CNN —Billie Eilish has gone from teen phenom to bone fide adult, according to her brother, producer and collaborator Finneas O’Connell. O’Connell and Eilish’s parents, Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell, have also been fixtures at her previous tours, with Baird juggling everything from scheduling to making sure Eilish is fed and the elder O’Connell serving as a member of her stage crew. “I will get your tampons and cook you a burrito on a moment’s notice, even if I have to use an iron to do it,” Baird told Vogue in Tuesday’s piece. She’s also touring with her own live band for the first time and is bringing along some of her childhood friends. Hopefully, Eilish told Vogue, “it’s going to be the f***ing fun.”

CNN —Far be it from anyone to identify a defined strategy in the cat memes that have overtaken the American political conversation in a pivotal election year. Never mind the state’s Republican governor, who also counseled against a campaign visit, called out state troopers to city schools to ease concern about scores of bomb threats. Intentional or not, the insult cued a new round of stories about how the Trump campaign doesn’t seem to mind turning off women voters. Women voters have shifted away from Trump since Harris entered the race, according to polls. “Every time I do a focus group with swing voters, they bring up JD Vance talking about childless cat ladies.

It was easier even a decade ago to settle on the song of the summer. Now that summer has officially started, sample these musical confections and decide for yourself — what’s destined to become the song of summer 2024? Daniel Boczarski/Getty ImagesNot Like Us, Kendrick Lamar Credit: Kendrick Lamar, under exclusive license to Interscope RecordsHere’s a song of the summer that breaks all the rules. ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy),’ ShaboozeyShaboozey mashes up pop-country with the 2004 club classic "Tipsy" on his mournful yet singable hit, "A Bar Song (Tipsy)." Still, lyrics about dragging your increasingly drunk self from bar to bar in a desperate attempt to shed the stress of your 9-to-5 are not unrelatable.

CNN —Billie Eilish’s new song, “Lunch” is the definitive queer anthem of 2024. Eilish’s “Lunch” symbolizes the seismic evolution in queer women expression in music. Eilish’s “Lunch” is a brilliant reinvention of our freedom of queer expression, and it comes at a most desperate time. If only we tune into Eilish’s song and to its inherent humanity — carnal, raw, authentic — and recognize in it our own hidden desires that we should face with the same openness she does. What Eilish has achieved, though, with her latest album and particularly with the song, “Lunch,” is to raise the bar on the unabashed expression of queer and women’s sexual desire.

Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift Race for No. 1

A cold war between pop music titans — or at least their mobilizing fan bases and record labels — turned into a digital arms race this week as both Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish gunned for the No. 1 spot on next week’s Billboard album chart. But Eilish’s well-reviewed new album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” is challenging for No. 1 in its debut, as its 10 songs prove popular on streaming services like Spotify. (Even before those comments, Eilish’s brother and main collaborator, Finneas, had once been heard on a hot mic joking about being “sued by Taylor Swift” after performing with an artist who had criticized her work.)

ETImage “Barbie” is up for eight awards but is only the favorite for best original song. So while the Oscars have traditionally celebrated prestige films, Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster was undeniable, scoring eight Oscar nominations. Billie Eilish’s heart-wringing track “What Was I Made For?” won song of the year at the Grammys, and it is the front-runner in its Oscars category. And in 2003, Martin Scorsese’s “Gangs of New York” scored 10 nominations but no trophies. The best potential parallel to “Barbie” may be Bradley Cooper’s 2018 remake of “A Star Is Born,” which was nominated for eight Oscars and walked away with only best song.

