A view shows the Milan stock exchange building, as stocks slid in the first hours of trading after fears that the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank could trigger a broader financial crisis, in Milan, Italy, March 13, 2023. REUTERS/Claudia Greco Acquire Licensing RightsMILAN, Nov 10 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Italy is scrambling to make its stock market more attractive. Over the past few years, some prominent companies have moved their listing venue abroad. Companies rushing to list in the Netherlands are no doubt attracted by its lax approach to companies with dual voting share classes. Doubts over the sustainability of Rome’s high public debt push up listed companies’ cost of capital, depressing their valuations and making the stock market less appealing.

It’s more or less how another 216 companies backed into public markets in 2021, according to SPAC Research. They’re on track to miss the mark by more than 40%, delivering only about $55 billion, according to recent forecasts compiled by LSEG. The electric-vehicle industry, for one, was a serial SPAC user whose exuberance sputtered badly. Dressing them up as acquisitions of private firms by listed shell companies enables the participants to play by looser rules. SPAC investors buy shares in the empty vessel before its sponsor and takeover target agree on a valuation.

Bank of America upgraded three luxury stocks that are bucking the negative trends afflicting the broader sector in Europe. The investment bank expects profit margins to decline by one percentage point for the sector even as third-quarter revenue is seen growing modestly. SMALL MANUFACTURERS APLENTYItaly is home to thousands of small manufacturers that cover 50-55% of the global production of luxury clothing and leather goods, consultancy Bain calculates. LVMH announced in May it had taken a majority stake in Nuti Ivo Group, an Italian company that has specialised in making leather products since 1955. Kering managing director Jean-Francois Palus said the luxury group is increasingly looking to bring production in house. "Italy has not created a (major) luxury hub, but we have entrepreneurs who have the ability to activate the right relationships at the right time," said Stefania Lazzaroni, general manager at Italian luxury industry association Altagamma. "Italian groups are now more managerialised, more organised and also stronger, which makes them more open to thinking together," he said.

[1/5] Models present creations by designer Pierpaolo Piccioli as part of his Spring/Summer 2024 collection show for fashion house Valentino during Men's Fashion Week in Milan, Italy, June 16, 2023. REUTERS/Claudia GrecoMILAN, June 16 (Reuters) - Italian luxury house Valentino kicked off Milan Fashion Week's menswear shows on Friday with a lineup combining blazers and coats with shorts, as creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli sought to redefine the meaning of the masculine identity. Valentino, which is controlled by Qatari investment vehicle Mayhoola, presented its menswear collection for spring and summer 2024 in the arched courtyard of Milan's state university. Valentino ditched the co-ed show model - the mixing of men's and women's shows - which it had adopted for the last three years and returned to Milan, where founder Valentino Garavani staged the first Valentino menswear show in 1985. Milan Fashion Week includes 72 events and presentations of menswear collections.

Nudged by private equity funds, those supplying the booming luxury goods industry are now finding strength in unity. Largely family-owned and small in size, these businesses often struggle to meet the changing needs of the luxury brands they work for. "Luxury brands have been growing exponentially: our customers needed us to grow with them," said Nicola Giuntini, whose Tuscany-based company makes luxury coats and jackets for brands including Celine, Burberry (BRBY.L) and Stella McCartney. PRODUCTION NICHESItaly's manufacturing sector has also been a hunting ground for big luxury brands keen to secure their supply chain. Italian private equity firm XENON International, for example, has bet on producers of materials and finishes for luxury items which it has grouped together in MinervaHub.
