Opinion | No Grandchildren in Their Lives

To the Editor:Re “Sunset Years in Silent Houses: The Despair of No Grandchildren” (front page, Nov. 12):I appreciated Catherine Pearson’s reporting on people’s feelings about not becoming grandparents, but I have an important contrasting perspective. I am a 68-year-old woman whose two children plan not to have children. As a geologist, I know that climate change is real, human-caused and accelerating. As an animal lover, I can’t look at a squirrel, bird or butterfly without knowing that all species, including ours, carry forever chemicals and nanoplastics in their bodies. Rather than helping to raise grandchildren, I am spending my time volunteering in efforts to keep the planet habitable for future generations — other elders’ future generations.

“It’s many, many things under one umbrella.”Although people diagnosed with autism often have similar strengths and challenges, “there are many paths to autism and many presentations of autism,” Miller said. Scientists have identified more than 100 genes related to autism, Miller said, and genes are believed to play a role in 60% to 80% of cases. “We’re making leaps and bounds about known genetic causes of autism.”Yet genes clearly don’t explain every case of autism. But only a fraction of children with the genetic mutation actually develop autism, Miller said. He notes that only 8.4% of the $419 million spent on autism research in the United States is devoted to support and services for people with autism.

According to NBC News exit polls of Nevada, Trump lost Latinos by 26 percentage points in 2020, but he won them by 2 points this year. Among Nevada voters without college degrees, Trump extended his lead from 2 points in 2020 to 10 points this year. “Working-class voters don’t pay attention to politics. Russia’s possible use of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) is a message to the West that it is has greater capabilities than previously displayed after a week of significant military operations and policy changes in both Ukraine and Russia. The West has for some time been concerned at a reciprocal Russian escalation in the war. This week, both US and British-French-made missiles have been fired into Russia by Ukraine, after US President Joe Biden gave Kyiv permission to use longer-range American missiles. In turn, President Vladimir Putin updated Russia’s nuclear doctrine — in a nuanced way, but still refined their policy to lower the threshold for use. Such an event would have elicited a very different reaction in Kyiv and the West.

WASHINGTON — The Senate voted overwhelmingly Wednesday night to reject three efforts led by progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders that would have blocked certain offensive weapons sales to Israel. In a speech on the Senate floor ahead of the vote, Sanders argued that the resolutions "would not affect any of the systems Israel uses to defend itself from incoming attacks," focusing instead on offensive weapons. "As I have said many, many times: Israel had the absolute right to respond to that horrific Hamas attack, as any other country would. I don’t think anybody here in the United States Senate disagrees with that," he said in his floor speech. More than 43,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s offensive into the dense enclave since the attack, according to health officials in Gaza.

CNN —Ukraine’s military has accused Russia of firing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) into its territory for the first time, marking what would be another significant escalation in the 1,000-day-old war. Despite Kyiv’s accusation, two Western officials said that the missile launched by Russia was a ballistic missile, but not an ICBM. Ukraine’s air force accused Russia of launching an intercontinental ballistic missile at Dnipro at around 5 a.m. local time, from the Astrakhan region of southern Russia. If confirmed by the Senate, three key nominees would largely be responsible for executing Trump's "drill, baby, drill" agenda across the federal government. The Interior Department leases millions of acres of public lands and waters for oil and gas drilling. The oil and gas industry is pushing the Trump administration to issue a new five-year offshore-leasing program. Woods of ExxonMobil told Semafor last week that the Trump administration should keep regulations to curb methane emissions from oil and gas infrastructure. But Trump attacked electric vehicles on the campaign trail, adopting the oil and gas lobby's messaging.

AdvertisementNepo babies can have access to the hottest designers and archival pieces. BI spoke with fashion stylists to learn which of today's nepo babies have the best style. Lori Harvey was complimented for her ability to marry grunge and feminine elements in her looks. "But when you have rich, famous people's closets to raid, you're going to have better options than if not," fashion stylist Payton Dale told Business Insider. Though the lines of who counts as a nepo baby remain up for debate — nepo babies, short for nepotism babies, are usually thought of as successful individuals who benefit from their parents' or other relative's success in the same or similar industries — BI reached out to Dale, as well as fashion stylists Maiya Simone and Turner Allen, to learn which nepo babies have the best style.

Trump has said he plans to bring down gas prices by boosting US oil production. AdvertisementDuring the presidential campaign, Trump said that he planned to lower energy prices — including the cost of gas — by increasing US oil production. Cahill added that he expects the US to increase oil production, but it will happen gradually. However, he said boosting oil production while keeping prices at a desired level is a "delicate balance" for the industry. "If oil prices drop, you're likely to see a natural decline in US oil production over the long run," he said, adding, "Oil companies have shareholders to be accountable to."
