Mahomes vs. Allen, Round 8The NFL schedulers probably should have made this the Sunday night contest. The Bears rank seventh against the pass, have allowed only 18.6 points per game (seventh-best) and have 16 takeaways (also seventh). Foes do find it hard to run on Baltimore, which gives up an NFL-low 73.0 rushing yards per game. They are holding opponents to a league-best 13.1 points per game, and haven’t allowed more than 20 points in any game this season. So this matchup will be a good measuring stick for the Chargers’ defense, while proving whether Herbert and company can win in a shootout if necessary.

San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall scored his first NFL touchdown Sunday — just 10 weeks after being shot in the chest. Pearsall started Sunday’s game along with Samuel and Jennings, the first time that combination has been used this year. Pearsall’s touchdown also came on a deep crosser against zone coverage — the type of play Aiyuk made regularly last season when he led the 49ers in receiving yards.

Yet this season he is on pace to produce marks in passer rating, air yards per attempt, yards per passing attempt, quarterback rating, passing yards and interceptions that are better than in either of his previous MVP campaigns, in 2019 and 2023. Goff has been a model of efficiency, completing 74.1% of his passes while posting career bests in yards per attempt and passer rating. While other NFC contenders have struggled, Detroit looks arguably better than a season ago. By rushing for a league-leading 946 yards on 6.5 yards per carry — an incredible 1.1 yards more per rush than he averaged in that historic 2020 season — he’s taken pressure off of Jackson. That not only explains the play, but what Daniels has brought to a Commanders team that won’t go away.

CNN —San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall will be activated for the team’s Week 7 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, seven weeks after he was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery in San Francisco’s Union Square. He’s been around the guys for a while now, so it’s not like he hasn’t been around, but practicing all week,” Shanahan said. “He’s got roles on special teams, he’s got his role at receiver, and we’ll see how the game unfolds. San Francisco has been ravaged by injuries throughout the season, with star running back Christian McCaffrey still on injured reserve and yet to play this season. Week 2 of the NFL gave us some shocking upsets, an AFC thriller and some spectacular individual performances. That allowed the Chiefs to stay within a field goal — as did Cincinnati’s offensive struggles. After a Mahomes interception, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was strip-sacked, and the fumble was recovered for a score on the next possession. Is the Saints’ offense really this good? The Saints scored touchdowns on five straight possessions to open the game, sandwiching long drives around explosive plays.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers placed All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve because of his lingering calf and Achilles tendon injuries. The move made Saturday means McCaffrey will miss at least four more games after already sitting out the season opener. He missed only one game combined in 2022-23 — a meaningless Week 18 game last season for San Francisco when he had a sore calf. Now San Francisco will likely rely heavily on Mason, a former undrafted free agent out of Georgia Tech who had 83 carries his first two seasons. San Francisco also elevated safety Tracy Walker III from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against Minnesota.

The Saints, one week after blowing out the lowly Carolina Panthers, did the same in Dallas to the high-flying Cowboys. The Ravens were in control for most of the game and then Davante Adams and Brock Bowers took over. The Ravens aren’t built to win when their defense softens — but that isn’t to say they won’t find ways to play the kind of defense the Ravens are known for. Meanwhile, the Saints’ defense denied the Cowboys on all three trips inside the red zone and recorded two takeaways. He made some strong in-structure throws, including a beauty to Noah Brown in the middle of the field late in the game to win the game.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey has been ruled out of this weekend’s game for the San Francisco 49ers because of his lingering calf and Achilles’ injuries and could be headed to injured reserve. McCaffrey was held out of practice on Friday, a day after experiencing pain in practice. He was then ruled out of the game Sunday against Minnesota after expressing hope earlier in the week that he could play. Addison had seven catches for 123 yards and two TDs in a win against San Francisco last season. In other injury news for San Francisco, defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos is set to play after missing the opener with a knee injury.
