It's a "no-brainer" for "anyone in their 20s," says Eustache Clerveaux, a certified financial planner and senior analyst at Hudson Financial Group. This includes Roth 401(k)s. But for younger workers who don't have access to a workplace plan, a Roth IRA can be a great way to start building wealth. Like a 401(k), Roth IRA contributions benefit from compound interest, where your money and its returns grow together over time. Younger investors are less likely to hit Roth IRA income limitsOne key reason to start investing in your 20s is that you're more likely to qualify for a Roth IRA. This makes it an ideal time to pay taxes upfront on Roth IRA contributions.

Most Americans are concerned about what may happen to Social Security when its retirement trust fund crosses a projected 2033 depletion date, according to a new Bankrate survey. Nearly three-quarters, 73%, of non-retired adults and 71% retired adults say they worry they won’t receive their benefits if the trust fund runs out. Social Security’s actuaries project the fund the program relies on to pay retirement benefits will be depleted in 2033. Retirees can claim Social Security retirement benefits as early as age 62, though they take a permanent lifetime reduction. Social Security is “inflation indexed longevity insurance,” said CFP David Haas, owner of Cereus Financial Advisors in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey.

Many employees have a health savings account, which offers tax incentives to save for medical expenses. However, most are still missing out on long-term HSA benefits, experts say. But you need an eligible high-deductible health plan to make contributions. Some 66% of employees picked an HSA-qualifying health plan when given the choice, according to the Plan Sponsor Council of America survey. However, the best health insurance plan depends on your family's expected medical expenses for the upcoming year, experts say.

Get the most out of these tax-favored accounts in 2025

Benefits enrollment season is here, and with it comes an opportunity for workers to tune up their workplace savings plans and sock away more money on a tax-favored basis. Traditional tax-deferred accounts, like 401(k) plans and individual retirement accounts, are just the beginning for savers. As tempting as it may be for savers to plow money into HSAs and other tax-favored accounts, they'll need to draw up a strategy before they do so. They can also earmark additional funds toward 529 college savings plans and taxable brokerage accounts. In a tax-deferred account, investors won't be on the hook for the tax bill until they begin drawing down from it.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with House Republicans at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 13, 2024. Congressional lawmakers will soon debate expiring tax breaks and new promises from President-elect Donald Trump. With a majority in the House of Representatives and Senate, Republican lawmakers can pass sweeping tax legislation through "reconciliation," which bypasses the Senate filibuster. But choosing priorities could be difficult, particularly amid the federal budget deficit, policy experts said Tuesday at a Brookings Institution event in Washington. Legislators will be "representing their districts, not their party," Howard Gleckman, a senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, said Tuesday in a panel discussion at the Brookings event.

Leah Millis | ReutersNow that Donald Trump has been elected president, many individual investors are wondering what that means for their money. Yet, when it comes to long-term performance of the markets and policies that Trump proposed on the campaign trail, financial advisors say it's best to take a wait-and-see approach before making any big money decisions. Lee Baker, a CFP and owner of Claris Financial Advisors in Atlanta, said he's also told clients not to make wholesale financial changes now. Many investors expect Trump to lead with faster economic growth and more market-friendly policies, said Francis during a Friday webcast on what Trump's presidency could mean for investors' money. While those policies would put more money in Americans' pockets, Francis noted, other experts say it's too soon to count on those changes.

Here are four red flags to look for when choosing a financial professional, plus one green flag that an advisor could be a good fit, according to certified financial planners and advisors from across the U.S.Red flag No. 1: The financial advisor does most of the talkingIf a potential financial planner is doing most of the talking without letting you get a word in edgewise, it's a bad sign. Financial advisors who are also registered as investment advisors will have a public disclosure record with the SEC as well. In addition, you will also want to make sure that your financial advisor is certified in the way they claim. 4: You don't trust themOne red flag can't be found on a list or spreadsheet: lack of trust.

Yet, Wall Street's reaction to the election outcome does not reflect how many Americans feel about the state of their personal finances, some financial experts say. Long-term capital gains rates apply to assets owned for more than one year. Higher capital gains tax rates, however, are "entirely off the table," under a Trump presidency and Republican-controlled Congress, said Erica York, senior economist and research manager with the Tax Foundation's Center for Federal Tax Policy. Even with partial Republican control, "it's most likely that capital gains tax policy just stays put where it is," York explained. For 2024, investors pay long-term capital gains rates of 0%, 15% or 20%, depending on taxable income. Combined with long-term capital gains taxes, higher earners currently pay up to 23.8% on investments.
