The rate dropped by 25 basis points to a range of 4.50% to 4.75%. The Fed began cutting rates in September to help boost the economy as inflation cools and the job market softens. In a September speech, Fed Chair Jerome Powell indicated that another 25-bps cut could happen before 2025 if current economic trends hold steady. Below is a breakdown of how the recent rate cuts could impact your monthly borrowing costs. The breakdown includes today's 25-bps cut and the cumulative 75-bps reduction since the Fed began cutting rates in September, as estimated by Bankrate.

U.S. homeowners are sitting on a record amount of equity, but higher interest rates over the past two years have made them reluctant to tap into it. While mortgage rates don't exactly follow the Fed's rate, home equity lines of credit, or HELOCs, are tied to it. "Over the past 10 quarters homeowners have extracted $476B in equity, exactly half the extraction we'd expect to see under more normal circumstances. Homeowners tend to use equity for home repairs, renovation projects and large expenses, such as college tuition. More supply is coming on the market, and primary mortgage rates are higher than they were over the summer.

But a series of data points showing worsening economic conditions has made some analysts believe a 0.5% cut is more likely — and perhaps even necessary. “We do not seek or welcome further cooling in labor market conditions,” Fed Chair Jay Powell said in a speech last month. “A (0.5%) cut is usually done in emergencies,” like the Covid-19 pandemic, said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s financial group. Mortgage interest rates have hit their lowest level since February 2023, while auto loan rates are also falling. A 0.5% cut would more directly affect rates tied to the fed funds rate, including credit cards, home equity lines of credit and small-business loans.

Management blamed "higher interest rates and greater macroeconomic uncertainty" for pressuring consumer spending on home improvement projects. The recent data certainly supports the idea of a rate cut at the Fed's mid-September meeting. However, that's weeks away, we know things can turn on a dime in the data and the stock market. Lower rates can certainly impact the stock market — but when it comes to picking individual stocks, we remain focused on earnings. It’s been a year since interest rates reached a two-decade high, but they may soon begin to reverse course. The Federal Reserve is expected to hold its benchmark interest rate steady on Wednesday, while signaling that a cut is possible when policy-setting officials meet again in September. If interest rates are elevated for too long, they risk weakening the employment picture. The central bank uses interest rates to influence the broader economy. Home-equity lines of credit and adjustable-rate mortgages — which each carry variable interest rates — generally rise within two billing cycles after a change in the Fed’s rates.

A Forbes Advisor survey of 1,000 Americans who plan to travel in 2024 showed the post-pandemic "revenge travel" boom is in full force, despite rising inflation. The stats weren't surprising to Thomas, who told BI that this new trend could be partly attributed to the rise of remote work. Revenge travel and other loansIt's not just remote and hybrid working that may have contributed to a rise in travel spending. Travel experts previously told BI they had noticed an uptick in clients opting for luxury air travel experiences, from private jets to first-class and premium-class plane tickets. Meanwhile, the already rich — those who make over $250,000 — only saw their childcare costs increase by about 4%. watch nowThe Federal Reserve left its target federal funds rate unchanged for the second consecutive time Wednesday. What the federal funds rate means for youThe federal funds rate, which is set by the central bank, is the interest rate at which banks borrow and lend to one another overnight. To a certain extent, many households have been shielded from the brunt of the Fed's rate hikes so far, House said. As the federal funds rate rose, the prime rate did as well, and credit card rates followed suit. If the 10-year yield stays near 5%, federal student loan interest rates could increase again when they reset in the spring, costing student borrowers even more in interest.

The Fed last raised its benchmark rate, the federal funds rate, in July to a range of 5.25 to 5.5 percent. In recent weeks, the long-term market rates that influence many types of consumer and business loans have drifted higher, even as the Fed left its key rate on hold. Car LoansHigher loan rates have been dampening auto sales, particularly in the used-car market, because loans are more expensive and prices remain high, experts said. Used-car rates were even higher: The average loan carried an 11.4 percent rate in September, matching a high set earlier in the year. If you want to finance a big purchase like a car or wedding in 2024, don't expect to get much of a break on interest rates. Instead, focus on paying down high-interest debt, especially credit cards, if you can. Since the Fed started raising interest rates in March 2020, the average interest rate for credit cards has climbed from 16% to nearly 21%, according to Bankrate data. This could include credit cards, but also mortgages, student loans, home equity lines of credit and personal loans. Most projections for a stock market decline hinge on a weakening US consumer. Bearish investors cite $1 trillion in credit card debt, upcoming student loan payments, and a depletion of excess pandemic savings. But the US consumer has plenty of capacity to spend, and that's great news for the stock market. In reality, US consumers have plenty of firepower left to spend money, grow the economy, and drive the stock market higher. And given that consumption makes up about 70% of GDP, this strength should continue to flow through to the economy and stock market.
