The rout seems to be accelerating, with those sales tumbling 14% in the second quarter, according to results published late Tuesday. “For now, the (luxury) market remains volatile as investors reassess the once-held belief that luxury brands are a safe-haven investment, shielded from broader economic downturns,” Jochen Stanzl, chief market analyst at CMC Markets, told CNN. “The Chinese market contracted slightly; the market situation in the premium and luxury segment in China remained weak,” the company said. China’s economy grew 4.7% year-on-year in the second quarter of the year, according to official data released last week, missing economists’ expectations and marking the weakest growth since the first quarter of 2023.

NEW YORK (AP) — The new documentary “High & Low — John Galliano” covers all the complexities of the famous British designer, one of the most celebrated and controversial figures in the fashion industry. The Associated Press talked to Macdonald about Galliano’s rise and fall and why many friends and fans stayed loyal to him. How do we really know why someone said something? AP: Do you think Galliano feels remorse about his past comments and behavior? It feels like, “OK, I’ve got that off my chest now, now I can ... do what I’m really, really good at and express myself more personally again.”

In the twenty-six years she lived after World War II, Coco Chanel never publicly apologized for her treacherous behavior during the Nazi Occupation of Paris. While living at the Ritz Hotel with a handsome German spy, she had tried to use the Nazi race laws to wrest control of her perfume company from her Jewish partners. She also had embarked on a Nazi-authorized scheme to broker a separate peace with Winston Churchill, and she was overheard making ugly, antisemitic remarks. But in converting Chanel’s experiences into a TV production “inspired by true events,” the show’s creators have mangled or lost much of the actual truth, which is more complicated than what’s portrayed onscreen.
