In today’s edition, White House correspondent Mike Memoli files a dispatch from Rio de Janeiro on President Joe Biden's final international summit. Biden fades into the background at his final international summitsBy Mike MemoliRIO DE JANEIRO — President Joe Biden’s final international summits almost certainly would have played out differently had the elections back home gone as he had hoped. But President-elect Donald Trump cast a long shadow over a seemingly humbled Biden as he bid farewell to his counterparts here. Getty ImagesAbout 1 in 5 Americans say they regularly get their news from "news influencers" on social media, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center. Social media site X remained the most popular, with 85% of influencer respondents reporting they were on the site. Risk of misinformationQuestions around the influence of independent social media creators on politics erupted prior to and after the presidential election. Both candidates utilized social media to reach younger voters, most notably when President-elect Donald Trump appeared on Joe Rogan's podcast and Vice President Kamala Harris joined the "Call Her Daddy" podcast — both podcasts with large followings on social media. Network interviews in recent elections have tended to be more combative than those conducted on independent podcasts or social media accounts, Darr said.

After Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s dramatic performance with Latino voters, a coalition of Democratic-leaning Latino groups is grappling with the shift and trying to reconcile it with the policies they say many Hispanics support. Along with UnidosUS, Latino-focused advocacy groups such as Voto Latino, Somos Votantes, Hispanic Federation and La Brega y Fuerza Fund sponsored a poll of Latino voters. The coalition rejected national exit poll findings showing that Trump won the majority of Latino men — 55% — to Harris’ 43%. Edison Research, which conducts national exit polling for NBC News and other news organizations, surveyed 2,750 Latino voters nationally. Thirty-seven percent of male participants in exit polling identified as white, while 6% identified as Latino in the Latino groups’ poll.

Jonathan Drake | ReutersPresident-elect Donald Trump's choice of Sen. Marco Rubio as his secretary of State, arguably the world's most important diplomat, could change the dial when it comes to the U.S.' relationship with both its enemies and its allies. Here are five takeaways on the voters Trump won and what it means moving forward:The Latino realignmentA trend with the potential to remake the American political landscape is the huge shift in Latino voters toward Trump. Trump’s 1.5-point win in Osceola County flipped a location that President Joe Biden won by 14 points four years earlier. Trump’s performance similarly improved in Orange County, home of Orlando, where Biden won by 23 points in 2020 but Harris won by just 5.6 points this year. Trump’s gains are explained in part by his appeals to Black men, and his efforts to reach out to Arab American voters. Harris won by 10 points and 85,000 votes — short of the 14-point, 114,000-vote win Biden had notched there in 2020.

Donald Trump owns 16 golf courses across three continents, mostly with vibrant social-media presences. AdvertisementAt President-elect Donald Trump's golf courses, his election posed a dilemma: Embrace the connection, or stay quiet? International courses in Dubai and Indonesia also kept quiet, as did the US courses in Los Angeles County and Hudson Valley, New York. But his victory does put a spotlight back on Trump's business empire, where companies could use the connections as a selling point or try to function like a business without a famous owner. Reuters estimated earlier this year that Trump's golf and resort business is the biggest driver of the Trump Organization's cash flow.

Former President Donald Trump arrives for his campaign rally at the Trump National Doral Golf Club in Doral, Florida, on July 9, 2024. Getting that money required him to make big promises pertaining to the crypto industry. "For too long our government has violated the cardinal rule that every bitcoiner knows by heart: Never sell your bitcoin," Trump said during his keynote speech. Trump pledged to maintain the current level of bitcoin holdings that the U.S. has amassed from seizing assets from financial criminals. "On day one, I will fire Gary Gensler," Trump said, referencing the Joe Biden-appointed SEC chairman who has taken an aggressive approach to crypto regulation.

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Town hall test: The CNN town hall in Delaware County outside Philadelphia comes at a critical point in the presidential race with 13 days until Election Day, more than 20 million votes already cast and Harris locked in an exceedingly close race with her Republican rival. The event falls on the same night as a proposed CNN debate between the two candidates that Harris accepted but Trump turned down. Sounding the alarm: The vice president is not alone in sounding the alarm about the potential danger of a second Trump presidency. Harris participated in a pair of television interviews Tuesday, a day after holding separate campaign events in each of the Blue Wall states.

Donald Trump overcharged Secret Service agents protecting him and his family for rooms at his hotel in Washington while he was president, a new report from House Democrats alleges. The report points specifically to Nov. 28, 2017, when the Secret Service paid $600 apiece for several rooms for agents guarding Trump’s son Eric and his wife, Lara. On the same night, records show, more than 80 rooms were rented out at the Trump hotel at less than $600 a night. Craft booked rooms at the Trump hotel on 20 nights over the 11-month period, spending close to $30,000. But emails the committee obtained from the State Department show she insisted she stay at the Trump hotel.

In the end, on Wednesday, both Harris and Fox News probably got what they wanted. But before the interview, Harris spokesman Ian Sams explained her thinking. If only a few thousand Fox viewers or traditional conservatives swapped sides, it could push some swing states in the vice president’s direction. Still, the risk for Harris is that her display in her first formal Fox interview could alienate some of those voters. It’s taken her several months to arrive at the assurance that she’d strike a strong contrast with Biden’s administration, which she unveiled in the Fox interview.

New research identifies the 10 best-performing US stocks since 1926. Of 29,000 US stocks traded since 1926, most had negative returns, but top performers showed consistent gains. Of course, identifying the 10 best-performing stocks for the next 100 years is nearly impossible, as the paper's author points out. "The majority (51.6%) of these stocks had negative cumulative returns," finance professor Hendrik Bessembinder of Arizona State University wrote. Bessembinder also observed that the 10 best-performing stocks delivered consistently modest annualized gains, reinforcing the slow and steady mantra championed by long-term investors.

Middletown, Ohio CNN —Minutes into his first solo event as Donald Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance had already divided his hometown audience here – over donuts. Former US President Donald Trump during a campaign event at Trump National Doral Golf Club in Miami, Florida, US, on Tuesday, July 9, 2024. "Trump's re-election would thus pose a significant downside risk to our otherwise constructive growth forecast for the Euro area." Trade policy uncertainty, added defense and security pressures and spillover effects from U.S. domestic policies on, for example, taxes could impact Europe, they explained. Trade tensionsTrump's trade policy, and the uncertainty around it, could be one factor that impacts Europe's economy, just as it did during his last presidency, analysts Stehn and Moberly said. In 2018 and 2019, uncertainty about trade policy reduced industrial production in the euro area by around 2%, they estimated.

Trump Rejoices at How the Landscape Has Changed

A mini-motorcade of golf carts cruised down the palm tree-lined pathway. Mr. Trump had not been seen in days, and now there he was on Tuesday night, standing on a stage that had been erected near the golf course’s 10th hole. Oh, how much the landscape had changed, and in such a short time. The word “landslide” is now credibly being mentioned about Mr. Trump for the first time in his political career. Earlier on Tuesday, the nonpartisan election forecaster Cook Political Report slid six states in his direction.

After talking about his proposal to remove taxes on tips for hospitality workers, he urged Mr. Rubio to vote for it. Mr. Rubio had so far this year appeared infrequently on the campaign trail with Mr. Trump.
