London CNN —The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla held in May last year cost British taxpayers £72 million ($91 million), an amount some have labeled excessive. The £72 million spent on the coronation could have paid for 24 million free meals for schoolchildren in London, based on the city government’s current budget of £3.00 ($3.75) per meal. Some additional spending came from the Privy Purse, the monarch’s private source of income, a royal source told CNN. “Plans (for the coronation) were scaled back,” the royal source told CNN. The culture department, in its accounts, said it had underspent its budget on the coronation by £2.8 million ($3.5 million).

Norway's royal family found itself embroiled in an intensifying scandal Tuesday after the son of the country's crown princess was arrested on suspicion of rape. They add to the growing list of charges against the Oslo socialite, the eldest child of Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a relationship prior to her marriage to Crown Prince Haakon. It was the police who brought the provisional rape charge, not the alleged victim, her lawyer Hege Salomon told Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten. And Borg Hoiby has pleaded not-guilty to separate charges related to two past relationships. CNN —An American silver coin dating back to the 17th century, before the United States was founded, has sold for a record-breaking $2.52 million at auction, eight years after it was discovered in an old cabinet in Amsterdam. The threepence coin was struck in 1652 in Boston just weeks after the first mint in the then-British colony had opened, according to a statement released Monday by Stack’s Bowers Galleries, which handled the sale. This was a threepence coin, as shown by the Roman numerals on one side of it. A rare 1794 silver dollar believed to be one of the first – if not the first – made by the US mint sold for $10 million in 2013. Meanwhile, a rare 1933 “Double Eagle” coin, one of the last gold coins ever struck for circulation in the US, sold for $18.9 million in 2021.
