Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 9.30 million job openings in October. Job openings decreased by 168,000 in the finance and insurance industry, while real estate, rental and leasing had 49,000 fewer positions. The job openings rate dropped to 5.3% from 5.6% in September. "The current state of the labor market suggests no further recalibration is necessary to bring the labor market back into balance," said Nick Bunker, director of economics research at Indeed Hiring Lab. They also described the labor market as remaining "very competitive," and "trying to get to full staff levels."

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A planned high-speed rail line between Las Vegas and the Los Angeles area got a Biden administration pledge on Tuesday of $3 billion to help start laying track, Nevada elected officials said. Suddenly, they began signing multimillion-dollar deals with companies that made rum, tequila, vodka and other hard liquor, and the advertising was displayed for all to see. It was a sign of how justifications can change seemingly overnight, especially when money is involved. DALLAS (AP) — Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic will miss his first game of the season Friday night when he sits against the Memphis Grizzlies for personal reasons. The NBA In-Season Tournament, running this year for the first time, is the league’s idea for that mid-season boost. The media rights to NBA games are up after the 2024-2025 season, and the tournament could make the NBA’s television rights more lucrative to potential networks and streaming bidders. To add intrigue to the tournament, each of the 30 NBA teams has a distinct court design and jersey for games. The NBA’s strategy behind the colorful court designs was to attract attention — even if some of the reaction to the courts has been negative. The NBA in-season tournament is the latest example of sports leagues adapting to try to add excitment in an increasingly competitive media environment.
