In fact, traders boosted their bets that the U.S. Federal Reserve will lower rates by 25 basis points at its December meeting. "Today's data shouldn't change views of the likely path for disinflation, however bumpy," said David Alcaly, lead macroeconomic strategist at Lazard Asset Management.

CNN —The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) is seeking an arrest warrant for Myanmar’s military leader for crimes committed against the persecuted Rohingya minority group. As a result of the violence, the ICC estimated that more than one million Rohingya were forcibly displaced from Myanmar — many fleeing to neighboring Bangladesh. Min Aung Hlaing is the leader of Myanmar’s powerful military, known as the Tatmadaw, which seized power in 2021. But even If the warrant is approved, the ICC could be limited in its jurisdiction as Myanmar is not among the 123 member states of the court. However, member countries could be obligated to transfer Min Aung Hlaing into ICC custody if he enters their territory after the warrant is issued.

That means buyers can combine existing tax credits with the deep discounts on offer over the next three months. Hours after Newsom announced his proposal Monday, Bloomberg News reported that his office planned to exclude Teslas from any state rebate program, citing an idea to limit the proposed aid based on automakers’ EV market shares. The current federal tax credit also applies to leases, and some dealerships are exploiting a loophole that allows EV lessees to qualify for the full $7,500 credit without meeting income or manufacturer requirements. In a recent Edmunds analysis of mid-priced vehicles leased this year, the average monthly payment for EVs when factoring in tax credits was $428, far lower than the $572 for vehicles with gas engines. “If the tax credit goes away and it’s a significant amount that’s being utilized by dealers, you’ll have them rather upset for a while,” Drury said.

Federal Reserve officials expressed confidence that inflation is easing and the labor market is strong, allowing for further interest rate cuts albeit at a gradual pace, according to minutes from the November meeting released Tuesday. In addition, they expressed uncertainty over where the rate cuts would need to stop before the Fed hit a "neutral" interest rate that neither boosts nor restrains growth. Conflicting signals on inflation and the uncertainty over Trump's policies have caused traders to scale back their outlook for interest rate cuts ahead. Officials indicated that the state of the labor market is generally solid. "Participants generally noted … that there was no sign of rapid deterioration in labor market conditions, with layoffs remaining low," the minutes said.

Yet the energy sector climbed 22.9% under Biden as of Nov. 19, despite the administration's push for renewables and sustainability. As president, Trump is expected to embrace crypto more than any of his predecessors. When Biden won in 2020, there was a lot of panic about the outlook for energy, oil and gas.

At a time when most Federal Reserve officials see lower interest rates head, a key report on Wednesday is expected to show inflation drifting further away from target. The Commerce Department will release the October look at its personal consumption expenditures price index, the Fed's primary yardstick to measure the pace of price increases. "Recent data show progress on inflation has slowed," Brett Ryan, senior U.S. economist at Deutsche Bank, said in a note. "Recent wage data shows gains remain elevated and suggests core inflation is unlikely to cool near the Fed's 2% target," BlackRock experts said Monday in their weekly market note. "Markets have been pricing out Fed rate cuts — and moving closer to our view — as it becomes clearer that inflation pressures could prove persistent."

Scott Bessent, founder and chief executive officer of Key Square Group LP, during an interview in Washington, D.C., June 7, 2024. The U.S. stock market appeared to cheer President-elect Donald Trump's presumptive nominee for Treasury secretary, who told CNBC earlier in November that he sees an era of strong growth and lower inflation ahead. Stock market futures rose and Treasury yields tumbled early Monday following the announcement late Friday that Trump would pick Scott Bessent, a familiar Wall Street figure, to take on his administration's most important economic role. The move sent a message that Trump wants someone with strong market credentials as well as a similar philosophy for the role. In particular, bond yields have scaled higher, with some interpreting the move as anticipating another leg up for inflation while others see it as traders pricing in stronger growth.

With uncertainty lingering over how President-elect Donald Trump's policy intentions could affect vital parts of the economy, December no longer looks like a done deal for an interest rate cut. Primarily, it was Trump's victory and the extent to which his policies will stimulate the economy and perhaps goose inflation. In a recent CNBC interview, Bessent advocated for a gradual implementation of tariffs and insisted that Trump has no desire to stoke inflation. A market rally Monday lost a little bit of its steam as well as investors continued to weigh the prospects for Fed policy. "It is really, really hard to argue the other side of tariffs will slow growth and raise inflation.

