use of unclaimed bodies for medical research. State regulators have ordered a Texas medical school to immediately halt its practice of liquefying bodies after using them for training and research. The University of North Texas Health Science Center said in 2020 that it would renovate a Fort Worth anatomy facility, including installing two alkaline hydrolysis units. The University of North Texas Health and Science Center stopped using unclaimed bodies following NBC News' reporting. O’Connor set a deadline of Friday for the administration to explain its use of so-called DEI policies in that program. The diversity language used in the Boeing criminal plea deal has been around since at least 2018 – during the Trump administration, according to a person familiar with the policy. Still, it has become a key holdup as O’Connor mulls whether to approve the plea deal. Now, the court battle playing out in Texas will decide whether to allow Boeing to plead guilty as part of a deal with the Justice Department to resolve a criminal investigation stemming from plane crashes that killed 346 people. The issue first arose at an October 11 hearing in Fort Worth, where O’Connor worked through the routine details of the plea deal before taking a sharp detour to ask why the Justice Department included DEI considerations in choosing a monitor.
