Just 20 years ago journalists covered the tech industry "like it didn't matter, like it was this hobbyist, interesting, plucky thing." The pro-tech media gives tech's main characters the chance to write their way back to the original storyline. Trae Stephens, a partner at Founders Fund, described Pirate Wires as a kind of daily affirmation for Silicon Valley. Of the members of the news media I talked to about pro-tech media, some were backhandedly laudatory.

Since Harris kicked off her presidential campaign, there’s been a string of good news for the US economy. Harris will have Biden’s mostly strong economy to run on. By June 2021, Biden’s sixth month in office, the nation’s inflation rate jumped to more than 5%. After the Federal Reserve hiked interest rate hikes to a 23-year high to stamp out inflation, the economy — eventually — started to run at a slower pace. The Biden administration canceled $168 billion in student loan debt for 4.8 million Americans.

While we didn't work together directly, I interacted with him sometimes. But even back then, I knew that dating a coworker was a bad idea. AdvertisementThough our company didn't forbid colleagues from dating one another, we both already sensed the taboo nature of our dalliance so we tried to keep it a secret. When you add in the chance of sexual harassment allegations, I would never recommend dating a coworker. Even if you work in different departments, dating a coworker is opening a Pandora's box of emotions that are difficult to navigate professionally.

It's an old Silicon Valley philosophy packaged anew: Growth without guardrails. Silicon Valley enters the age of e/accAndreessen and other prominent Silicon Valley figures such as Y Combinator president Garry Tan have quietly added the term e/acc to their social media profiles. In his manifesto, Andreessen calls it "techno-optimism." To some extent, it's a repackaging of what Silicon Valley has always peddled — let us build, grow, and make money without limitations. "Techno-optimists believe growth is progress," Andreessen argues, adding that growth is driven by the progress of technology without hindrance.

Introduced in 1998 when Netflix first launched, the DVD service promised an easier rental experience than having to drive to the nearest Blockbuster or Hollywood Video. McEvoy has remained faithful to Netflix’s DVD service so he can keep watching Bollywood and obscure independent films not often found on streaming services. Bill Rouhana, the CEO of Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment – which owns DVD rental service Redbox – told The Hollywood Reporter in April he hoped to purchase Netflix’s DVD business. Still, he said, he’s “sad” to see Netflix’s DVD service depart. “I absolutely would not have been able to find all of those movies [I’ve watched] if not for the Netflix DVD service,” he said.

Throughout the play the Roman warrior Coriolanus is alternately drawn toward and repelled by his military rival Aufidius. He dreams of Coriolanus nightly, and the two are locked in mortal combat, a fight to the death, mutually assured destruction. — Iago, “Othello,” Act 1, Scene 1I taught this play every summer for almost 20 years to first-generation American high school students. LGBTQ+ people from China, frequently scorned and ostracized at home, are coming to Thailand in droves, drawn by the freedom to be themselves. Thailand doesn't keep figures on LGBTQ+ tourists. But through mid-August, it has counted 2.2 million Chinese tourists out of an overall 16 million. But LGBTQ+ people in China face other pressures to conform that can make the free expression of their identities difficult. Another draw for tourists, inside and outside the LGBTQ+ community, is Thailand’s loose enforcement of prostitution laws and renowned nightclub shows.

Jakub Porzycki | Nurphoto | Getty ImagesIt is difficult to estimate how much college market share Bed Bath had in total. She said the company's growth has been fueled by college students who want uniquely decorated rooms that reflect their personalities.

Adani case threatens watchdog’s rising credibility
  + stars: | 2023-07-06 | by ( Shritama Bose | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
In June the Securities and Exchange Board of India, the country’s markets regulator, disciplined two media tycoons for alleged wrongdoing and strengthened disclosure norms for foreign investors. Going all-in on the Adani case would entail working with other law enforcers, such as the Directorate of Enforcement and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence. Unless Buch’s team pulls out all the stops, the regulator’s toughest test under her leadership so far is a threat to its rising credibility. The markets regulator on June 12 barred Zee Entertainment Enterprises CEO Punit Goenka and Chair Emeritus Subhash Chandra from holding key managerial positions in any listed company. In a separate order dated June 22 Sebi barred Eros group Managing Director Sunil Arjan Lulla and three group entities including Eros International Media from the securities market, citing accounting irregularities.

What Chinese Calligraphy Taught Me About Myself
  + stars: | 2023-06-27 | by ( Jerrine Tan | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
In calligraphy, the idea is to replicate the old masters’ techniques, thereby refining your own. I was trying to make sense of this tangle by writing lines, but at its heart, calligraphy is a sensuous practice. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could transcend its own cultural constraints. I had been learning calligraphy to try to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. In my visceral responses, I observe how calligraphy reveals our intuition for beauty.

The secret queer history of flowers
  + stars: | 2023-06-25 | by ( Aj Willingham | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Many of these flowers have deep connections to queer icons or are echoed in other queer symbols. (Even more complex emotions like, say, bashfulness, were associated with their own flowers, which surely wasn’t confusing at all.) It makes sense, then, that queer communities would find both beauty and belonging by continuing this interesting tradition. Today, the lavender flower still appears in newer symbols of queerness. The Japanese word for rose is pronounced “bara,” and experienced a resurgence in queer media in the 1960s and 1970s.