She was elected in 2011 to her first political position – Florida attorney general – and was the first woman to hold that office. “Knowing her as a trial attorney and the attorney general,” Colton told CNN, “I feel that she would be very qualified for this job.”Dave Aronberg, a Palm Beach County state attorney who worked for Bondi when she was attorney general in Florida, told CNN that while Bondi will carry out Trump policies loyally, she is likely to treat Justice Department employees fairly. And for Trump’s opponents, Aronberg said not to expect a better pick for attorney general. “Pam Bondi is the best attorney general that Donald Trump is going to nominate,” Aronberg said. Since leaving the Florida attorney general post in 2019, Bondi has worked Ballard Partners, a lobbying firm with deep ties to Trump and his incoming chief of staff Susie Wiles.

Now, however, a growing number of gallerists and curators are, like Biljani, taking the opposite approach, exhibiting in the very places where daily life dominates: their own homes. In Manhattan’s Financial District, the dealer Michael Bargo, 41, sells rare furniture out of his one-bedroom apartment. In Los Angeles’s Frogtown, the collector Jonathan Pessin, 54, has converted his residence into a veritable bazaar of vintage design objects. And on New York’s Lower East Side, the pro skater turned artist and gallerist Tony Cox, 49, runs Club Rhubarb — a tiny, deliberately hard-to-find contemporary art gallery — out of his sixth-floor abode. But now, whether driven by skyrocketing rents, a collective urge to experiment or a longing to encourage active participation with the art, the concept is taking hold.

President-elect Donald Trump signaled Friday his intention to nominate hedge fund executive Scott Bessent as his Treasury secretary, in a move that puts a seasoned market pro and a close Trump loyalist in a critical economic position. As head of Treasury, Bessent, 62, will be both the U.S. fiscal watchdog as well as a key official to help Trump enact his ambitious economic agenda. Like Trump, Bessent favors gradual tariffs and deregulation to push American business and control inflation. The Treasury secretary is the lynchpin for the White House economic agenda. Others close to the president-elect think Bessent has not been rigorous enough in his support for tariffs, though Warsh also has made public statements against the levies.

The interest rate outlook will come back into focus next week with key inflation data and Federal Reserve meeting minutes coming out ahead of Thanksgiving, as investors wrap up a major month for markets following President-elect Donald Trump's election victory. The October personal consumption expenditure (PCE) price index set to release Wednesday could dent already-dimming hopes for a December rate cut if it comes in hotter than expected. The inflation rate is expected to have increased 0.2% month over month and 2.3% year on year. Rosy expectations Even with the interest rate cut expectations coming in, investors are optimistic on the direction for stocks to close out the year and into 2025. Goldman Sachs' David Kostin this week said he expects the S & P 500 can end next year at 6,500.

President-elect Donald Trump is considering naming Kevin Warsh as Treasury secretary then ultimately sending him off to serve as Federal Reserve chair, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The speculation comes with Treasury being the last major Cabinet position for which Trump has yet to state his intention. Among the potential scenarios would be one where Bessent would lead the National Economic Council initially then go over to Treasury after Warsh takes over at the Fed. However, Trump is known for the propensity to change his mind, and the report noted that nothing has been finalized. Read the full Wall Street Journal story here.

President-elect Donald Trump and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell could be on a policy collision course in 2025 depending on how economic circumstances play out. That in turn could infuriate Trump, who lashed Fed officials including Powell during his first term in office for not relaxing monetary policy quickly enough. Though Powell became Fed chair in 2018, after Trump nominated him for the position, the two clashed often about the direction of interest rates. Should the results start to show up in the data, the Powell Fed may be tempted to hold tougher on monetary policy against inflation. "They're going to look at a very nontraditional approach to policy that Trump is bringing forward but put it through a very traditional economic lens," he said.

President-elect Donald Trump's flurry of announcements regarding Cabinet nominees has left investors with one unexpected headache: a suddenly cloudy picture of who will take the all-important position of Treasury secretary. One somewhat new name to emerge into the Treasury conversation is former Fed governor Kevin Warsh. However, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that Warsh also has emerged as potential Treasury contender. Yields took another leg higher on Monday amid the Treasury uncertainty. However, Fundstrat research chief Tom Lee said that once the Treasury nominee issue is settled, that should restore some market confidence.

Known as the “dancing mouse” due to its slippery movements in that final, fatal fight with the Imperial Japanese Navy, the destroyer USS Edsall went down off the coast of Australia in 1942, under the command of Lt. Joshua Nix. Speaking alongside Kennedy, Australia’s chief of navy, Vice Adm. Mark Hammond, said the wreck was found with the help of advanced hydrographic survey capabilities aboard naval support ship MV Stoker. “Nix’s position was hopeless from the moment Edsall was sighted,” Cox wrote. At least one hit Edsall, and the ship began to lose its ability to maneuver. The discovery highlighted the current AUKUS partnership, between the US, Australia and the United Kingdom, she said.
