“For us to get overly anxious about that, I think it's a silly prospect.”Boeing should focus on existing competition and position itself to "win that technology race," Calhoun said. Chinese airlines began returning the 737 MAX to service earlier this year. Although all Chinese users have restarted 737 flights, deliveries of the jet have been stalled amid friction between the United States and China. Spirit has been the source of several problems that have stalled Boeing deliveries in recent years, including an ongoing 737 MAX bracket installation flaw that slowed deliveries since it was discovered in April. “We are disappointed with every next issue that occurs that limits our rates and slows us down,” Calhoun said.

BEIJING, Jan 12 (Reuters) - China expects to reach annual production capacity of 150 domestically-produced C919 planes in five years, government-backed media The Paper said on Friday. Zhang Yujin, deputy general manager of China's state-owned Commercial Aviation Corp of China (COMAC), the maker of C919, said the company had received more than 1,200 orders for the jet. "The first orders are from China Eastern Airlines (600115.SS), and at present a number of carriers are vying for our orders," Zhang said, adding that there would be "qualitative change" in terms of C919's production capacity. COMAC delivered the first C919to China Eastern in December, and the maiden commercial flight is expected to take place in spring this year, according to state-owned Xinhua News Agency. The world’s first C919, a Chinese-made narrowbody jet, was delivered to launch customer China Eastern Airlines (CEA) in Shanghai on Friday and took off for a 15-minute flight to mark the historic moment. The plane, delivered to China Eastern, has 164 seats and was painted with “the world’s first C919” on its side in Chinese and English. China Eastern said Friday it plans to receive the remaining four of its first batch of C919 orders over the next two years, according to Shanghai’s The Paper, a state-owned newspaper. China’s narrowbody jet ambitions intensified over the last few years amid conflicts with the United States from trade to technology that made China increasingly concerned about being overly dependent on Airbus and Boeing. China is trying to raise the proportion of domestic parts in the C919 and an alternative engine called the CJ-1000A is under development.
