AdvertisementIn a podcast appearance, Jon Stewart dismissed the idea that Democrats need their own Joe Rogan. Rogan, Stewart said, talks to everyone with curiosity, which Stewart suggested Dems need more of. Jon Stewart seems to think the idea that Democrats need their own Joe Rogan-type media personality to balance the podcast giant's support for President-elect Donald Trump is laughable. In a Thursday appearance on his "The Weekly Show" podcast, Stewart chuckled at a listener's question — relayed to him by his producer, Brittany Mehmedovic — about who the democrat version of Joe Rogan could be. During Trump’s first term, for example, he was blocked by the Senate from using recess appointments to replace then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Florida Sen. Rick Scott on Sunday quickly posted on X endorsing Trump’s post : “100% agree. The question of recess appointments will now throw a major wrench in the Senate GOP’s leadership election when senators return to Washington this week. Recess appointments were once controversial, last-ditch efforts for presidents to install their nominees after facing long confirmation odds in the Senate. When senators left town, the Senate held a “pro forma” session to prevent any recess appointments.

In today’s edition, national political reporter Ben Kamisar breaks down our latest NBC News Deciders Focus Group, which featured voters who supported Nikki Haley in the Republican presidential primary. Uncomfortable Haley voters weigh their options with Election Day loomingBy Ben KamisarKamala Harris’ deployment of prominent Republican critics of Donald Trump hasn’t convinced a new focus group of voters who backed Nikki Haley in the GOP presidential primary. Such was the reaction among the 11 focus group participants in a new NBC News Deciders Focus Group conducted Monday evening, produced in collaboration with Syracuse University and the research firms Engagious and Sago. “Most of the voters we heard from have known for months which camp they’re in,” she continued. Four of these 11 voters plan to vote for Trump or are leaning that way, with another choosing between Trump and a write-in or third party.

From 2008 through 2020, the winning candidate either swept or nearly swept the final six to eight battleground states. Are we still under-sampling Trump voters? Then again, is Trump’s improvement in the polls this cycle an indication the polling community finally got it right on the Trump vote? In 2020, the Trump campaign was the only one knocking on doors during Covid, as the Biden campaign feared scaring its supporters at the doors. The Harris campaign appears invested in doing traditional get-out-the-vote programs in all sorts of places.

Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris face off in the ABC presidential debate on Sept. 10, 2024. The previous Trump administration didn't pursue those types of consumer protections. In contrast, Democrats, including Harris, have historically supported EVs and incentives such as those under the Biden administration's signature Inflation Reduction Act. Meanwhile, Harris, if elected, can build on existing efforts of the Biden administration to deliver savings to more patients, they said. Trump also led multiple efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, including its expansion of Medicaid to low-income adults.

PHILADELPHIA — Former President Donald Trump found out Tuesday night that he's got a much tougher rival on his hands now. Harris, eager to portray herself as different from both Trump and Biden, reminded him that Biden won't be on the ballot. Trump said Harris has had 3½ years to make the changes she promises to make and argued the Biden-Harris administration squandered progress Trump gave them. Trump and Harris also clashed over the 2020 election, with Trump again falsely claiming that he won. Throughout the debate, Harris needled Trump in ways that undermined his self-image as a popular, strong leader whom American’s adversaries fear.

To the Editor:Re “The Election Is Crucial to the Future of the Supreme Court,” by Erwin Chemerinsky (Opinion guest essay, July 31):Regarding this essay supporting President Biden’s effort to reform the Supreme Court, as well as the current Democratic push in this same direction, does anyone seriously believe that this would be an issue at all if the Democrats were satisfied with the Supreme Court decisions? The only reason it is an issue is that they don’t like the recent results from that court, and that is the very reason that Supreme Court reform is a bad idea: It is 100 percent politically motivated. The movement would have a lot more credibility if it wasn’t arising immediately on the heels of recent Supreme Court decisions that the Democrats don’t like, such as expanding the scope of presidential immunity, overturning the Chevron doctrine and especially overturning Roe v. Wade. Peter E. MeltzerWynnewood, Pa.To the Editor:While I often agree with Erwin Chemerinsky, I differ here on two important points.

