CNN —As the ongoing systems outage at software provider CDK Global stretches into its second week, car dealerships are racking up millions of dollars in losses, according to a new estimate. Piecemeal progressThe outage began last Wednesday after two cyber incidents halted the company’s systems, which provide software to nearly 15,000 car dealerships across North America, according to CDK. “I work at a major body shop, and it has really hurt us,” one worker wrote to CNN about the outage. “15,000 dealerships is an awful lot to have control over when you do the math,” Irvin said of CDK. And after more than a week at home, Phillips’ boss texted him to return to work on Friday.

New York CNN —Ford is recalling more than 450,000 compact SUVs and pickup trucks in the United States because they might lose drive power resulting from a battery issue, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in an alert. The models affected include Ford Bronco Sport SUVs made between 2021 to 2024 and the Ford Maverick pickups made between 2022 to 2023, specifically totaling 456,565 units. The NHTSA said that Ford discovered that an undetected low battery charge could result in a “loss of electrical accessories such as hazard lights, or cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.”“We are committed to ensuring the safety and satisfaction of our customers,” Ford said in a statement to CNN. Customers can also use Ford’s mobile service and pick-up and delivery for a fix. Notification letters will be mailed by May 13 and owners can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

CNN —If you’re thinking about buying a new car, you might be warily watching news about a possible United Auto Workers strike. It depends on the vehicle you’re shopping for and on your own level of flexibility in that choice. New vehicle inventories are leaner than they’ve been before past strikes, said Pat Ryan, CEO of the car shopping site CoPilot, which closely tracks dealership inventories. So vehicle production at Mexican and Canadian factories could well shut down at some point if a strike drags on. In some ways, you might find this all somewhat similar to car shopping during the era of post-covid vehicle shortages, said Ryan.

If Americans have experience with three-cylinder engines, it would probably have been in Europe where the engines are fairly common in tiny “city cars” used for basic, around-town transportation. Now, for the 2023 model year, there are ten different models available in the United States with three-cylinder engines, according to Edmunds.com. All of these are at least offered with three-cylinder engines, if not available only with that engine. Vehicles that would have once have been powered by eight-cylinder engines now have turbocharged six-cylinder engines, instead. GM currently offers two different three-cylinder engines and, Hommes said, plans to continue selling them even as GM moves toward selling nothing but electric passenger vehicles by 2035.

CNN —Ford has announced another SUV recall, this time impacting about 520,000 Ford Escape and Bronco Sport compacts in the United States. Some of these same SUVs were involved in an earlier recall that also involved a possibility of fire. Under the new recall, Ford dealers will install a software update that will detect a possibly cracked injector. The Ford Bronco Sport shares much of its engineering with the Ford Escape. It is unrelated to the larger Ford Bronco, a more truck-like SUV that is a competitor to the Jeep Wrangler.
