Read previewEarlier this month, a spokesperson for Turkey's ruling AK Party said that a process was "underway" for Turkey to join the BRICS group of emerging-market nations. He now appears to be seeking to maintain what experts have dubbed a "balancing act" between its relations with the West, Russia, and China. "Even if Turkey does join BRICS, I do not believe it is going to lead to a fundamental redefinition of Turkey's relationship with the West." Advertisement"Understanding and collaborating with Turkey's perspective can enhance US and NATO relations with Turkey, irrespective of potential administrative changes in Ankara," Can wrote in an article for the Wilson Center. For its part, the US has remained relatively quiet following the news that Turkey's BRICS ambitions may be inching forward, which Aydintaşbaş said was likely a savvy move aimed at avoiding a public dispute.

Both lay entangled in the Turkish net, sandwiched between a view of reality in front of them and the sound of insanity from Portugal’s fans behind them. So keen must Ronaldo have been to actually watch a Portugal goal being scored, he squared to Fernandes when in on goal for the third. Another, a fully-grown man, almost grappled the Portugal striker with his arm tightly around his neck, which Ronaldo then removed. But here, in the shape of Portugal’s Ronaldo, there was a focal point to their anger, as well as their support.

Watching ‘Barbie’ and Thinking About Death
  + stars: | 2023-09-08 | by ( Amanda Taub | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I really expected to love “Barbie.” As someone with proudly lowbrow taste in movies, I normally adore a big summer popcorn blockbuster, and every millennial woman I knew seemed to consider it a pop-nostalgia masterpiece. Instead, I left unsettled and frustrated: Something about the story seemed profoundly wrong to me, but I couldn’t articulate what it was. The play is set in a fictional totalitarian regime in which plays and literature are subject to strict censorship. That’s not because the government doesn’t respect the theater, a high-ranking censor named Mr. Celik explains to Adem, a young would-be playwright. Rather, it’s because it knows the power of stories to shape how people see the world, and to help them imagine how to change it.

Sputnik/Vyacheslav Prokofyev/Pool via REUTERS Acquire Licensing RightsISTANBUL, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan will visit Russia soon to discuss the collapsed United Nations deal that had allowed Black Sea exports of Ukrainian grain, a spokesperson for Turkey's ruling AK Party said on Monday. Ankara is seeking to persuade Russia to return to the agreement, under which Odesa's seaports shipped tens of millions of tons of grain. Omer Celik, the AK Party spokesperson, said Erdogan would visit Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi "soon" but did not specify whether he would meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. "After this visit there may be developments and new stages may be reached regarding" the grain deal, he told reporters.

His delicate balancing act has given Turkey a unique position of being the only NATO nation whose ear Russia has. “By backing Sweden’s NATO bid…Ankara is signaling a recalibration in ties with the West, which have been strained for a while now,” said Memet Celik, editorial coordinator for the pro-government Daily Sabah newspaper. “In a larger sense, Russia’s unjustified war against Ukraine reminded the West of the importance of geography, hard military power, and alliance commitments – and thus the value of Turkey,” he said. Turkey, however, is likely to continue to be relevant to both Russia and the West. “Due to proximity, power, and relations with both Kyiv and Moscow, Turkey will be a key player in conflict resolution and whatever peace deal ultimately emerges,” said Outzen.

With pressure on the construction industry to decarbonize, researchers around the world are looking for ways to make concrete greener. CarbonCure injects captured CO2 into concrete as it’s mixed, where it reacts with cement to increase the strength of the concrete. As well as sequestering CO2, the company says this extra strength means the concrete can be made with less cement. From salt water to cementIn the United Arab Emirates (UAE), researchers are working on a process to cut concrete’s carbon footprint while tackling another environmental problem. “The construction industry is one of the oldest industries and we might have some resistance to change the material that (it is) currently using.

The cabinet appointments hint at a return to orthodox economic policy while holding course on foreign policy as the president heads into his third decade in power. Erdogan’s unorthodox economic policies over the past few years have led to a cost-of-living crisis and a plummeting Turkish lira. Shadow diplomatThe new foreign minister is a well-known figure to Turks and international players who have negotiated with Turkey of late. Hakan Fidan, who had served as head of Turkish Intelligence Agency (MIT) since 2010, has been in every room and every discussion that has been pivotal to Turkish foreign policy over the last few years. He’s been ever-present but rarely heard – a shadow diplomat in Erdogan’s foreign policy arsenal who has charted rough waters in Syria, Libya and beyond.

Pioli, whose Milan team were dethroned by Napoli in the league, also have a Champions League semi-final, first leg against Inter on Wednesday to think about. Mourinho wears wire on touchline in Roma draw

Mourinho, who is no stranger to clashes with referees, tore into Daniele Chiffi after the game, describing the 38-year-old official as "the worst I've ever encountered." From the moment I left the locker room, to the moment I returned. Their latest draw left Roma seventh, just outside the European places with five games left to play, and Mourinho was especially incensed that Chiffi sent off Mehmet Celik after showing him a second yellow card in added time. "He is the worst referee I have met in my life," Mourinho said. "A second yellow to a guy who slips in the 96th minute...
Separately, in a televised interview on Wednesday, Erdogan downplayed the significance of the meeting with Simsek, saying such meetings were ordinary. A senior government official told Reuters the AKP was somewhat divided with some members opposed to Simsek's return, and described the outcome of the Erdogan meeting as "undesirable". The party may now need to revise its economic platform ahead of the election campaign, he added. The AKP declined to comment on whether it was revising its economic strategy ahead of the vote. Two recent polls by MAK and Turkiye Raporu show the opposition presidential challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu between 4 and 9 percentage points ahead of Erdogan.
Turkey's AK Party mulls bringing elections 'slightly' forward
  + stars: | 2023-01-02 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
ANKARA, Jan 2 (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's ruling AK Party is considering a "slight change" on the date of elections scheduled for mid-June, a senior party official said on Monday. "We want elections to be held on June 18," AK Party spokesperson Omer Celik said at a news conference when asked about the possibility of snap elections. "But since this date corresponds with summer holiday season when people are travelling, ware evaluating bringing the date slightly forward." Turkey's parliamentary and presidential elections are scheduled to be held on June 18, and Erdogan previously said elections would be held in June. "This change of date will not amount to snap elections...
Union for Bread Producers Chairman Cihan Kolivar made the comments to broadcaster Haberturk on Monday as he spoke about the rising price of bread and Turkey's soaring inflation. "Bread is the staple food for stupid societies. I speak scientifically, I am not making it up - per capita consumption is 210 kilos in Turkey; and 45-50 kilos in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, England, Japan," Kolivar said. Critics blame Turkey's economic ills on Erdogan's unorthodox monetary policies, which he says are aimed at boosting exports, investment and jobs. "In addition to insulting our nation and bread, this person's statements show that he is an element of the politics of hostility, the politics of hatred," Celik said.
