Angel Mitchell was in knots Friday morning at the eastern Tennessee hospital where her 83-year-old mother had been admitted days earlier for pneumonia. People evacuate Unicoi County Hospital due to unusually high and rising water from the Nolichucky River. Mitchell said her mother was fastened to a gurney and hoisted up, then taken to another hospital. During that last hour, a panic attack set in as she thought about her mother. Mitchell said she's grateful everyone at the hospital survived, but on Monday, her mother received another devastating diagnosis — that she has colon cancer.

With little time to prepare, Tampa General Hospital began erecting a 10-foot-high flood barrier around the facility Monday because of the chance for storm surge and shifts in the storm’s track. A tropical storm watch was raised Monday afternoon for Florida’s Dry Tortugas and part of the Keys and Monday evening for Bonita Beach to Flamingo, where a storm surge watch is also in effect. Strong, potentially damaging winds and storm surge are likely near where the system ultimately comes ashore. Hurricane and tropical storm watches are already in effect for parts of Mexico and Cuba. The “storm surge, wind, and rainfall impacts will extend well away from the center, particularly to the east of the system.

CNN —The dappled starlight and swirling clouds of Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” are thought to reflect the artist’s tumultuous state of mind when he painted the work in 1889. Now, a new analysis by physicists based in China and France suggests the artist had a deep, intuitive understanding of the mathematical structure of turbulent flow. Batchelor’s scaling mathematically represents how small particles, such as drifting algae in the ocean or pieces of dust in the wind, are passively mixed around by turbulent flow. “I think this physical relationship must be embedded in his mind so that’s why when he made this famous ‘Starry Night’ painting, it mimics the real flow,” Huang said. “What I take away from studies like this is that (van Gogh) captured some of this universality in the beautiful (‘Starry Night’),” Beattie added.

The El Niño of 252 million years ago would have originated in the Panthalassic Ocean, a body of water much larger than today’s Pacific that could hold more heat, which in turn would have strengthened and sustained El Niño effects. The planet had experienced similar episodes earlier but they hadn’t triggered a mass extinction. A prolonged and intense El Niño also explained why extinctions had begun on land before they occurred in the ocean, the study said. This data showed how temperature rose at different latitudes as the mass extinction unfolded. El Niño events today are known to cause coral bleaching and mass mortality of fish, the study noted, but the ecological impact and future trajectory of El Niño events in a warming climate are unknown.
