But cargo container trade data reviewed by CNBC tells a more nuanced tale. "We took some action to move product ahead of the port strike which came with more cost," Fiddelke said. Target's peak season imports for 2024 compared to 2023 were flat to down, according to cargo container volumes data pulled and analyzed by ImportGenius. According to customs data aggregated by Panjiva, Walmart imported 25,000 shipments from May 31-August 31, valued at $1.3 billion. Target reported earnings Wednesday that came in far below Wall Street's expectations, something the big-box retailer attributed to slower-than-expected demand. The company announced profits that missed forecasts by 20%, its widest miss in two years. Broader stock trading did not immediately react, however, as Wall Street awaits earnings from chipmaker Nvidia, which has helped power the market higher throughout the year. Target's report comes a day after rival Walmart reported earnings and revenues that beat expectations. “We’re expecting this holiday period to be very consistent with that,” Walmart Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey told CNBC.

The big-box retailer reversed course and cut its full-year profit guidance, just three months after hiking that forecast. That's lower than the $9 to $9.70 per share range that it shared in August and below the $9.55 a share expected by analysts, according to StreetAccount. That metric, which is also known as same-store sales, includes sales on its website and stores open at least 13 months. The company fell short of Wall Street's earnings per share estimate by 20%, its biggest miss in two years. Target eked out a comparable sales gain of 0.3%, as shoppers spent more on its website but less at its stores.

Customer traffic gains were similar at the two stores, yet Walmart's sales trends looked much better than Target's. Walmart's traffic growth edged out its rival's, with a gain of 3.1% at Walmart U.S. versus 2.4% at Target. Walmart's e-commerce sales in the U.S. rose 22%, a bigger increase than the nearly 11% at Target. About 60% of Target's sales come from discretionary items, such as home goods and clothing. On a call with investors on Wednesday, Cornell pointed to "green shoots" in the business, even as sales results disappointed.

Chief Commercial Officer Rick Gomez provided additional detail about how this new consumer pattern has played out for the company. On Wednesday, his sentence was handed down by Judge Ronnie Abrams in federal court in Manhattan. Dr. Paduch, of North Bergen, N.J., was arrested last April. During appointments, the indictment said, Dr. Paduch told patients to masturbate in front of him, sometimes groping them or showing them pornography. During the course of the trial, 11 victims testified about abuse they had suffered under Dr. Paduch’s care, and dozens more wrote impact statements before he was sentenced Wednesday. Mallory Allen, a lawyer for a firm that represents 140 former patients who have filed civil suits against him, said in a statement that the sentence affirms that “heinous sexual abuse will not be overlooked.”

The vast networks of data cables that crisscross our world's oceans are crucial for almost every aspect of modern life. Related Video Ukraine's sea drones vs. Russia's Black Sea FleetDespite their importance, events this week have highlighted just how vulnerable the West's internet subsea cables are to attacks from hostile powers. Unlike Russia, whose internet cables mostly run overland, the cables Western countries rely on are deep under the sea — and it's an asymmetrical vulnerability Russia is signaling it could exploit. AdvertisementIn response to the threat, Western countries are trying to better protect existing cable networks or route data through satellites if they are disrupted. In the CSIS report in August, Murphy and other analysts called for the US to strengthen international coordination and enhance resources to protect existing undersea cable networks.

AdvertisementAs America's grocery king, Walmart sources a high share of its products from the US. The difference puts more of Target's business at risk of being impacted if Trump follows through on his tariff promises. "Target is actually much more exposed than Walmart because Walmart is grocery-heavy and groceries are predominantly domestic," Jason Miller, supply chain professor at Michigan State University, told Business Insider. Food and beverage sales accounted for less than a quarter of Target's sales last year. In April, President Joe Biden signed a law that requires China’s ByteDance to sell TikTok by Jan. 19. Although both Republicans and Democrats supported the Biden TikTok ban in April, Trump voiced opposition to the ban during his candidacy. In his March interview with “Squawk Box,” Trump said Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, posed a much bigger problem than TikTok. As he has done several times before, Einhorn pointed a finger at passive, index investors: "The passive people, they don't care what the value is." "I view the markets as fundamentally broken," Einhorn said back in February on Barry Ritholtz's "Masters in Business" podcast. "You have these companies, and all they do is they manage these expectations, right?," Einhorn told Picker. This is causing great pain to value investors like Einhorn, many of whom have seen cash flee their funds. CNN —Ancient DNA has revealed surprises about the identities of some people who perished in the ancient Roman town of Pompeii after a volcanic eruption, overturning misconceptions about their genetic relationships, ancestry and sex. Ash and volcanic rock called pumice then covered Pompeii and its residents, preserving scenes of the victims of the city’s destruction like an eerie time capsule. While the Greeks, Etruscans and Samnites attempted to conquer it, Pompeii became a Roman colony, the study authors noted. In 2015, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii began efforts to restore 86 of the 104 casts originally made by Fiorelli. Together, park scientists and the study authors are working on a larger project to better understand the genetic diversity present in Pompeii during the Roman Empire.
