Shoppers are heading into the Black Friday weekend unsure how wide to open their wallets, retailers say, with many still feeling the squeeze of inflation and also worried that tariffs could make things even more expensive if they wait too long to buy. Black Friday marks the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season, a make-or-break period for many retailers. Recent data suggests that consumer spending, the engine of the U.S. economy, remains relatively robust. But reports from retailers hint at diverging fortunes, as shoppers have grown pickier about what they buy and where they buy it. An executive at Target described consumers as shifting from “resilient” to “resourceful.” A leader at Walmart said shoppers “seek value to maximize their budgets.”These spending patterns are creating winners and losers in corporate America, perhaps most starkly illustrated by Walmart and Target.

5 big questions about how tech will look under Trump

He sought to swat down legal protections for tech platforms. Many Republicans are eager to see the Trump administration address what they see as “censorship” of right-leaning voices by many mainstream social media platforms. That could mean reforming or reinterpreting Section 230, which shields tech platforms from liability for their users’ posts and allows the platforms to moderate content as they see fit. In essence, Carr could attempt to pass a rule that would make it possible to sue tech platforms under that new interpretation. Ultimately, that could mean hamstringing tech companies’ efforts to reduce hateful or false content on their platforms.

AdvertisementNouriel Roubini thinks higher inflation and slower growth are coming on the back of Trump's policies. "Some of the economic policies may lead to higher economic growth," Roubini said, pointing to Trump's push to loosen regulation and slash the corporate tax rate. "But unfortunately, many of the other policies have the implication of higher inflation and lower economic growth." AdvertisementOther forecasters have also warned of the potential for higher inflation in Trump's second term. Trump, though, has repeatedly disputed the idea that his policies are inflationary and said he would lower prices for Americans.

But if Mr. Kennedy is confirmed to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, several of his key priorities may run counter to those of an administration with a game plan bent on deregulation. Mr. Trump’s choice for White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, comes from a lobbying firm that represented the very industries that Mr. Kennedy hopes to disrupt. When it comes to tearing down corporate capture among the giants — Big Pharma, Big Ag, Big Food, among others — Mr. Kennedy’s ideas echo those of some of the incoming Trump administration’s loudest critics. Michelle ObamaMr. Kennedy, who recently criticized Mr. Trump’s penchant for fast food, has been clear about his plans to go after ultra-processed foods that contribute to the growing rates of diabetes and obesity in the United States. President-elect Donald Trump has called for cutting the corporate tax rate – and a slate of companies could stand to benefit, according to an analysis from Wolfe Research. That would be a reduction from the current corporate tax rate of 21%. A corporate tax rate of 18% would increase S & P 500 earnings per share by $5, while a 15% rate would lift earnings per share by $10, he said. Senyek's team identified companies that could see the greatest impact on their earnings per share from a lower tax rate. Wolfe also highlighted Amazon in its list of companies that could benefit from a lower corporate tax rate.