CNN —Melissa McCarthy was the ultimate fangirl at the SAG Awards on Saturday when she asked Billie Eilish for an autograph onstage. Eilish ended up signing her name – with permanent marker – right on McCarthy’s forehead while the pair were presenting the award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a comedy series. While McCarthy attempted to continue gushing over Eilish while she was mid-signature, the singer hilariously covered McCarthy’s mouth as the audience bellowed with laughter. “We’ve actually met before,” McCarthy said, going on to correct herself that they’ve actually met three times. And one of my dogs.”She went on to gush that she actually met Eilish “in utero” before she was even born, because Eilish’s mother, Maggie Baird, was McCarthy’s improv teacher years ago.

Two of the night’s strongest performances came from young women using pianos to accompany the wispy, stratospheric upper reaches of their registers — and to comment on the tyranny of fragility and prettiness. The second was Olivia Rodrigo, who nailed the vertiginous high notes that punctuate her rock-operatic smash “Vampire,” and then riffed on the song’s theme as she smeared herself with spurting fake blood. Each performance, in its own way, felt like a rebuttal to the constricting standards to which so many young women are held. Eilish’s was about the pain of being perceived as an object; Rodrigo’s reimagined the same kind of pressure as a horror movie. LINDSAY ZOLADZ

LOS ANGELES (AP) — When the 2024 Grammy nominees were first announced, women dominated the major categories. And at Sunday's show, those nominations translated into awards: Every televised competitive Grammy went to at least one woman. But at the Grammys, where much of the focus is on performers, it appeared like women were ruling the industry. “I know that the way the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans,” she said. SZA, who led nominations with nine, took home three awards — but was completely shut out of the general field categories.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Women lead the major categories at the Grammys this year – names like SZA, Taylor Swift, Victoria Monét, Phoebe Bridgers, Olivia Rodrigo and Brandy Clark top the list. If Taylor Swift wins for “Midnights,” she will become the first artist in Grammy history to win the top prize four times. (And, conversely, artists it loves to nominate but not award: both Lana Del Rey and Miley Cyrus have yet to receive a Grammy. I'd love to see a Cyrus win, but I’ve been burned before! She’s tied with the likes of Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus with six nominations, and I think it is her time to finally take home a trophy.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — For filmmaker Issa López, the first question was where? “The moment I understood it was the Arctic, everything started falling into place,” the director of “True Detective: Night Country” told reporters in Mexico City ahead of Sunday's premiere on HBO and HBO Max. The Mexican director was looking for a region of the United States that had a totally different physical feel from the previous three “True Detective” installments, which were set in Louisiana, Los Angeles and Arkansas, respectively. Both seek to shed light on the disappearance of eight scientists from an isolated research station, and also face the unsolved murder of an Inuit woman who was an environmental activist and midwife. The series is executive produced by Foster, López, Barry Jenkins, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey and “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto.

“Barbie World” by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice will compete for best rap song. Tracks from the soundtrack also hog up four of the five available slots in best song written for visual media. Peso Pluma’s 2023 album, “Génesis,” is just tucked among the nominees for música mexicana. But música urbana — encompassing reggaeton, Latin hip-hop, dembow, Latin trap and more — is a crowded, competitive, hugely popular format. His 2023 album, “Seven Psalms,” plays as a thoughtful, complex, tuneful farewell, anticipating his death.

It is a law of nature that there is never too much cowbell. Yard Act, the post-punk band that could almost be LCD Soundsystem with a British accent and a social-media update, has re-emerged after its debut album. That means post-punk nostalgia folded in on itself like origami. The open secret of post-punk is that no matter how cynical the vocal gets, the song is always about the groove. PARELESC. Turns out it’s the same sample, a sleight of ear designed to trigger warm nostalgia, and also maybe a little confusion. Even its video is optimized for recognition, with Santana doing the same stomp Beyoncé does in hers, in an almost identical outfit. Throughout 2022, that gambit has been deployed again and again — by pop singers and rappers, established stars and newbies. Here, old songs — hip-hop classics, pop novelties and more — are scrunched and stretched sometimes to the point of absurdity. These songs are concessions that say the quiet part out loud — everyone has always been borrowing voraciously, from everyone else, constantly.