It’s baffling that so many Democrats are failing to rally around a wildly successful president after one bad night. But it does remind me of why Republicans defeated Democrats in so many races Republicans should have lost. The Republican Party lost its mind and decided that this one victory negated everything we know about politics. One debate does not change the structure of this presidential campaign. For all the talk of Mr. Biden’s off night, what is lost is that Mr. Trump missed a great opportunity to reset his candidacy and greatly strengthen his position.

One of the field’s top fund-raisers, Krystle Kaul, faces charges of embellishing her résumé well beyond the usual flourishes of a political campaign. Ms. Filler-Corn was the first woman and first Jewish speaker of the Virginia State House. Read previewThe prominence of school vouchers continues to surge across the country — but they might not benefit the families who need them the most. Over the past few years, states like Ohio and Arkansas have expanded their school voucher programs to allow most or all parents to receive funding to send their kids to private schools. The modern school voucher movement started to grow in the 1990s under the idea that the government would give parents a certain amount of money to put toward private school tuition. A new report from the Brookings Institution delved further into the implications of Arizona's voucher program. Nikki Haley lost the New Hampshire primary but found a cause: getting under Donald Trump’s not exactly rhinoceros-thick skin. Haley’s turn toward mockery and confrontation has created modest excitement in the disillusioned world of NeverTrump punditry. (AP) — The Louisiana Legislature has until Jan. 15 to enact a new congressional map after a lower court last year ruled that the current political boundaries dilute the power of the state’s Black voters, a federal New Orleans appeals court said Friday. Louisiana is among states still wrangling over congressional districts after the U.S. Supreme Court in June ruled that Alabama had violated the Voting Rights Act. They argue that Black populations in the state are too dispersed to be united into a second majority Black district. Lawmakers now have until mid-January to draw and pass a new map, which would have to be done through a special session. However, in the appeals court’s order it does say that the district court will have discretion to grant “limited additional time” if requested.

On Tuesday, Virginia voters will decide who will control the state legislature, which is currently divided between Republicans and Democrats each controlling one chamber. Outlawing abortion at 15 weeks or earlier would mean residents of southern states seeking the procedure after this point would be funneled into clinics in states even further away. Bans or restrictions in all the southern states would also mean denying or restricting access to more than 110 million Americans, or one third of the entire country’s population, and seven of the 10 fastest-growing cities. CNN defines southern states here as the states that seceded during the Civil War, which while a popular definition is not how the US Census defines the South. Democrats, who previously controlled both the legislature and governorship, were left with a 22-17 majority in the State Senate.

RALEIGH, N.C. The state House and Senate want to enact a final plan by the end of the month. It is extremely rare for a vice president to run against a president he served under, and it has happened just a handful of times in U.S. history. But Pence incurred the wrath of Trump and his supporters when, as ceremonial president of the Senate, he refused to stop the certification of Biden's victory over Trump in the 2020 election. Trump supporters stormed the Capitol during the certification process on Jan. 6, 2021, forcing Pence, lawmakers and staff to flee to safety. Representatives for Trump's campaign could not be immediately reached for comment on Wednesday. Many of Trump's diehard supporters view Pence's refusal to overturn the election result as treachery, potentially complicating his path to the nomination.

"That combination of overclassification and then too many people having clearances has led us to this problem," Warner told a news conference. He said more than 4 million people in the United States now have security clearance. Attorney General Merrick Garland has also appointed special counsels to investigate the handling of classified records by Republican former President Donald Trump and the handling of classified records from his time as vice president by current Democratic President Joe Biden. The path forward for the bills was not immediately clear but the senators said they hoped the recent attention on the clearance issue would help. "This is a piece of legislation that can become law and it is desperately needed for that to happen," Moran said.
In 2024, Sinema would likely need support from conservative voters who doubt the 2020 election. "Well, we're currently living in a climate where it's okay to say things that aren't true," Sinema said. "What I think we're facing in our country today is this situation where people don't know what's true and what's not true," said Sinema. Sinema again blamed "the two political parties" for becoming "more extreme." Lake says she's "seriously considering" a Senate campaign, and Sheriff Mark Lamb, already running in the GOP primary, has also cast doubt on the validity of the 2020 election.
