LONDON — Apple and Google could face a competition investigation into their dominance of mobile web browsers and apps in the U.K. The U.K.'s Competition and Markets Authority issued a report Friday with a provisional decision from an independent inquiry group tasked by the regulator with carrying out an in-depth review of the mobile browser markets. In the report, the group recommended that the CMA investigates Apple and Google's activities in mobile ecosystems under the new Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act (DMCC), a new U.K. law coming into force next year which seeks to prevent anti-competitive behavior in digital markets. The DMCC is akin to the Digital Markets Act in the European Union. The group also said it found a revenue-sharing agreement between Google and Apple to make Google the default search engine on iPhone "significantly reduces their financial incentives to compete in mobile browsers on iOS."

Igor Golovniov | Sopa Images | Lightrocket via Getty ImagesLONDON — Britain's competition regulator is preparing remedies aimed at solving competition issues in the multibillion-pound cloud computing industry. The sources, who preferred to remain anonymous given the investigation's sensitive nature, said that the cloud market remedies could be announced within the next two weeks. Amazon is the largest player in the market, offering cloud services via its Amazon Web Services (AWS) arm. Ofcom subsequently referred its cloud review to the CMA to address competition issues in the market. She is expected to outline plans for a review in 2025 into whether the CMA should more frequently use behavioral remedies when approving deals, the FT reported.

LONDON British telecom firms Vodafone and Three's multibillion-pound merger could go ahead if the companies adopt a series of proposed remedies to clear competition concerns, regulators said Tuesday. Vodafone has previously said that the combined entity, once merged, would invest £11 billion ($14.46 billion) into U.K. telecommunications infrastructure. Vodafone has also said it disagrees with earlier findings from the CMA that the merger would lead to price increases for consumers. It says the merger wouldn't pricing strategy and would enhance competition between mobile virtual network operators, or MVNOs. "Approval would mark one of the most significant developments in the history of UK mobile, heralding the arrival of a new market leader with over 29 million customers," Manning said in emailed comments.

In this article VOD-GB Follow your favorite stocks CREATE FREE ACCOUNTwatch nowBritain's competition watchdog on Friday said it found competition concerns with the proposed merger between Vodafone and the Three UK mobile network owned by CK Hutchison. The U.K. Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said the deal would lead to price increases for tens of millions of customers or see some users get reduced services. The regulator also warned of a negative impact for so-called Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), which piggyback on existing infrastructure. The regulator said Friday the merger would result in higher prices or reduced services, and could "negatively affect those customers least able to afford mobile services." Vodafone said in a separate statement Friday that it disagrees with the findings that the merger would lead to price increases for consumers.

"I've always said The Trade Desk managed to win in an unfair market — imagine what we could do in a fair market." Since its founding in 2009, The Trade Desk — which operates a demand-side platform for advertisers and ad agencies — has grown into an adtech juggernaut. Having debuted on the Nasdaq in 2016, the California-based adtech company now has a market capitalization of almost $50 billion. In it, Google named-checked The Trade Desk as one of those alternative players in the ad market. However, experts say there is more to Beyoncé’s snub than the industry’s longtime erasure of Black artists’ contributions to country music. In contrast, rapper Post Malone made his first foray into country music this year and opted for a more mainstream country music sound, tapping Nashville giants to assist in his project. As one of the largest pop stars in the world, her career is not dependent on Nashville or the Country Music Association, which runs the CMA Awards. Neither Beyoncé nor the Country Music Association responded to a request for comment on the matter. The CMA Awards snub has opened up a dialogue about where the country music industry can go from here.

The DOJ and the states are seeking a breakup of Google's adtech business. Separately, they said that while a separation of Google's ad server and its ad exchange would be good for competition in the adtech market, it might drive ad server costs up for publishers. Google's ad server is "a loss leader, they make all their money in AdX," the exec said, referring to Google's ad exchange that connects buyers and sellers. LONDON — Britain's competition watchdog on Friday issued a statement of objections over Google's ad tech practices, which the regulator provisionally found are impacting competition in the U.K. In a statement, the Competition and Markets Authority alleged that the U.S. internet search titan "has harmed competition by using its dominance in online display advertising to favour its own ad tech services." The CMA further noted that Google disadvantages ad technology competitors, preventing them from competing on a "level playing field." "Many businesses are able to keep their digital content free or cheaper by using online advertising to generate revenue. The core of this case rests on flawed interpretations of the ad tech sector."

London CNN —Britain’s competition watchdog is investigating Ticketmaster over concerns the company treated customers unfairly when selling tickets to the upcoming Oasis reunion tour. The authority will also consider whether people were pressured to buy tickets quickly at a higher price than they understood they would have to pay. One individual posted on X that he had waited five hours to buy tickets only to receive a message that read: “Your session has been suspended.”Fans should be “treated fairly” when buying tickets, CMA CEO Sarah Cardell said in Thursday’s statement. Ticketmaster faced public scrutiny in November 2022 for its handling of the massively popular Taylor Swift Eras Tour. It was also caught in controversy after a blunder relating to sales of tickets for a concert to celebrate the ascension of King Charles to the British throne.

Early industry testing of the Privacy Sandbox tools designed to emulate online targeting produced fairly dire results. Google won't escape regulatory scrutinyIt's unclear whether keeping cookies would allow Google to shake off regulators' grasp of its Privacy Sandbox. In 2022, Google pledged to give the UK's Competition and Markets Authority oversight of its Privacy Sandbox rollout and Chrome cookie removal. A key question now is whether Google's commitments to the CMA need to change now that third-party cookies remain in the mix. And there isn't a clear answer about the future governance of the Privacy Sandbox, to ensure Google doesn't preference its own ad products.
