Opinion | What to Expect in a Second Trump Term
  + stars: | 2024-11-29 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:When Donald Trump retakes the reins of the presidency in January, he will face a choice of which path to take. The first is to use the office as a cudgel, punishing his perceived enemies and rewarding his most ardent supporters, enriching himself and his family in the process. The second path is more challenging, but it’s one that could secure Mr. Trump a vaunted place in history. Imagine a presidency in which he seeks to uplift the most vulnerable and implement programs that benefit all Americans, not just those who voted for him. Admittedly, this approach would require humility and restraint, qualities Mr. Trump is not necessarily known for, but if he did embrace them, he could astonish even his harshest critics and leave a legacy that transcends personal ambition.

5 big questions about how tech will look under Trump

He sought to swat down legal protections for tech platforms. Many Republicans are eager to see the Trump administration address what they see as “censorship” of right-leaning voices by many mainstream social media platforms. That could mean reforming or reinterpreting Section 230, which shields tech platforms from liability for their users’ posts and allows the platforms to moderate content as they see fit. In essence, Carr could attempt to pass a rule that would make it possible to sue tech platforms under that new interpretation. Ultimately, that could mean hamstringing tech companies’ efforts to reduce hateful or false content on their platforms.

Almost five years after Covid blew into our lives, the main thing standing between us and the next global pandemic is luck. And with the advent of flu season, that luck may well be running out. Farmworkers have so far avoided tragedy, as the virus has not yet acquired the genetic tools to spread among humans. As bad as the Biden administration has been on pandemic prevention, of course, it’s about to be replaced by something far worse. Kennedy may even be hastening its arrival through his advocacy for raw milk, which can carry high levels of the H5N1 virus and is considered a possible vector for its transmission.

In a world where sentiment drives purchasing decisions, these differences in opinion could shape how much people end up spending this holiday season. Covid’s rampage through the country’s nursing homes killed more than 172,000 residents and spurred the biggest industry reform in decades: a mandate that homes employ a minimum number of nurses. But with President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House, the industry is ramping up pressure to kill that requirement before it takes effect, leaving thousands of residents in homes too short-staffed to provide proper care. The nursing home industry has been marshaling opposition for months among congressional Republicans — and even some Democrats — to overrule the Biden administration’s mandate. Two industry groups, the American Health Care Association and LeadingAge, have sued to overturn the regulation, and 20 Republican state attorneys general have filed their own challenge. Consumer advocates, industry officials and independent researchers agree that the incoming administration is likely to rescind the rule, given the first Trump administration’s “patients over paperwork” campaign to remove “unnecessary, obsolete, or excessively burdensome health regulations on hospitals and other healthcare providers.” Among other things, Mr. Trump aided the industry by easing fines against homes that had been cited for poor care.

That western relocation was “wildly disruptive” and should serve as a “cautionary tale” for the incoming Trump administration, said Tracy Stone-Manning, the Biden administration’s BLM director. Project 2025, a conservative blueprint written by dozens of former Trump administration officials, recommended returning the BLM headquarters to the West. Most BLM staffers already worked in states outside of DC, but a disproportionate level of senior staffers worked in the nation’s capital. But an inspector general report later found that Trump administration officials had misled Congress in statements about the relocation. Future efforts to move federal offices out of DC could lead more federal workers to unionize.

CNN —In a single post, the president-elect told the world what the end of the Ukraine war might look like. Kellogg, Trump’s 80-year-old former national security advisor, has laid out his peace plan in some detail, writing for the America First policy institute in April. Kellogg says more weapons should have been given before the Russian invasion, and immediately afterwards, to enable Ukraine to win. President Joe Biden on Thursday criticized President-elect Donald Trump's announcement that he will implement 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, saying the comments were "counterproductive." "I hope he rethinks it, and I think it's a counterproductive thing to do," Biden said, responding to a reporter's question about his reaction.
