The US government tracks what percentage of each car’s parts is made “domestically.” But under current trade law, both Canadian-made parts and US-made parts are counted as the same domestic content. “Yes, it’s America’s truck, assembled in America, but not with American parts,” Ivan Drury, director of insights for Edmunds, told CNN. Domestic parts could be tough to findFinding domestic supplies for many of the imported car parts would be difficult. Even if an American parts supply could be found, in most cases it would be more expensive. Fewer imported cars would raise all pricesTariffs on imported vehicles likely would also lead to higher prices on cars that are assembled here, since it would limit the supply of vehicles in the US market.

A record 31 million passengers are expected to fly US airlines over the course of this week, according to Airlines for America, the industry trade group. And while many airlines have increased the available number of flights and seats, those capacity increases have not kept pace with demand. With some of the busiest months yet to come, a new record for the percentage of seats airlines’ filled is within reach. Airlines are signaling prices will probably go higher as some of the lower-fare airlines struggled with ongoing losses and sharply reduced their capacity. But critics of the airlines say troubles at the lower fare airlines aren’t solely to blame for higher fares.

New York CNN —This week ended with President-elect Donald Trump nominating one of the most pro-union Republican members of Congress to be his secretary of Labor. Trump support growing among unionsTrump received more support from rank-and-file union members in this election than he had in past elections. “Now he is threatening to take the unprecedented action of removing current pro-worker NLRB members in the middle of their term, replacing them with his corporate friends. Government crucial to Musk’s net worthIt’s worthwhile to ask just how much of his world-leading net worth comes from government help over the last 10 to 15 years. Tesla and SpaceX got started – and survived their early days – with assistance from state and federal policies, government contracts and loans. Tesla buyers received federal tax credits worth an estimated $3.4 billion before the perk disappeared entirely for Tesla buyers at the end of 2019. “Take away the subsidies, it will only help Tesla,” Musk posted on his social media platform X in July. According to USASpending.gov, the government database that tracks federal spending, SpaceX has signed contracts worth nearly $20 billion.

Spirit Airlines files for bankruptcy
  + stars: | 2024-11-18 | by ( Chris Isidore | Olesya Dmitracova | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York/London CNN —Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection Monday, as mounting losses, unaffordable debt, increased competition for bargain-seeking airline passengers and the inability to merge with other airlines left it little choice. Airlines and other companies in the United States frequently file for bankruptcy and emerge stronger on the other side of the process. Most major US airlines, including the three largest — American Airlines, United and Delta — have filed for bankruptcy at some point in the past 25 years. Numerous airlines, including American, have had their assets purchased out of bankruptcy and merged with a different airline. In recent years Spirit has attempted two mergers, one with fellow bargain carrier Frontier Airlines and once with JetBlue Airways, which topped the offer from Frontier only to have its purchase blocked by a federal judge on antitrust grounds.

Trump has said he wants to lower gas prices — which currently average $3.07 per gallon — to below $2 a gallon. But the American oil industry is already booming and increasing output doesn’t mean gas prices will drop. After oil prices shot up in 2022 in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions on Russian oil imposed by western countries, major oil companies reported record profits. But are we going to increase oil production by another 50%? OPEC+, a group of leading oil-producing countries, even delayed plans to increase production because of concerns about excess supply.

Americans paid a whopping $47,612 on average for a new car in October, according to data from Edmunds. That means new car prices have risen much faster than most goods and services. But much of the reason Americans are paying nearly $50k for a car is that automakers decided to go all-in on expensive cars. The combination of higher interest rates and higher car prices, along with the biggest average loans ever taken out to buy them, lifted the average monthly car payment to $742 in October. And that would make every car built in America more expensive, because no vehicle is made with 100% American parts.

Tesla, the world’s largest maker of EVs, is the only automaker making a profit on its US EV sales. So if the EV tax credit goes away, the price of all EVs might come down. ‘It will only help Tesla’Musk signaled during the campaign that he would support ending the EV tax credit, even if raised the cost of Tesla purchases for American buyers. But the rest of the auto industry wants to keep the tax credit in place. Disney gives investors years to cheer about

New York CNN —Disney did something extraordinary Thursday, giving investors a rare three-year financial outlook, even at a time of economic uncertainty. Shares of Disney (DIS) are exploding higher – up 10% just after the market open Thursday. And it forecast profits from streaming will rise another $875 million in the new fiscal year, helping to lift results. Legacy media companies such as Disney that have gotten into streaming in the last five years have struggled to make the business profitable as they sought to catch up with Netflix, which had been the only profitable streaming service until recently. Disney needs to have improved results from streaming as its cable and broadcast network business continues to suffer from a combination of ad sales declines an cord cutting by consumers.

A Wall Street Journal report Tuesday evening said a bankruptcy filing is expected to happen within weeks, as talks with Frontier Airlines to possibly buy Spirit (SAVE) broke down recently. Because of those discussions, the company said, Spirit is unable able to complete its third-quarter financial report by the prescribed time. While Spirit management tried to move ahead with the Frontier deal, its shareholders rejected the offer and Spirit ultimately agreed to the JetBlue deal instead. It argued such a combination would hurt airline passengers because it would reduce the number of inexpensive airline tickets — putting upward pressure on airfares overall. In January 2024 a federal judge agreed with DOJ’s argument and blocked the JetBlue deal.

But its more serious problems – ongoing massive losses, quality and safety problems – are as bad as ever, and could even get worse. Renewed problems in ChinaAmong the most serious problems Boeing faces is President-elect Donald Trump’s promise to impose large tariffs on imports from China. “There needs to be a full accounting for everything they do.”Need for new planesAnd there’s yet more mess Boeing needs to sort out. Ortberg told investors last month that Boeing needs to reduce its portfolio and repair its balance sheet so that Boeing has “a path to the next commercial aircraft.”The good news for Boeing is it is in little danger of going out of business, despite its many problems. And Airbus has a backlog of orders stretching back years, as does Boeing, so airline customers can not easily switch orders from one to the other.

