Comcast shares dropped more than 8% following Watson's remarks at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference on Monday. Cable broadband growth has been in the midst of an ongoing slump. He also noted that NBCUniversal's marketing of the Summer Olympics helped, too. NBCUniversal owns NBC Sports and NBC Olympics. NBC Olympics is the U.S. broadcast rights holder to all Summer and Winter Games through 2032.

On Jan. 13, NBCUniversal's subscription streaming service Peacock showed its first-ever exclusive NFL playoff game — a 26-7 victory by the eventual Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs over the Miami Dolphins. For NBCUniversal, obtaining NBA rights helps guarantee sustainability in a fight for eyeballs against streaming behemoths such as Netflix , Amazon Prime Video and Disney +. Beginning with the 2025-26 season, Peacock will have about 50 exclusive national regular-season and postseason NBA games, including national Monday night games and doubleheaders. Having exclusive NBA games is really important for that mission." Discovery decided not to compete with NBCUniversal for NBA rights once the price tag ballooned past $2 billion per year.

Bally Sports regional channels are returning to Comcast cable TV customers. Diamond Sports — the owner of Bally Sports-branded regional sports networks — reached a deal with Comcast on Monday that will see its networks go live for cable customers on Aug. 1. Pay TV companies such as Comcast have been bleeding customers in recent years as customers opt for cheaper streaming options. Comcast said last week it lost 419,000 domestic cable customers during the second quarter and now has roughly 13.2 million subscribers in total. Once a lucrative business, regional sports networks have been particularly squeezed by customers leaving the cable bundle.

Negotiations between Comcast and Bally Sports' operator Diamond Sports Group, which has been under bankruptcy protection since last year, broke down following a dispute over terms. Pay-TV distributors have been losing customers at a fast clip in recent years as customers opt for cheaper streaming options. Comcast had more than 13.6 million pay-TV customers as of March 31, after losing 487,000 subscribers during the first quarter. Some regional sports networks have begun offering streaming options to customers at a price point that doesn't upend the pay-TV model. In addition to Comcast, Diamond has held negotiations in recent weeks with Charter Communications — which provides pay-TV services under the Spectrum brand — DirecTV and Cox Communications.
