Morris, like thousands of other customers, was snared in the collapse of a behind-the-scenes fintech firm called Synapse and has been locked out of her account for six months as of November. Then she learned how much Evolve Bank & Trust, the lender where her funds were supposed to be held, was prepared to return to her. The crisis started in May when a dispute between Synapse and Evolve Bank over customer balances boiled over and the fintech middleman turned off access to a key system used to process transactions. Synapse helped fintech startups like Yotta and Juno, which are not banks, offer checking accounts and debit cards by hooking them up with small lenders like Evolve. But that would've required more coordination between Evolve and the other lenders that held customer funds than what ultimately happened.

The total assets of TD Bank’s two U.S. banking subsidiaries will be barred from exceeding $434 billion under that restriction. “Today, TD Bank also became the largest bank in U.S. history to plead guilty to Bank Secrecy Act program failures, and the first US bank in history to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering,” Garland said. “TD Bank chose profits over compliance with the law — a decision that is now costing the bank billions of dollars in penalties. “In August 2021, a TD Bank store manager emailed another store manager and remarked, quote, ‘You guys really need to shut this down. “This settlement lets bad bank executives off the hook for allowing TD Bank to be used as a criminal slush fund.

This means that credit unions are more likely to offer good rates than banks, although depending on your local credit union, the best banks might offer better rates. Unlike traditional banks, nonbank mortgage companies like Rocket Mortgage are heavily exposed to swings in the mortgage market, depend on funding that can dry up during times of stress and don’t have stable deposits to rely on as a safety net. Despite the wonky term, nonbank mortgage companies have become vital players that make most home mortgages in the United States today. As of 2022, nonbank mortgage companies originated about two-thirds of US mortgages and owned the servicing rights on 54% of mortgage balances, according to FSOC. “Nonbank mortgage firms are thinly capitalized, which makes them vulnerable to failure if they lose financing or mortgage defaults spike,” said McCoy, a former mortgage regulator. “Starting in early 2007, we saw a tsunami of nonbank mortgage firms fail precisely for these reasons.”

The Federal Insurance Deposit Corporation, or FDIC, implemented new requirements for deposit insurance for trust accounts starting April 1. FDIC insurance generally covers $250,000 per depositor, per bank, in each account ownership category. How FDIC coverage of trust accounts has changedUnder the new rules, trust deposits are now limited to $1.25 million in FDIC coverage per trust owner per insured depository institution. Each beneficiary of the trust may have a $250,000 insurance limit for up to five beneficiaries. However, if there are more than five beneficiaries, the FDIC coverage limit for the trust account remains $1.25 million.

With the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate above 7%, sales of existing homes slowed in September to their softest year-on-year pace in 13 years. But if you're spending the same amount on rent as you would on a mortgage payment, buying could still make sense. And that negotiation can even include lowering your mortgage rate, according to Shayowitz. 4 things to considerYou can reduce your interest rate through a permanent buydown. In other words, the seller provides a one-time payment placed in escrow and used to buy down the interest rate permanently.

New York CNN —The Senate Banking Committee approved a historic marijuana banking bill last week that breaks barriers between financial institutions and cannabis companies. The legislative road ahead is tough, despite the bipartisan majority in committee, but this bill could redefine the business of marijuana. A cannabis business owner drove from Portland to Salem to deliver his taxes, and he had a backpack with $70,000 cash in it. Shutting down its DVD business could help Netflix better focus resources as it expands into new markets such as gaming as well as live and interactive content. "So why not be in a situation where you're just much more ready in case you...need to access this discount window?" An analysis of Fed data by Reuters, though, shows a lot still needs to be done to meet that goal. All told, about 3,800 banks borrowed from the discount window during the 11-year period detailed in the central bank data. The biggest banks also stepped up to borrow so as to reduce discount window stigma. Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari said small banks should think of the discount window as a backup.

FDIC launches sale of $18.5 billion of Signature Bank loans

July 28 (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) set in motion the sale of an $18.5 billion loan portfolio from Signature Bank this week, a set of loans linked to major private equity and investing firms, according to the regulator's website. The FDIC hired Newmark Group (NMRK.O) in March to sell about $60 billion of Signature Bank's loans, after state regulators decided to close down the failed lender amid a turmoil in regional banks earlier this year. The sale was launched on July 25 and is limited to FDIC-insured depository institutions, the Bloomberg report said. The notice reads that the loans for sale "consist of subscription credit facilities to private equity funds." The bank asked the court to bar the New York Fed from terminating its master account, without which it said it "cannot effectively function as a depository institution." A spokesperson for the New York Fed declined to comment. Federal prosecutors dismissed a civil forfeiture complaint and returned $53 million in seized funds to the bank. The New York Fed in 2019 said it would stop approving master accounts for some Puerto Rican banks due to U.S. sanctions on Venezuela aimed at ousting socialist President Nicolas Maduro, Reuters reported at the time. The bank said its founder, Marcelino Bellosta, has lived in the United States and Europe for much of the last 25 years.

“The Federal Reserve built the FedNow Service to help make everyday payments over the coming years faster and more convenient,” said Fed Chair Jerome Powell. FedNow instant payments won’t benefit you, however, if:You don’t have a bank or credit union accountYour financial institution is not part of the FedNow network. If your bank or credit union is among them, it may take some time before they start offering instant payments and deposits for customers using FedNow. And some initially may only offer to receive FedNow payments for their customers, but not send them. And in this first phase of use, the FedNow Service will only be available to process domestic payments between US depository institutions.
