On Tuesday, Trump’s transition team signed an agreement with the White House after months of postponing the traditional transition process – a delay that Biden officials warned could undermine an orderly transfer of power and pose national security risks. The lawsuit said Shen Yun has made hundreds of millions of dollars by exploiting young dancers it recruits from abroad, forcing them to work grueling hours and scaring them into thinking they’d face harm if they quit. According to the website, Shen Yun, along with Fei Tian Academy of the Arts and Fei Tian College — which were also named as defendants — were founded by followers of the Falun Gong faith. After the first year, she was paid $500 a month until she “graduated” from Fei Tian College in 2019, when her salary was raised to $1,000 a month, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit said she contracted measles when she was 14 but was not permitted to see a doctor. Instead, the lawsuit said, she was told to meditate to feel better and was required to work while she recovered.

Last year, in a fit of masochism, I tried to become the first person in the United States to fill out a FAFSA (short for Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form at the precise moment the Department of Education unveiled a long-delayed overhaul. I failed in my New Year’s Eve quest because the site wasn’t working, and the experience was a harbinger for millions of others. The rollout of the new FAFSA was one of the most epic digital fiascos of our time, right up there with the Obamacare website’s disastrous debut and the Equifax breach. At one school’s FAFSA completion event, only 20 percent of students finished. This week, the department tried again, opening the gates to the FAFSA website after months of additional revisions and multiple rounds of beta testing.

This may explain why two-and-a-half weeks into his transition, several of Trump’s Cabinet picks are embroiled in allegations of sexual misconduct, ethics or legal controversy. Like Gaetz, Hegseth was not prosecuted over the allegation and denies he did anything wrong. Plenty of presidents get a Cabinet pick knocked back and do just fine.

Under Trump, the U.S. Department of Education is likely to abandon its efforts to deliver wide-scale student loan relief , experts say. It has done so mostly by improving existing student loan relief programs that had long been plagued by problems, including the Public Service Loan Forgiveness initiative and income-driven repayment plans. In June, U.S. District Judge Daniel Crabtree in Wichita, Kansas, described student loan forgiveness as having an "irreversible impact," in his decision to block one of the Biden administration's relief measures. For example, in February, some borrowers saw their debts reinstated under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. In a new report, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau cites, among the errors reported by student loan borrowers, "balance reinstatements," in which a loan servicer tacks a loan balance back on to one's account.

This week, the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid expanded its "phased rollout" so all students can now apply for aid for the upcoming academic year. Up until Monday, the 2025-26 FAFSA was only available to limited groups of students in a series of beta tests that began on Oct. 1. Now, the form is open to all and the Department of Education has said it will be out of testing entirely by Nov. 22 — which puts the official launch ahead of schedule. This year, the plan was to be available to all students and contributors on or before Dec. 1. Students who submit a form during this final "expanded beta" phase before Nov. 22 will not need to submit a subsequent 2025–26 FAFSA form, the Education Department said.

CNN —Trump transition co-chair Linda McMahon is expected to be named as secretary of the Department of Education, four sources familiar with the matter told CNN. The decision took shape after it became clear that McMahon would be passed over for Commerce secretary. McMahon is also the former CEO of the WWE, which she co-founded with her husband, Vince McMahon. As head of the WWE, McMahon oversaw its transformation from a small wrestling entertainment company into a publicly traded media empire. During Trump’s first campaign for president, McMahon donated more than $7 million to two pro-Trump super PACs, according to Open Secrets.

Just ahead of the official Dec. 1 launch date, the Department of Education announced all students and families can now access the 2025-26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Select students and families were invited to fill out the 2025-26 FAFSA starting on Oct. 1 as part of a beta testing period. The application is still in beta testing as the department ensures it still functions successfully with a greater influx of applicants. But those who submit a form now while in beta mode will not need to submit another application after Dec. 1. "Students who submit a FAFSA form during any beta period…will be able to make any needed corrections to the form and will not need to submit a subsequent 2025–26 FAFSA form."

CNN —“Impoundment” is another word that Americans may need to learn in the vernacular of President-elect Donald Trump’s second term. Trump took the time to record a video about impoundment during the Republican primary season, and he promised seizing control over spending from Congress would be a top priority if he was elected. Impoundment occurs when Congress appropriates money that the president then declines to spend. As a result of these standoffs, Congress passed a law to curtail a president’s use of impoundment, particularly for policy reasons. The Impoundment Control Act of 1974 did a lot more than that, however.
