Opinion | Pope Francis Tries to Settle Accounts

In each case you have an act of discipline seemingly tailored to the way that the rebellions are manifesting themselves. Among conservatives and traditionalists, specific critiques of the pope himself from prominent bishops and cardinals have now met with specific personal punishments. Among liberals and progressives, a broad attempt to liberalize the church’s moral teachings has now met with a general doctrinal rebuke. Both sides will note, for instance, that criticizing the pope earns you a sacking, but seeming doctrinal disobedience merits only a sternly worded letter. It’s a mistake to pin too much blame on this pope alone, however.

REUTERS/Remo Casilli/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsVATICAN CITY, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Pope Francis has removed some of the Vatican privileges of conservative American Cardinal Raymond Burke, including a large subsidized apartment and his salary, a senior Vatican official said on Tuesday. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, participated in a regular Vatican meeting when the pope made the announcement to senior aides last week. Burke has had no senior Vatican job for years. On Nov. 11, the pope dismissed another conservative critic, Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas, after Strickland refused to step down following a Vatican investigation. Most recently, in October, Burke was one of five cardinals who openly challenged a global month-long Vatican meeting, known as a synod.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Oakland Athletics’ move to Las Vegas was unanimously approved Thursday by Major League Baseball team owners, cementing the sport’s first relocation since 2005, according to two people familiar with the vote. Las Vegas will become the fourth city for a franchise that played in Philadelphia from 1901-54, moved to Kansas City for 13 seasons and arrived in Oakland for 1968. The new stadium will be the team’s fifth after Columbia Park (1901-08), Shibe Park (1909-54), Memorial Stadium (1955-67) and the Coliseum. The team announced April 19 it had purchased land in Las Vegas, then a month later replaced that location with a deal with Bally’s and Gaming & Leisure Properties to build a stadium on the Tropicana hotel site along the Las Vegas Strip. While San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose is the 10th-largest television market in the U.S., Las Vegas is the 40th.

___The generational shift at quarterback in the NFL reached a new milestone last week. This was the first time since Week 6 of the 2002 season that no quarterback born in the 1980s took the field. That raised the total of rookie starting QBs this season to nine, tying the non-replacement record set in 2019. The youth movement at quarterback has played a role in the struggles on offense across the league in the first half of the season, with scoring at its lowest mark through nine weeks since 2007. For both the 30-year-old García and the Texas Rangers. García has helped the Rangers reached the Fall Classic for the first time since 2011 with his big bat and passionate approach. García angrily went face-to-face with catcher Martín Maldonado as benches and bullpens cleared before the Astros came back to win. “He’s someone who knows me, knows my abilities, knows what I can do,” García said of Arozarena. García went to spring training as a non-roster invite and hit .375 with three homers, 13 RBIs and four stolen bases in 22 games.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Before opening the World Series, the Arizona Diamondbacks wanted to recount a series of slights. Overlooked by oddsmakers and angered by analysts, the Diamondbacks find themselves in a Surprise Series against the also unexpected Texas Rangers. Texas starts Nathan Eovaldi, a 33-year-old right-hander and a two-time All-Star who has overcome two Tommy John surgeries. “We weren’t concerned with what people thought of us,” said first-year Rangers manager Bruce Bochy who led San Francisco to three titles from 2010-14. The Diamondbacks have allowed three unearned runs during the postseason and the Rangers one.

October 25 - PHILADELPHIA -- The Arizona Diamondbacks won nine games during a six-week span from early July through mid-August. On Tuesday night, the Diamondbacks won their ninth game of October -- and became one of the most unlikely World Series teams of all-time. The Diamondbacks, who overcame two-games-to-none and three-games-to-two deficits in the NLCS, will visit the American League champion Texas Rangers in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday night. The Phillies, with five players on $100 million deals on their roster, fell one win shy of their second straight NL pennant. The Phillies scored 15 runs in the final five games.

When Helena Jeppesen-Spuhler, an advocate for the ordination of women, joined a major Vatican meeting this month, she was skeptical that an institution dominated by men for 2,000 years was ready to listen to women like her. The gathering of some 300 bishops from around the world also included for the first time 70 lay people, women among them, who have voting rights. As the confidential meeting approaches its end on Oct. 29, Ms. Jeppesen-Spuhler said she has been pleasantly surprised. Some clerics — priests, bishops and cardinals — openly supported the advancement of women, she said. There had been “really good discussions,” Ms. Jeppesen-Spuhler said, adding, “It hasn’t been the women against the bishops and cardinals.

HOUSTON—Twelve years after one of the most devastating losses in baseball history, the heartbreak of the 2011 World Series still looms over the Texas Rangers. On two separate occasions in Game 6—in the ninth inning and then again in the 10th—the Rangers needed just one more strike to claim a championship over the St. Louis Cardinals. Both times, they blew the lead, punctuated by David Freese’s legendary walk-off home run that destroyed a generation of Rangers fans. “For a couple of years after that I would probably have a moment every day where I would think about it,” said Michael Young, the Rangers’ all-time hits leader and a key member of that 2011 squad. “If that ball goes off the end of his bat instead of smack dab on the barrel, this whole thing is different.”
