CNN —Italian alpine skier Matilde Lorenzi died aged 19 from injuries suffered in a training accident, the Italian Ministry of Defense confirmed Tuesday. The rising skiing star suffered a serious crash during a training session on the Grawand G1 slope in Val Senales, South Tyrol, Italy, according to an International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) statement. “I will always remember her with a smile, with her determination and drive,” her older sister Lucrezia Lorenzi – a World Cup series skier – told CNN affiliate SkyTG24. The 19-year-old was Italian junior champion last season in the overall standings and super-G, according to the Olympic website. US alpine ski star Mikaela Shiffrin was one of many who expressed sadness, reposting images of Lorenzi captioned with broken hearts on her X account.

19-year-old Italian skier Matilde Lorenzi died after a crash during a training session in northern Italy, the country's defense ministry announced on Tuesday. The "promising Italian skier" fell while skiing on the Grawand G1 slope in Val Senales, a valley in northern Italy’s South Tyrol province, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation said in a statement. "The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) extends its deepest condolences following the tragic loss of Matilde Lorenzi," they said. Many former Olympic skiers, like Italian Olympic skier Luca De Aliprandini, Spanish Olympic skier Juan del Campo and Swiss Olympic skier Michelle Gisin took to the comments of the FIS Instagram post to pay their own respects to Lorenzi. CNN —Italian World Cup speed skier Jean Daniel Pession and his girlfriend, Elisa Arlian, died in a mountain accident in northwest Italy, the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) confirmed. “A terrible tragedy struck the world of winter sports and speed skiing in particular,” the federation said in a June 1 statement. “In a tragic mountain accident above Champoluc (Aosta), Jean Daniel Pession, a 28-year-old World Cup team member, lost his life. Together with Pession, his girlfriend also died,” FISI added. According to the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), Pession finished 15th in the 2021 World Cup standings for speed skiing.

A professional skier and his girlfriend fell more than 2,000 feet to their deaths while mountain climbing in the Italian Alps, sports officials in the country said. As is common in climbs of this kind, they were tied together. They were alone, so it is not known precisely how or why they fell. When family members reported them missing, rescuers began a search. The Italian television channel TG3 reported that the pair were almost at the summit when they fell.

CNN —Sofia Goggia has become the latest skier to suffer a serious injury this season, after the Italian star broke her leg during a training crash on Monday. In a statement on Monday, the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) said Goggia underwent “perfectly successful” surgery on a “displaced joint fracture” on her right leg. Goggia is the reigning World Cup downhill champion and is currently leading this season’s competition. “Another injury that interrupts my chase after a new Downhill World Cup title,” Goggia said in the FISI statement. It’s also another incident involving a World Cup skier this season.

Former world downhill medallist Fanchini dies aged 37

Feb 8 (Reuters) - Italian Elena Fanchini, who won the downhill silver medal at the 2005 Alpine skiing world championships, has died aged 37, the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) said on Wednesday. Fanchini, who took part in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics, was forced to withdraw from the 2018 PyeongChang Games after being diagnosed with cancer. "At the end of a serious illness, Elena Fanchini passed away at her home in Solato (near Brescia)," FISI said in a statement. Fanchini also participated in six World Championships and made four World Cup podiums, all in downhill, including two victories in Lake Louise, Canada in 2005 and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy in 2015.
