ZANUTA, West Bank—Hanaa Abul-Kbash was home with her children in this tiny village in the occupied West Bank when she says an Israeli settler, armed with a military-style rifle, barged in telling her she had to go. “I told him this has been my home for 21 years and that I would not leave,” recalls 43-year-old Abul-Kbash of the encounter in late-October. The man grabbed her by the collar, shook her violently, cocked his weapon and left, Abul-Kbash says. Days later, on Oct. 28, she and the roughly 250 other residents of Zanuta abandoned the Palestinian village.

BEITUNIA, West Bank—After more than a year of detention, Azhar Assaf has finally returned to her home in the occupied West Bank. Although she doesn’t consider herself to be political, she says she owes her freedom to Hamas. Assaf and other freed prisoners, many of whom have been held without trial, are attributing their release to Hamas, with some openly praising the group. That is helping to boost Hamas’s public image among Palestinians amid a war with Israel that has left more than 15,000 dead in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to authorities in the enclave. The numbers don’t distinguish between militants and civilians.

At Rami Hijjo’s home in Gaza City, showering is a luxury of the past. The taps are running dry and he spends hours each day trying to procure rationed drinking water that isn’t even clean enough to make tea. “Sometimes the water is salty and the tea we prepare with it is murky,” said the father of three, a former humanitarian worker.

BAGHDAD—The U.S. is rushing to support Middle East leaders facing domestic turmoil over the Israel-Hamas conflict, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken making two surprise visits Sunday to the West Bank and Iraq, as the Biden administration comes under pressure to secure a pause in fighting and ease regional tensions. The unannounced stops, first to the West Bank city of Ramallah, and then, to Iraq’s capital, Baghdad, followed a summit of Arab leaders Saturday in Jordan, where Blinken reassured Middle East allies that the U.S. would work to keep the conflict from spreading and help Palestinian civilians caught in the unfolding humanitarian crisis. Blinken departed Baghdad late Sunday for Ankara, where he was expected to hold discussions with his Turkish counterpart about humanitarian aid and the collective interest in preventing a broader conflict.

QUSRA, West Bank—On the morning of Oct. 12, Hani Odeh was considering a problem: how to get the bodies of four Palestinians shot dead during an attack by Israeli settlers to the cemetery in Qusra, where he is mayor. The four men had been killed the day before. Israeli police are still investigating the circumstances of the deaths, which came after Hamas’s massacre of over 1,400 people a few days earlier, and the Israeli military had instructed the mayor to change the route of the cortege from the hospital to avoid inflaming the situation further. Odeh, smoking cigarettes in his office, the customary portrait of Yasser Arafat hanging above his desk, said he complied.

A blast went off at a building on the premises of the St. Porphyrius Greek Orthodox Church campus in Gaza City on Thursday night while dozens of Palestinian families were sheltering there. Rescuers were pulling people out of the rubble, several of whom were injured, according to people at the site. Majdy Jildah, who had been seeking refuge at the church, said about 500 people had been sheltering on the church campus, including about 80 in the church council building where the explosion occurred. Dozens were inside the assembly hall of the church, which was also damaged. The church is one of the oldest in the world.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi said that Israel could move Palestinians affected by the fighting in Gaza to the desert in southern Israel instead of asking Cairo to host them. Egypt is opposed to hosting any Palestinians on its territory despite coming under intense pressure to allow refugees to cross the border to the Sinai Peninsula to escape an Israeli bombing campaign and expected ground invasion. “If the Palestinians are transferred to Egypt...Sinai will be a base for operations against Israel and in this case, Egypt will be labeled as a base for terrorists,” he said. In 1948, after the creation of Israel, tens of thousands of Palestinians flooded into Egypt, turning the town of Rafah into a refugee camp.

The United Nations said more than a million people, almost half the total population of Gaza, have been displaced since the Israeli military laid siege to the enclave and began a campaign of airstrikes in retaliation for the Oct. 7 assault on southern Israel by Hamas, the U.S.-designated terrorist group that controls Gaza. Hamas killed at least 1,400 Israelis and took at least 199 people hostage in its attack.

An explosion rocked a hospital in Gaza on Tuesday, killing hundreds in one of the deadliest single incidents of violence in the strip—hours before President Biden was expected to visit Israel in a show of support. Hamas and Palestinian officials blamed Israel and said at least 500 people were killed. Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office said there were “clear indications” that the blast was a misfire by the militant Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which the group denied. The source of the explosion couldn’t be immediately verified.

Conditions in southern Gaza have become so desperate that some civilians who fled there said they are now returning to the north , where bombing is more intense. Feda Bassiouni, a 33-year-old mother, left her home in Gaza City and headed to southern Gaza on Saturday with her 2-year-old daughter, thinking they would be safer there. But short of food and water, she said the search for refuge feels pointless and she is considering returning home. “If we’re going to die anyway, I’d rather die in my own home,” she said. “I don’t know if my house is still there, but I’m sure to find some of my daughter’s toys.”

Israel continued to pound the Gaza Strip on the 10th day of fighting, in response to attacks launched by Hamas militants from the enclave that left at least 1,400 people dead and almost 200 held captive. A flurry of international diplomacy is underway to prevent a wider regional conflagration, allow aid to enter Gaza and some civilians out. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Israel on Monday for the second time since the Oct. 7 attacks.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas criticized the actions of Hamas in a phone call with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, according to Palestinian news agency WAFA, his first public comments on the group since the Oct. 7 killings of Israeli civilians by Hamas. Abbas, who said Hamas’s actions don’t represent the Palestinian people, called for the release of “civilians, prisoners, and detainees on both sides of the conflict.” He also urged an “immediate cessation of Israeli aggression against Palestinians” and called for the opening of urgent humanitarian corridors to Gaza.

Hamas's idea for Saturday's attack on Israel dates to 2021, when the militant group began preparing intensively by studying the tactics and strategies of its opponent, according to Abu Obaida, the spokesman for Hamas's military wing, on its Telegram account. "Our forces achieved an unprecedented military victory in the history of conflict with the Zionist enemy," he said. Already, he said the result was "more than we had planned." The group's plan was to deploy 3,000 fighters for the battle, and another 1,500 for backup and support. It studied everything from how the Israeli military trains and deploys its soldiers, to the land and weather conditions.
