AdvertisementI waited for seven hours to try Franklin Barbecue, considered the best barbecue in Texas by many. One of the most famous places to get it is Franklin Barbecue in Austin, where people wait in line for hours to order. Established in 2009, Franklin Barbecue has made quite a name for itself in the past few years. It's regularly recommended in Michelin Guides, and publications from Texas Monthly to Bon Appetit have listed it among the best barbecue in Texas (and even the country). The long wait was worth itThe food and experience made the wait worth it.

It is 1985 and the heavyweight is about to make his professional boxing debut. For many families, child care is often the biggest. Thanks to a state program launched during the recovery from the pandemic, they pay nothing for child care. Vice President Kamala Harris proposes capping child care costs at 7% of working families’ incomes, along with an up-to-$6,000 expanded child tax credit for those with newborns. The permanent fund now funnels more than $150 million from fossil fuel producers into child care subsidies, state officials estimate. As elder care costs continue to outpace inflation, the Democratic ticket sees that constituency as key to victory.

How to strike a hostage and ceasefire deal, and with whom, is now a matter of uncertainty for American officials, who spent the hours after Sinwar’s death trying to determine if he had a successor. But US officials stopped short of saying Thursday that his death will result in a deal overnight. For long stretches, American officials couldn’t even say definitively whether he was alive or dead. “By all accounts, Sinwar has been the biggest obstacle within Hamas to a ceasefire-hostage release deal in Gaza. Depending on who would take his place, Sinwar’s death could revive hope for an agreement to end the war.

The timeline and parameters of Israel’s retaliation against Iran have been subject to intense debate inside Israel’s government and are not directly related to the timing of the US election, the sources said. President Joe Biden, and by extension Vice President Kamala Harris, have faced pressure from progressives for their handling of the situation. In a telephone conversation last week, Biden and Netanyahu held a “direct” conversation about the plans for responding to Iran, according to the White House. American officials were extraordinarily tight-tipped about the two leaders’ conversation. “The Supreme Court has a limited role to play death penalty cases,” said Paul Cassell, a University of Utah law professor who is representing a victim’s family in another death penalty case before the high court this year. Another involves an Alabama man who claims he is intellectually disabled and therefore ineligible for execution under Supreme Court precedent. The Supreme Court’s approach to death penalty appeals is “to correct severe misapplications of constitutional law by America’s state court systems,” said Seth Kretzer, a Texas attorney who has represented death row inmates at the Supreme Court. Alabama is appealing that decision to the Supreme Court and has been waiting more than year for an answer. The international poverty line, which the U.N. uses to measure global poverty, is very low. The international poverty line is valuable because it has succeeded in drawing the world’s attention to the extreme poverty of the world’s very poorest people. But to end poverty in all its forms everywhere, studying this poverty line alone is not enough. One way to see whether this higher poverty line is reasonable is to check whether it aligns with established national poverty assessments. For this, we need an appropriately ambitious poverty line that receives the same attention as the low international poverty line.

While school meal prices vary throughout the country, a survey conducted by the School Nutrition Association, a trade organization, found that lunches typically cost about $2.83 for elementary school students, $3 for middle school students and $3.05 for high school students. The prices mean that the $100 million in transaction fees could have bought another 33 million or so school lunches or over 55 million school breakfasts. “Junk fees on school lunch should not exist. A handful of states have made universal school meals permanent, but most have returned to the pre-pandemic format. “School lunch should always be free, and definitely free of judgment,” Fetterman said at the hearing on Wednesday.

Long Covid continues to evade a clear diagnostic test, researchers reported in a study published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine. They found no differences between those with long Covid and those without the condition. Different symptoms were assigned different scores, and a long Covid diagnosis was met if the score reached a level of 12. There was no time cutoff for symptoms and a positive Covid test was not required for diagnosis. Dr. Nisha Viswanathan, the director of the long Covid clinic at UCLA Health, was not surprised with the results based on her experience working with long Covid patients for three years.

There are other reasons the dollar has been propelled higher as some European and Asian currencies have seen lackluster growth. A strong dollar makes US exports more expensive and reduces the profits of American companies operating overseas when earnings are converted back to dollars. When a family member who has been fairly responsible with money all their lives becomes careless with their finances, it may be one sign of as-yet-undiagnosed dementia. “The harmful financial effects of undiagnosed memory disorders exacerbate the already substantial financial pressure households face upon diagnosis,” the researchers wrote.
