Operations at Three Mile Island are poised to restart in four years, the latest sign that the nuclear power industry is undergoing a major turnaround after a wave of plant closures. The Unit 1 reactor at Three Mile Island, which entered service in 1974, was permanently shut down in 2019 due to economic pressure as nuclear power struggled to compete against natural gas. But the tech sector's growing power needs are breathing new life into the industry. Constellation Energy plants to restart Unit 1 in 2028 through an agreement with Microsoft to help power the tech company's data centers. Here is a look at the plant's main control room, the turbine deck that houses the main power generator, and the facility's iconic cooling towers.

Technology companies' push to directly power artificial intelligence with nuclear plants hit a major roadblock, after a federal regulator rejected a request to increase power for an Amazon data center. Constellation Energy and Vistra Corp. tumbled nearly 8% and more than 3%, respectively, in sympathy. The Amazon data center campus can still use 300 megawatts of power from the Susquehanna nuclear plant, according to Talen. The FERC decision does not impact Constellation's plans to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in 2028 through a power purchase agreement with Microsoft . Tech companies are increasingly turning to nuclear power because it is reliable and does not emit carbon dioxide emissions.

Small modular reactors (SMRs) promise to reduce capital costs and accelerate construction timelines that typically plague nuclear plants, but the technology has struggled to reach the commercial stage. The difference now is the appetite of tech companies for fossil-free fuel. The market for SMRs could grow by two gigawatts to five gigawatts by 2035 assuming big tech companies make up a majority of the demand, Percoco said. The small, pure-play advanced reactor companies NuScale and Oklo are options, but their stocks are volatile and business outlook uncertain. Citi is warning that Constellation Energy could face execution risks in restarting the Three Mile Island nuclear plant , initiating coverage of the high-flying power stock with caution. But Citi analyst Ryan Levine warned that Constellation will likely face cost overruns and delays in restarting Three Mile Island. Every month that the project is delayed could shave 9 cents off Constellation's stock, according to Levine. Levine also warned that Constellation could face challenges inking deals to directly power data centers with its nuclear reactors, the largest such fleet in the country.