Manufactured housing, sometimes called mobile homes, are homes made in a factory rather than constructed on site, and they have been surging in popularity this year amid America’s housing crisis. Instead, they’re turning to the internet for lower-cost options, whether a pop-up foldable house kit, a tiny home or a traditional mobile home. Amazon is not the first major retailer to sell manufactured homes. More than 100 years ago, American retailer Sears, Roebuck and Co began selling kit homes from its catalog, with some for under $1,000. A 2023 Urban Institute paper argued that mobile homes were “uniquely vulnerable” to natural disasters compared to other housing.

But the one person who has loomed over it all and has exerted a great deal of influence is Elon Musk, according to multiple sources. Trump put the call on speaker, and Zelensky thanked Musk for his help providing communications to Ukraine through the billionaire’s Starlink internet service. As of mid-October, Musk had donated nearly $119 million to a political action committee he set up to support Trump, according to Federal Election Commission filings. The day after the election, investors sent shares of Tesla up nearly 15%. That lifted the value of the 411 million shares that Musk owns outright by more than $15 billion and marked a two-year high for Tesla shares as a whole.

Boeing workers vote to accept deal, end strike
  + stars: | 2024-11-04 | by ( Chris Isidore | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
New York CNN —Striking workers at embattled plane maker Boeing voted Monday to accept the company’s most recent offer, ending the costliest strike in the United States in more than 25 years. The International Association of Machinists (IAM) said rank-and-file members voted by 59% to approve the deal. But the deal did not restore the traditional pension plan they lost in 2014 from their previous labor deal. But despite the deep financial problems, Boeing had little choice but to settle the strike and get the workers back on the job. Boeing’s economic impactDespite its problems, Boeing is still a major contributor to the US economy, as it is the largest American exporter.

New York CNN —More than 30,000 Boeing workers will vote again Monday on whether or not to end a crippling seven-week strike. The deal is not significantly different from an offer rejected by nearly two-thirds of membership just over a week ago. And it happened 10 years ago at Boeing, when about two-thirds of members rejected an offer that ended the pension plan. Despite its many problems, Boeing is a major force in America economy, and it is the largest American exporter. Ending the strike is important for Boeing’s new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, who started in the job just five weeks before the strike began.

Members of the International Association of Machinists just rejected Boeing’s offer to return to work after a bruising six weeks of strike action. But with 64% of IAM members voting no on the company’s latest offer, getting a once-great American company back on track appears harder than ever. Our members haven’t forgotten that.”Why traditional pension plans matterTraditional pensions are what’s known as defined benefit plans. Traditional pension plans are “one of the hallmarks of retirement security,” Holden said Wednesday night. But he said so far in negotiations Boeing hasn’t entertained any kind of return to a pension plan.

That is the Boeing unit that has been the most troubled, but the strike affected only the last two weeks of the three-month period. Boeing reported a $2.4 billion operating loss in its space and defense business, which is not affected by the strike. “First and foremost on everybody’s mind today is ending the IAM strike,” Ortberg told investors. Members of the International Association of Machinists from Boeing hold a march during an ongoing strike in Seattle, on October 15. Fortunately for Boeing, it is not likely it will be forced out of business by its current financial crisis.

Tesla reports improved earnings

New York CNN —Tesla Wednesday reported an unexpected improvement in earnings for the third quarter, lifting its recently battered shares in after-hours trading. But So the better profit came not from increasing sales but from success in cutting its cost to build vehicles. Tesla has been leading a price war in the electric vehicle sector, as a response to increased competition, especially from Chinese automakers. Investors had previously sold off Tesla shares (TSLA), disappointed by lack of details at a company event on plans for self-driving robotaxis. For the quarter Tesla earned $2.5 billion in the quarter, or 72 cents a share, up 8% from a year ago.

New York CNN —The strike by 33,000 workers at Boeing will continue after rank-and-file union members rejected an offer from the company in a vote on Wednesday and decided to remain on the picket lines instead. The membership of the International Association of Machinists voted 64% against the deal, the union announced late Wednesday. “Our members deserve more,” said Jon Holden, the president of the largest IAM local at Boeing and its chief negotiator. The offer would have raised wages for IAM members at Boeing by 35 percentage points over the four-year life of the contract, with an immediate 12% raise. Loss of pension a ‘sticking point’Among the major issues for many members was the loss of a traditional pension plan.

That means GM is selling cars at higher average prices this year than it was in 2023. During the strike, the UAW’s slogan on the picket lines was that record profits should result in a record contract. Its new guidance suggests that the full-year earnings will now top the record profit of 2022. The strong results and guidance sent shares of GM (GM) up 2% in premarket trading. GM CFO Paul Jacobson on Monday told reporters that GM cut costs ahead of the strike in anticipation of pay raises for its unionized workers.

Tentative deal announced to end Boeing strike
  + stars: | 2024-10-19 | by ( Chris Isidore | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
New York CNN —A tentative deal has been reached to end the five-week-long strike at troubled aircraft maker Boeing, the union announced to its 33,000 striking members early Saturday. Rank-and-file already nearly unanimously rejected a previous tentative agreement, precipitating the first strike at the company in 16 years. Many union members had expressed anger over the loss of the pensions. The union credited Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su with brokering the deal in indirect talks between the union and management. A week after that deal was rejected, Boeing improved its offer to 30% in wage increases over the four-year deal, terming that its best and final offer.
