Elon Musk's X has struggled to contain false information about the Israel-Gaza conflict. Part of the issue is the spread of unverified videos and content that were first posted on Telegram. The fighting between Israel and Hamas isn't, of course, the first instance of a conflict to be followed via Telegram. Videos and details about an ongoing conflict often make their way to a platform like X from Telegram — and do so without their source being identified or verified. X users will share Telegram videos, often without context, to fit their narrative or suit some other ulterior motive.

Multiple military aircraft have been damaged or destroyed in Russia this month. Military analysts told The Wall Street Journal that Ukraine has likely disabled more Russian aircraft while they were sitting in bases than it had in live combat. Russia's defense ministry blamed a Ukrainian drone for that attack too. Ukrainian drone attacks have also touched Moscow in recent weeks, in some cases prompting its airports to close down. Russian officials said on Wednesday that Ukrainian drones were fired at multiple Russian regions: Pskov, Bryansk, Kaluga, Orlov, Ryazan and Moscow, Reuters reported.

The investigative news website Bellingcat reported on the Texas mall shooter's apparent neo-Nazi beliefs. Right-wing commentators on Twitter suggested that it was fake news, and Elon Musk called it a "psyop." Days later, Bellingcat's founder said its Twitter account no longer appeared in the app's search tool. Bellingcat reported that Garcia had tattoos of a swastika and other Nazi symbols, and posted about being a white supremacist on Odnoklassniki (OK), a Russian social media site. Musk tweeted.

None of these things actually happened, but AI-generated images depicting them did go viral online over the past week. The images ranged from obviously fake to, in some cases, compellingly real, and they fooled some social media users. There are also concerns that AI-generated images could be used for harassment, or to further drive divided internet users apart. Eliot Higgins, founder and creative director of the investigative group Bellingcat, posted fake images of former President Donald Trump to Twitter last week. Many of the recent viral AI-generated images were created by a tool called Midjourney, a less than year-old platform that allows users to create images based on short text prompts.

An image of Pope Francis wearing a stylish white puffer jacket was actually generated by AI. The image went viral on social media with many people not recognizing that it was actually fake. It was then circulated on platforms like Twitter with posts receiving hundreds of thousands of likes and many believing it's real, including a number of celebrities and high-profile social media personalities. It has taken social media by storm as users generate fake images of former president Donald Trump, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and President Vladimir Putin. Ajder said he's worked with Partnership in AI — a non-profit organization promoting responsible AI use — to set out guidelines for people using AI tools as well as creators of the tool.
Images appearing to show former U.S. President Donald Trump being arrested were created by an AI-powered image generator. Examples of the images shared online can be viewed (here), (here) and (here). Yevgeny Prigozhin got past UK money laundering laws using a bill in his 81-year-old mom's name. The Wagner Group boss passed the checks that allowed him to sue a UK journalist, the FT reported. At the time he was under UK sanctions for his group's role in bloody conflicts around the world. A lawyer at Discreet Law replied by saying: "We are satisfied with the [anti-money laundering] documents," according to the FT. Discreet Law founder Roger Gherson told the FT that Discreet Law "cannot comment on confidential communications with their former clients."
Elon Musk set the tone for his first full day as head of Twitter with a response to @catturd2. “I will be digging in more today,” Musk tweeted in response Friday morning. As of Friday morning, Trump’s account was still suspended, and trending topics included everything from the news of the day (Paul Pelosi) to culture (#FridayFeeling, Rihanna). “Elon” was one of the top trending topics of the morning, and many conservative influencers who had been critical of Twitter’s moderation were already celebrating what they saw as a tectonic shift. Those downloads, however, are still less than 5,000 per day, while Twitter often still sees hundreds of thousands of downloads per day, according to Adam Blacker, vice president of insights at Apptopia.
Yevgeny Prigozhin admitted to founding the Wagner mercenary firm in 2014. "I cleaned old weapons myself," the billionaire, known as "Putin's chef," said in a statement. Prigozhin previously denied founding the group and sued those who reported on his Wagner ties. "From that moment, on May 1, 2014, a group of patriots was born, which later acquired the name PMC Wagner." Timothy Lay, a coauthor of the report, told Insider that Wagner's actions — including widespread looting — were akin to "criminal violence."
